The Golden Calf
32 When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered around Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make gods for us, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” 2 Aaron said to them, “Take off the gold rings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off the gold rings from their ears, and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took the gold from them, formed it in a mold,[a] and cast an image of a calf; and they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” 5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a festival to the Lord.” 6 They rose early the next day, and offered burnt offerings and brought sacrifices of well-being; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel.
7 The Lord said to Moses, “Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; 8 they have been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them; they have cast for themselves an image of a calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’” 9 The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are. 10 Now let me alone, so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them; and of you I will make a great nation.”
11 But Moses implored the Lord his God, and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce wrath; change your mind and do not bring disaster on your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you swore to them by your own self, saying to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’” 14 And the Lord changed his mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his people.
15 Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain, carrying the two tablets of the covenant[b] in his hands, tablets that were written on both sides, written on the front and on the back. 16 The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved upon the tablets. 17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.” 18 But he said,
“It is not the sound made by victors,
or the sound made by losers;
it is the sound of revelers that I hear.”
19 As soon as he came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses’ anger burned hot, and he threw the tablets from his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. 20 He took the calf that they had made, burned it with fire, ground it to powder, scattered it on the water, and made the Israelites drink it.
21 Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you that you have brought so great a sin upon them?” 22 And Aaron said, “Do not let the anger of my lord burn hot; you know the people, that they are bent on evil. 23 They said to me, ‘Make us gods, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 24 So I said to them, ‘Whoever has gold, take it off’; so they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!”
25 When Moses saw that the people were running wild (for Aaron had let them run wild, to the derision of their enemies), 26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, “Who is on the Lord’s side? Come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered around him. 27 He said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Put your sword on your side, each of you! Go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill your brother, your friend, and your neighbor.’” 28 The sons of Levi did as Moses commanded, and about three thousand of the people fell on that day. 29 Moses said, “Today you have ordained yourselves[c] for the service of the Lord, each one at the cost of a son or a brother, and so have brought a blessing on yourselves this day.”
30 On the next day Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. But now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” 31 So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Alas, this people has sinned a great sin; they have made for themselves gods of gold. 32 But now, if you will only forgive their sin—but if not, blot me out of the book that you have written.” 33 But the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book. 34 But now go, lead the people to the place about which I have spoken to you; see, my angel shall go in front of you. Nevertheless, when the day comes for punishment, I will punish them for their sin.”
35 Then the Lord sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf—the one that Aaron made.

32 (A)Il popolo vide che Mosè tardava a scendere dal monte; allora si radunò intorno ad Aaronne e gli disse: «Facci un dio che vada davanti a noi[a]; poiché quel Mosè, l’uomo che ci ha fatti uscire dal paese d’Egitto, non sappiamo che fine abbia fatto». 2 E Aaronne rispose loro: «Staccate gli anelli d’oro che sono agli orecchi delle vostre mogli, dei vostri figli e delle vostre figlie, e portatemeli». 3 E tutto il popolo si staccò dagli orecchi gli anelli d’oro e li portò ad Aaronne. 4 Egli li prese dalle loro mani e, dopo aver cesellato lo stampo, ne fece un vitello di metallo fuso. E quelli dissero: «O Israele, questo è il tuo dio che ti ha fatto uscire dal paese d’Egitto!» 5 Quando Aaronne vide questo, costruì un altare davanti al vitello ed esclamò: «Domani sarà festa in onore del Signore!» 6 L’indomani, si alzarono di buon’ora, offrirono olocausti e portarono dei sacrifici di ringraziamento; il popolo sedette per mangiare e bere, poi si alzò per divertirsi[b].
7 (B)Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Va’, scendi; perché il tuo popolo che hai fatto uscire dal paese d’Egitto, si è corrotto; 8 si sono presto sviati dalla strada che io avevo loro ordinato di seguire; si son fatti un vitello di metallo fuso, l’hanno adorato, gli hanno offerto sacrifici e hanno detto: “O Israele, questo è il tuo dio che ti ha fatto uscire dal paese d’Egitto”». 9 Il Signore disse ancora a Mosè: «Ho considerato bene questo popolo; ecco, è un popolo dal collo duro. 10 Dunque, lascia che la mia ira s’infiammi contro di loro e che io li consumi, ma di te io farò una grande nazione».
