God spreekt met Mozes vanuit de brandende braamstruik
3 Mozes was herder geworden van de kudden van Jetro (= Rehuël), de priester van Midian, de vader van zijn vrouw. Op een keer had hij de kudde naar de overkant van de woestijn gebracht. Daar kwam hij bij de berg Horeb (= Sinaï), de berg van God. 2 Daar kwam de Engel van de Heer naar hem toe. De Engel stond midden in een braamstruik en zag er uit als een vuurvlam. Mozes zag dat de braamstruik wel in brand stond, maar niet verbrandde. 3 Hij dacht: "Dat is wonderlijk! Ik zal eens gaan kijken waarom die braamstruik niet verbrandt." 4 Toen de Heer zag dat hij ging kijken, riep Hij vanuit de braamstruik: "Mozes! Mozes!" Hij antwoordde: "Ja, Heer." 5 Toen zei de Heer: "Kom niet dichterbij. Trek je schoenen uit, want je staat op heilige grond. 6 Ik ben de God van je vader, de God van Abraham, de God van Izaäk en de God van Jakob." Toen verborg Mozes zijn gezicht, want hij was bang om God te zien.
7 De Heer zei: "Ik heb heel goed gezien hoe vreselijk mijn volk lijdt in Egypte. Ik heb gehoord hoe ze het tot Mij uitschreeuwen over hun slavernij. Ik ken hun pijn en verdriet. 8 Daarom ben Ik gekomen om hen uit de macht van de Egyptenaren te bevrijden. Ik zal hen uit Egypte halen. Ik zal hen naar een goed en ruim land brengen, een prachtig en vruchtbaar land. Nu wonen daar nog de Kanaänieten, de Hetieten, de Amorieten, de Perezieten, de Hevieten en de Jebusieten. 9 Ik heb gehoord hoe de Israëlieten het uitschreeuwen. Ik heb gezien hoe vreselijk slecht de Egyptenaren hen behandelen. 10 Daarom stuur Ik jou, Mozes, naar de farao. Jij gaat mijn volk uit Egypte weghalen." 11 Maar Mozes zei: "Ik? Maar dat kan ik helemaal niet! Hoe zou ik naar de farao kunnen gaan? En hoe zou ik het volk uit Egypte kunnen halen?" 12 Toen zei Hij: "Ik ben toch bij je! En Ik zal je bewijzen dat Ik je heb gestuurd: als je het volk uit Egypte hebt meegenomen, zullen jullie Mij op deze berg aanbidden."
13 Toen zei Mozes tegen God: "Maar als ik tegen de Israëlieten zeg: 'De God van jullie voorvaders heeft mij naar jullie toe gestuurd,' dan vragen ze mij misschien: 'Hoe heet Hij dan?' Wat moet ik dan tegen hen zeggen?" 14 Toen zei God tegen Mozes: "Mijn naam is IK BEN. Zeg tegen de Israëlieten: 'IK BEN heeft mij gestuurd. 15 De Heer, de God van jullie voorvaders, de God van Abraham, Izaäk en Jakob, heeft mij naar jullie toe gestuurd.' Dat is voor eeuwig mijn naam. En zo wil Ik voor altijd worden genoemd. 16 Ga. Roep de leiders van het volk Israël bij elkaar en zeg tegen hen: De Heer, de God van jullie voorvaders, de God van Abraham, Izaäk en Jakob, is naar mij toe gekomen. Hij heeft gezegd: 'Ik heb heel goed gezien wat er in Egypte met jullie gebeurt. 17 Ik zal jullie uit de slavernij in Egypte redden. Ik zal jullie brengen naar het land van de Kanaänieten, Hetieten, Amorieten, Perezieten, Hevieten en Jebusieten. Ik zal jullie naar een prachtig en vruchtbaar land brengen.' 18 Ze zullen naar je luisteren. Daarna ga je met de leiders van Israël naar de koning van Egypte. Zeg tegen hem: 'De Heer, de God van de Hebreeën, is naar ons toe gekomen. Laat ons alstublieft drie dagen ver de woestijn in reizen. Want daar willen we aan onze Heer God offers brengen.'
19 Maar Ik weet dat de koning van Egypte jullie niet zal laten gaan. Zelfs niet als Ik hem met geweld daar toe zal dwingen. 20 Daarom zal Ik Egypte straffen met allerlei rampen. Ik zal wonderen bij hen doen. Daarna zal de koning jullie laten gaan. 21 En Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat de Egyptenaren goed zullen zijn voor dit volk. Daardoor zullen jullie niet met lege handen uit Egypte vertrekken. 22 Elke vrouw moet aan haar buurvrouw en huisgenoten vragen om zilveren en gouden voorwerpen. Ook om kleren voor de kinderen. Zo zullen jullie de Egyptenaren beroven."