11 Allora Mosè supplicò il Signore, il suo Dio, e disse: «Perché, o Signore, la tua ira s’infiammerebbe contro il tuo popolo che hai fatto uscire dal paese d’Egitto con grande potenza e con mano forte? 12 Perché gli Egiziani direbbero: “Egli li ha fatti uscire per far loro del male, per ucciderli tra le montagne e per sterminarli dalla faccia della terra!”? Calma l’ardore della tua ira e pèntiti del male di cui minacci il tuo popolo. 13 Ricòrdati di Abraamo, d’Isacco e d’Israele, tuoi servi, ai quali giurasti per te stesso, dicendo loro: “Io moltiplicherò la vostra discendenza come le stelle del cielo; darò alla vostra discendenza tutto questo paese di cui vi ho parlato ed essa lo possederà per sempre”».
14 E il Signore si pentì del male che aveva detto di fare al suo popolo.
15 (C)Allora Mosè si voltò e scese dal monte con le due tavole della testimonianza nelle mani: tavole scritte da una parte e dall’altra. 16 Le tavole erano opera di Dio e la scrittura era scrittura di Dio incisa sulle tavole. 17 Or Giosuè, udendo il clamore del popolo che gridava, disse a Mosè: «Si ode un fragore di battaglia nell’accampamento». 18 Mosè rispose: «Questo non è grido di vittoria, né grido di vinti; il clamore che io odo è di gente che canta». 19 Quando fu vicino all’accampamento, vide il vitello e le danze; e l’ira di Mosè s’infiammò ed egli gettò dalle mani le tavole e le spezzò ai piedi del monte. 20 Poi prese il vitello che quelli avevano fatto, lo bruciò col fuoco, lo ridusse in polvere, sparse la polvere sull’acqua e la fece bere ai figli d’Israele.
21 Mosè disse ad Aaronne: «Che ti ha fatto questo popolo, che gli hai attirato addosso un così grande peccato?» 22 Aaronne rispose: «L’ira del mio signore non s’infiammi; tu conosci questo popolo e sai che è incline al male. 23 Essi mi hanno detto: “Facci un dio che vada davanti a noi; poiché quel Mosè, l’uomo che ci ha fatti uscire dal paese d’Egitto, non sappiamo che fine abbia fatto”. 24 Io ho detto loro: “Chi ha dell’oro se lo levi di dosso!” Essi me l’hanno dato; io l’ho buttato nel fuoco e ne è venuto fuori questo vitello».
25 (D)Quando Mosè vide che il popolo era senza freno e che Aaronne lo aveva lasciato sfrenarsi esponendolo all’obbrobrio dei suoi nemici, 26 si fermò all’ingresso dell’accampamento, e disse: «Chiunque è per il Signore, venga a me!» E tutti i figli di Levi si radunarono presso di lui. 27 Ed egli disse loro: «Così dice il Signore, il Dio d’Israele: “Ognuno di voi si metta la spada al fianco; percorrete l’accampamento da una porta all’altra di esso, e ciascuno uccida il fratello, ciascuno l’amico, ciascuno il vicino!”» 28 I figli di Levi eseguirono l’ordine di Mosè, e in quel giorno caddero circa tremila uomini. 29 Poi Mosè disse: «Consacratevi oggi al Signore, ciascuno a prezzo del proprio figlio e del proprio fratello, e il Signore vi conceda oggi una benedizione».
30 (E)L’indomani Mosè disse al popolo: «Voi avete commesso un grande peccato; ma ora io salirò dal Signore; forse otterrò che il vostro peccato vi sia perdonato». 31 Mosè dunque tornò al Signore e disse: «Ahimè, questo popolo ha commesso un grande peccato e si è fatto un dio d’oro; 32 nondimeno, perdona ora il loro peccato! Se no, ti prego, cancellami dal tuo libro che hai scritto!» 33 Il Signore rispose a Mosè: «Colui che ha peccato contro di me, quello cancellerò dal mio libro! 34 Ora va’, conduci il popolo dove ti ho detto. Ecco, il mio angelo andrà davanti a te; ma nel giorno che verrò a punire, io li punirò del loro peccato».
35 E il Signore colpì il popolo, perché esso era l’autore del vitello che Aaronne aveva fatto.

Das Volk macht sich ein goldenes Kalb
32 Als aber das Volk sah, dass Mose lange nicht von dem Berg herabkam, da sammelte sich das Volk um Aaron und sprach zu ihm: Auf, mache uns Götter,[a] die uns vorangehen sollen! Denn wir wissen nicht, was mit diesem Mann Mose geschehen ist, der uns aus dem Land Ägypten heraufgeführt hat.
2 Da sprach Aaron zu ihnen: Reißt die goldenen Ohrringe ab, die an den Ohren eurer Frauen, eurer Söhne und eurer Töchter sind, und bringt sie zu mir!
3 Da riss sich das ganze Volk die goldenen Ohrringe ab, die an ihren Ohren waren, und sie brachten sie zu Aaron.
4 Und er nahm es aus ihrer Hand entgegen und bildete es mit dem Meißel und machte ein gegossenes Kalb. Da sprachen sie: Das sind eure Götter, Israel, die dich aus dem Land Ägypten heraufgeführt haben!
5 Als Aaron das sah, baute er einen Altar vor ihm und ließ ausrufen und sprach: Morgen ist ein Fest für den Herrn!
6 Da standen sie am Morgen früh auf und opferten Brandopfer und brachten dazu Friedensopfer[b]; und das Volk setzte sich nieder, um zu essen und zu trinken, und sie standen auf, um sich zu belustigen.
Gottes Zorn und Moses Fürbitte
7 Da sprach der Herr zu Mose: Geh, steige hinab; denn dein Volk, das du aus dem Land Ägypten heraufgeführt hast, hat Verderben angerichtet[c]!
8 Sie sind schnell abgewichen von dem Weg, den ich ihnen geboten habe; sie haben sich ein gegossenes Kalb gemacht und haben es angebetet und ihm geopfert und gesagt: Das sind eure Götter, Israel, die dich aus dem Land Ägypten heraufgeführt haben!
9 Und der Herr sprach zu Mose: Ich habe dieses Volk beobachtet, und siehe, es ist ein halsstarriges Volk.
10 So lass mich nun, damit mein Zorn gegen sie entbrennt und ich sie verzehre; dich aber will ich zu einem großen Volk machen!
11 Mose aber besänftigte das Angesicht des Herrn, seines Gottes, und sprach: Ach Herr, warum will dein Zorn gegen dein Volk entbrennen, das du mit so großer Kraft und starker Hand aus dem Land Ägypten geführt hast?
12 Warum sollen die Ägypter sagen: Zum Unheil hat er sie herausgeführt, um sie im Gebirge umzubringen und von der Erde zu vertilgen? Wende dich ab von der Glut deines Zorns und lass dich des Unheils gereuen, das du über dein Volk [bringen willst]!
13 Gedenke an deine Knechte, Abraham, Isaak und Israel, denen du bei dir selbst geschworen und zu denen du gesagt hast: Ich will euren Samen mehren wie die Sterne am Himmel, und dieses ganze Land, das ich versprochen habe, eurem Samen zu geben, sollen sie ewiglich besitzen!
14 Da reute den Herrn das Unheil, das er seinem Volk anzutun gedroht hatte.
Mose zerbricht die Bundestafeln
15 Mose aber wandte sich um und stieg vom Berg hinab, die zwei Tafeln des Zeugnisses in seiner Hand; diese waren auf beiden Seiten beschrieben, vorn und hinten waren sie beschrieben.
16 Und die Tafeln waren das Werk Gottes, und die Schrift war die Schrift Gottes, eingegraben in die Tafeln.
17 Als nun Josua das Geschrei des Volkes hörte, das jauchzte, sprach er zu Mose: Es ist ein Kriegsgeschrei im Lager!
18 Er aber antwortete: Das klingt nicht wie Siegesgeschrei oder wie Geschrei der Niederlage, sondern ich höre einen Wechselgesang!