3 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
2 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
4 And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
7 And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.
10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?
12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
14 And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.
15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.
16 Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt:
17 And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey.
18 And they shall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The Lord God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we beseech thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.
19 And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.
20 And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go.
21 And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians: and it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, ye shall not go empty.
22 But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians.

3 Now Moses was tending the flock of (B)Jethro his father-in-law, (C)the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to (D)Horeb, (E)the mountain of God. 2 And (F)the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. 3 Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this (G)great sight, why the bush does not burn.”
4 So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called (H)to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
5 Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. (I)Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” 6 Moreover He said, (J)“I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for (K)he was afraid to look upon God.
7 And the Lord said: (L)“I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry (M)because of their taskmasters, (N)for I know their [a]sorrows. 8 So (O)I have come down to (P)deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land (Q)to a good and large land, to a land (R)flowing with milk and honey, to the place of (S)the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore, behold, (T)the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the (U)oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 (V)Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”
11 But Moses said to God, (W)“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”
12 So He said, (X)“I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a (Y)sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”
13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”
14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, (Z)‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” 15 Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is (AA)My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’ 16 Go and (AB)gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, (AC)“I have surely visited you and seen what is done to you in Egypt; 17 and I have said (AD)I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.” ’ 18 Then (AE)they will heed your voice; and (AF)you shall come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt; and you shall say to him, ‘The Lord God of the Hebrews has (AG)met with us; and now, please, let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I am sure that the king of Egypt (AH)will not let you go, no, not even by a mighty hand. 20 So I will (AI)stretch out My hand and strike Egypt with (AJ)all My wonders which I will do in its midst; and (AK)after that he will let you go. 21 And (AL)I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be, when you go, that you shall not go empty-handed. 22 (AM)But every woman shall ask of her neighbor, namely, of her who dwells near her house, (AN)articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing; and you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So (AO)you shall plunder the Egyptians.”

Moses at the Burning Bush
3 Moses was taking care of the sheep of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. As he led the sheep to the far side of the desert, he came to Horeb, the mountain of Elohim.
2 The Messenger of Yahweh appeared to him there as flames of fire coming out of a bush. Moses looked, and although the bush was on fire, it was not burning up. 3 So he thought, “Why isn’t this bush burning up? I must go over there and see this strange sight.”
4 When Yahweh saw that Moses had come over to see it, Elohim called to him from the bush, “Moses, Moses!”
Moses answered, “Here I am!”
5 Elohim said, “Don’t come any closer! Take off your sandals because this place where you are standing is holy ground. 6 I am the Elohim of your ancestors,[a] the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at Elohim.
7 Yahweh said, “I have seen the misery of my people in Egypt, and I have heard them crying out because of the slave drivers. I know how much they’re suffering. 8 I have come to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and to bring them from that land to a good land with plenty of room for everyone. It is a land flowing with milk and honey where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites live. 9 I have heard the cry of the people of Israel. I have seen how the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 Now, go! I am sending you to Pharaoh so that you can bring my people Israel out of Egypt.”
11 But Moses said to Elohim, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the people of Israel out of Egypt?”
12 Elohim answered, “I will be with you. And this will be the proof that I sent you: When you bring the people out of Egypt, all of you will worship Elohim on this mountain.”
13 Then Moses replied to Elohim, “Suppose I go to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The Elohim of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ What should I tell them?”
14 Elohim answered Moses, “Ehyeh Who Ehyeh. This is what you must say to the people of Israel: ‘Ehyeh has sent me to you.’”
15 Again Elohim said to Moses, “This is what you must say to the people of Israel: Yahweh Elohim of your ancestors, the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever. This is my title throughout every generation.
16 “Go, assemble the leaders of Israel. Say to them, ‘Yahweh Elohim of your ancestors, the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, appeared to me. He said, “I have paid close attention to you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 I promise I will take you away from your misery in Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, a land flowing with milk and honey.”’
18 “The leaders of Israel will listen to you. Then you and the leaders must go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘Yahweh Elohim of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us travel three days into the desert to offer sacrifices to Yahweh our Elohim.’ 19 I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go, even if he is forced to. 20 So I will use my power to strike Egypt. After all the miracles that I will do there, he will let you go. 21 I will make the Egyptians kind to the people of Israel so that, when you leave, you will not leave empty-handed.
22 “Every Hebrew woman should ask her Egyptian neighbor and any woman living in her home for silver and gold jewelry and for clothes. Put them on your sons and daughters. This way you will strip Egypt of its wealth.”