19 Es geschah aber, als er nahe zum Lager kam und das Kalb und die Reigentänze sah, da entbrannte Moses Zorn, und er warf die Tafeln weg und zerschmetterte sie unten am Berg.
20 Und er nahm das Kalb, das sie gemacht hatten, und verbrannte es mit Feuer und zermalmte es zu Pulver und streute es auf das Wasser und gab es den Kindern Israels zu trinken.
21 Zu Aaron aber sprach Mose: Was hat dir dieses Volk angetan, dass du eine so große Sünde über sie gebracht hast?
22 Da sagte Aaron: Mein Herr lasse seinen Zorn nicht entbrennen; du weißt, dass dieses Volk bösartig ist[d].
23 Sie sprachen zu mir: Mache uns Götter, die uns vorangehen, denn wir wissen nicht, was aus diesem Mann Mose geworden ist, der uns aus dem Land Ägypten heraufgeführt hat!
24 Da sprach ich zu ihnen: Wer Gold hat, der reiße es ab! Da gaben sie mir"s, und ich warf es ins Feuer; daraus ist dieses Kalb geworden!
Die Leviten üben Gericht an den Übertretern
25 Als nun Mose sah, dass das Volk zügellos geworden war — denn Aaron hatte ihm die Zügel schießen lassen, seinen Widersachern zum Spott —,
26 da stellte sich Mose im Tor des Lagers auf und sprach: Her zu mir, wer dem Herrn angehört! Da sammelten sich zu ihm alle Söhne Levis.
27 Und er sprach zu ihnen: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Jeder gürte sein Schwert an seine Hüfte, und geht hin und her, von einem Tor zum anderen im Lager, und jeder erschlage seinen Bruder, seinen Freund und seinen Nächsten!
28 Und die Söhne Levis machten es, wie ihnen Mose gesagt hatte, und an jenem Tag fielen vom Volk an die 3 000 Männer.
29 Und Mose sprach: Füllt heute eure Hände für den Herrn, jeder gegen seinen Sohn und gegen seinen Bruder, damit euch heute der Segen gegeben werde!
Mose verwendet sich vor Gott für das Volk
30 Und es geschah am folgenden Tag, da sprach Mose zum Volk: Ihr habt eine große Sünde begangen! Und nun will ich zu dem Herrn hinaufsteigen; vielleicht kann ich Sühnung erwirken für eure Sünde.
31 Als nun Mose wieder zum Herrn kam, sprach er: Ach! Das Volk hat eine große Sünde begangen, dass sie sich goldene Götter gemacht haben!
32 Und nun vergib ihnen doch ihre Sünde; wenn aber nicht, so tilge mich aus deinem Buch, das du geschrieben hast!
33 Der Herr sprach zu Mose: Ich will den aus meinem Buch tilgen, der gegen mich sündigt!
34 So geh nun hin und führe das Volk an den Ort, von dem ich zu dir geredet habe. Siehe, mein Engel soll vor dir hergehen. Aber am Tag meiner Heimsuchung will ich ihre Sünde an ihnen heimsuchen!
35 Und der Herr schlug das Volk, weil sie sich das Kalb gemacht hatten, das Aaron angefertigt hatte.

32 A nép látta, hogy Mózes már hosszú idő óta nem jött le a hegyről. Ezért Áron köré gyülekeztek, és azt mondták neki: „Készíts nekünk istent,[a] hogy vezessen bennünket, mert nem tudjuk mi történt azzal a Mózessel, aki kihozott minket Egyiptomból!”
2 Áron ezt válaszolta: „Rendben van! Gyűjtsétek össze az arany fülbevalókat feleségeitektől és gyermekeitektől, és hozzátok ide hozzám!”
3 Így is történt. Összegyűjtötték a fülbevalókat, és Áronhoz vitték, 4 aki megolvasztotta az aranyat, és bika formájú szobrot öntött belőle.
A nép így kiáltott fel: „Ez a te istened, Izráel népe! Ő hozott ki téged Egyiptomból!”
5 Amikor Áron látta ezt, oltárt épített a szobor elé, és kihirdette: „Holnap nagy ünnepet tartunk az Örökkévalónak!”

Bika formájú szobrot készítettek aranyból, s azt imádják, annak áldoznak, sőt azt mondják: »Ez a te istened, Izráel népe! Ő hozott ki téged Egyiptomból!«”
9 Még ezt is hozzátette: „Mózes, jól ismerem én ezt a népet, hogy milyen makacs és engedetlen! 10 Elhatároztam, hogy végzek velük! Ne is próbáld megakadályozni, hogy haragom fellángoljon ellenük! Elpusztítom őket, de belőled nagy népet támasztok!”
11 Mózes azonban tovább könyörgött az Örökkévalónak, Istenének: „Örökkévaló Isten! Miért haragszol ennyire népedre, amelyet te magad szabadítottál ki Egyiptomból nagy hatalmaddal és erőddel? 12 Ne mondhassák az egyiptomiak, ha elpusztítod népedet: »Eleve rossz szándékkal vezette őket istenük a pusztába, azért, hogy megölje népét a hegyek között. Csak azért vitte ki őket Egyiptomból, hogy eltörölje őket a föld színéről!« Kérlek, csendesítsd le haragodat, és vond vissza a csapást, amellyel el akartad pusztítani őket! 13 Emlékezz szolgáidra, Ábrahámra, Izsákra és Jákóbra, akiknek önmagadra esküdtél, és megígérted: »Úgy megsokasítom utódaitokat, mint égen a csillagokat. Nekik adom azt a földet, amelyet megígértem — és majd örökké birtokolni fogják.«”
14 Akkor az Örökkévaló megváltoztatta a szándékát, és nem hajtotta végre büntető ítéletét, amelyet népe ellen tervezett.
15 Ezután Mózes megfordult, és lejött a hegyről. Kezében hozta a Szövetség két kőtábláját, amelyek mind a két oldalukon tele voltak írva. 16 Ezeket a kőtáblákat Isten készítette, és ő maga véste beléjük az írást.
17 Józsué, aki Mózessel együtt közeledett a táborhoz, meghallotta az ünneplő tömeg lármáját, és ezt mondta Mózesnek: „Harci lármát hallok a táborból!”
18 De Mózes így válaszolt:
„Nem győzelmi ének ez,
sem a legyőzöttek gyászéneke,
hanem mulatozók kurjongatása!”
19 Amikor Mózes a tábor széléhez ért, és meglátta a bikaborjú-szobrot, meg a táncolva ünneplő tömeget, olyan haragra gerjedt, hogy földhöz vágta a kőtáblákat, és azok össze is törtek ott, a Sínai-hegy alatt. 20 Azután az arany bika-szobrot tűzben megolvasztotta, majd porrá törte. A port vízbe keverte, és megparancsolta a népnek, hogy igyanak belőle mindannyian.
21 Majd felelősségre vonta Áront: „Mit tett veled ez a nép, hogy ilyen nagy bűnbe vitted őket?”
22 Áron ezt felelte: „Ne haragudj, uram! Hiszen tudod, milyen hajlamos ez a nép a rosszra! 23 Azt mondták nekem: »Nézd, nem tudjuk, mi történt azzal a Mózessel, aki kihozott minket Egyiptomból! Készíts nekünk istent, hogy vezessen bennünket!« 24 Erre azt válaszoltam nekik: »Akinek van arany ékszere, hozza ide!« Össze is gyűjtöttek egy csomó aranyat, én meg tűzbe dobtam, és ez a bikaborjú lett belőle.”
25 Mózes megértette, hogy a nép azért vadult meg, mert Áron hagyta, hogy elvaduljanak, és úgy viselkedjenek ellenségeik szeme láttára, mint a bolondok. 26 Ezért Mózes odaállt a tábor kapujába, és így kiáltott: „Ide hozzám, aki hűséges az Örökkévalóhoz!” Ekkor a Lévi törzsébe tartozó férfiak odafutottak hozzá.
27 Mózes azt mondta nekik: „Az Örökkévaló, Izráel Istene ezt mondja: »Mindegyikőtök kösse oldalára a kardját! Menjetek keresztül a táboron, egyik végétől a másikig, és öljetek meg testvért, rokont, barátot és szomszédot is!«”
28 A Lévi törzsébe tartozó férfiak engedelmeskedtek, és megöltek a táborban mintegy 3 000 férfit. 29 Ezután Mózes így szólt hozzájuk: „Ma lettetek az Örökkévaló számára elkülönített szolgák, mivel nem kíméltétek még saját fiaitokat és testvéreiteket sem. Az Örökkévaló ezért megáld benneteket!”
30 A következő reggel Mózes kihirdette a népnek: „Igen súlyos bűnt követtetek el! Most ismét fölmegyek a hegyre az Örökkévalóval beszélni, s talán elérem, hogy megbocsásson nektek.” 31 Föl is ment a hegyre, és ezt mondta az Örökkévalónak: „Jaj, ez a nép igen súlyos bűnt követett el, hogy istent csinált magának aranyból! 32 Mégis arra kérlek, hogy bocsásd meg ezt a bűnüket! Ha nem, töröld ki nevemet könyvedből, amelyet írtál!”
33 De az Örökkévaló ezt felelte: „Csak azoknak a nevét törlöm ki könyvemből, akik vétkeztek ellenem. 34 Most hát indulj tovább! Vezesd a népet arra a helyre, amelyről beszéltem neked! Nézd! Angyalom fog előtted menni. Amikor eljön a számonkérés napja, megbüntetem őket ezért a bűnükért.”
35 Az Örökkévaló valóban meg is büntette a népet. Nagy csapással sújtotta őket amiatt, hogy Áron vezetésével azt a bika formájú szobrot készítették.

32 Quand le peuple s’aperçut que Moïse tardait à redescendre de la montagne, il se rassembla autour d’Aaron et lui dit : Allons ! Fabrique-nous des dieux qui marchent à notre tête, car Moïse, cet homme qui nous a fait sortir d’Egypte, nous ne savons pas ce qui lui est arrivé.
2 Aaron leur répondit : Otez les pendants d’or des oreilles de vos femmes, de vos fils[a] et de vos filles, et apportez-les moi.
3 Tous se défirent des pendants d’or qui étaient à leurs oreilles et les apportèrent à Aaron. 4 Celui-ci les reçut de leurs mains, façonna l’or au burin et en coula la statue d’un veau. Alors le peuple s’écria : Israël, Voici tes dieux, qui t’ont fait sortir d’Egypte[b] !
5 Voyant cela, Aaron construisit un autel devant le veau ; puis il proclama : Demain il y aura fête en l’honneur de l’Eternel.
6 Le lendemain, levé de bon matin, le peuple se mit à offrir des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion. Ils s’assirent pour manger et boire, puis ils se levèrent pour se divertir[c].
Moïse apaise l’Eternel
7 L’Eternel dit à Moïse : Va, redescends, car ton peuple que tu as fait sortir d’Egypte se conduit très mal. 8 Ils se sont bien vite détournés de la voie que je leur avais indiquée. Ils se sont fabriqué un veau de métal fondu, ils se sont prosternés devant lui et lui ont offert des sacrifices en disant : « Israël, voici tes dieux, qui t’ont fait sortir d’Egypte ! »
9 L’Eternel ajouta : Je constate que ce peuple est un peuple rebelle. 10 Maintenant, laisse-moi faire : ma colère s’enflammera contre eux et je les exterminerai. Mais je ferai de toi un autre grand peuple.
11 Alors Moïse supplia l’Eternel son Dieu d’avoir pitié en disant : Eternel, pourquoi ta colère s’enflammerait-elle contre ton peuple que tu as fait sortir d’Egypte par un formidable déploiement de force et de puissance[d] ? 12 Pourquoi les Egyptiens diraient-ils que c’est dans de mauvaises intentions que leur Dieu les a fait sortir de leur pays : pour les faire périr dans la région des montagnes et les faire disparaître de la terre ? Laisse ta colère et renonce à envoyer le malheur à ton peuple. 13 Souviens-toi d’Abraham, d’Isaac et d’Israël, tes serviteurs, envers qui tu t’es engagé par serment en ton propre nom en leur déclarant : « Je rendrai vos descendants aussi nombreux que les étoiles du ciel, je leur donnerai tout ce pays dont j’ai parlé, et ils le posséderont pour toujours[e]. »
14 Alors l’Eternel renonça à faire venir sur son peuple le malheur dont il l’avait menacé.
La colère de Moïse
15 Moïse s’en retourna et redescendit de la montagne, tenant en main les deux tablettes de l’acte de l’alliance. Elles étaient gravées des deux côtés, sur leurs deux faces. 16 Ces tablettes étaient l’œuvre de Dieu, l’écriture était celle de Dieu, gravée sur les tablettes.
17 Quand Josué entendit les clameurs poussées par le peuple, il dit à Moïse : Il y a un bruit de guerre dans le camp.
18 – Non ! répondit Moïse, ce ne sont ni des cris de victoire ni des lamentations de défaite. C’est un bruit de chansons que j’entends.
19 Quand il fut près du camp, qu’il aperçut le veau et vit les chœurs de danses, il entra dans une grande colère : il lança les tablettes qu’il tenait en mains et les mit en pièces au pied de la montagne. 20 Il saisit le veau que le peuple avait fabriqué, le jeta au feu et le réduisit en poussière qu’il éparpilla à la surface de l’eau, puis il fit boire cette eau aux Israélites. 21 Ensuite, il demanda à Aaron : Que t’a donc fait ce peuple pour que tu l’aies entraîné à se rendre coupable d’un si grand péché ?
22 Aaron répondit : Que mon seigneur ne se fâche pas ! Tu sais toi-même que ce peuple est porté à faire le mal. 23 Ils m’ont dit : « Fabrique-nous des dieux qui marchent à notre tête, car ce Moïse, cet homme qui nous a fait sortir d’Egypte, nous ne savons pas ce qui lui est arrivé[f]. » 24 Je leur ai donc répondu : « Que ceux qui ont de l’or s’en dessaisissent ! » Ils m’en ont remis, je l’ai fait fondre au feu et voilà le veau qui en est sorti.
25 Moïse vit que le peuple était déchaîné. Aaron l’avait laissé faire, de sorte qu’il s’exposait au mépris de ses ennemis. 26 Alors il se posta à l’entrée du camp et s’écria : Que tous ceux qui sont pour l’Eternel viennent vers moi !
Tous les membres de la tribu de Lévi se rallièrent à lui. 27 Il leur dit : Voici ce qu’ordonne l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël : Que chacun de vous mette son épée au côté ! Parcourez tout le camp, allez d’une tente à l’autre, que chacun tue jusqu’à son frère, son ami, son proche.
28 Les lévites obéirent à Moïse de sorte que, ce jour-là, environ trois mille hommes du peuple perdirent la vie. 29 Moïse dit aux lévites : Vous avez été investis aujourd’hui au service de l’Eternel, car vous avez combattu chacun contre son fils et son frère, de sorte que l’Eternel vous accorde aujourd’hui sa bénédiction.
Moïse prie l’Eternel de pardonner au peuple
30 Le lendemain, Moïse dit au peuple : Vous vous êtes rendus coupables d’un grand péché. Maintenant je vais remonter auprès de l’Eternel. Peut-être obtiendrai-je un moyen d’expiation pour votre péché.
31 Moïse retourna donc auprès de l’Eternel et dit : Hélas ! ce peuple s’est rendu coupable d’un grand péché, il s’est fait un dieu d’or. 32 Mais maintenant, veuille pardonner ce péché. Sinon, efface-moi du livre[g] que tu as écrit.
33 L’Eternel répondit à Moïse : C’est celui qui a péché contre moi que j’effacerai de mon livre. 34 Maintenant va, conduis le peuple là où je t’ai dit. Mon ange marchera devant toi, mais au jour où j’interviendrai, je les châtierai pour leur péché.
35 L’Eternel frappa le peuple, à cause du veau d’or qu’avait fabriqué Aaron.
