Moses and the Burning Bush
3 Moses was taking care of the flock of his father-in-law Jethro. Jethro was the priest of Midian. Moses led the flock to the western side of the desert. He came to Horeb. It was the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him from inside a burning bush. Moses saw that the bush was on fire. But it didn’t burn up. 3 So Moses thought, “I’ll go over and see this strange sight. Why doesn’t the bush burn up?”
4 The Lord saw that Moses had gone over to look. So God spoke to him from inside the bush. He called out, “Moses! Moses!”
“Here I am,” Moses said.
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals. The place you are standing on is holy ground.” 6 He continued, “I am the God of your father. I am the God of Abraham. I am the God of Isaac. And I am the God of Jacob.” When Moses heard that, he turned his face away. He was afraid to look at God.
7 The Lord said, “I have seen how my people are suffering in Egypt. I have heard them cry out because of their slave drivers. I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come down to save them from the Egyptians. I will bring them up out of that land. I will bring them into a good land. It has a lot of room. It is a land that has plenty of milk and honey. The Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites live there. 9 And now Israel’s cry for help has reached me. I have seen how badly the Egyptians are treating them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh. I want you to bring the Israelites out of Egypt. They are my people.”
11 But Moses spoke to God. “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?” he said. “Who am I that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
12 God said, “I will be with you. I will give you a sign. It will prove that I have sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, all of you will worship me on this mountain.”
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the people of Israel. Suppose I say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ And suppose they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?”
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am. Here is what you must say to the Israelites. Tell them, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”
15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord is the God of your fathers. He has sent me to you. He is the God of Abraham. He is the God of Isaac. And he is the God of Jacob.’ My name will always be The Lord. Call me this name for all time to come.
16 “Go. Gather the elders of Israel together. Say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, appeared to me. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God said, “I have watched over you. I have seen what the Egyptians have done to you. 17 I have promised to bring you up out of Egypt where you are suffering. I will bring you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. It is a land that has plenty of milk and honey.” ’
18 “The elders of Israel will listen to you. Then you and the elders must go to the king of Egypt. You must say to him, ‘The Lord has met with us. He is the God of the Hebrews. Let us take a journey that lasts about three days. We want to go into the desert to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you and your people go. Only a mighty hand could make him do that. 20 So I will reach out my hand. I will strike the Egyptians with all the amazing things I will do. After that, their king will let you go.
21 “I will cause the Egyptians to treat you in a kind way. Then when you leave, you will not go with your hands empty. 22 Every woman should ask her neighbor and any woman living in her house for things made out of silver and gold. Ask them for clothes too. Put them on your children. In that way, you will take the wealth of Egypt along with you.”

3 Mose aber hütete die Schafe Jethros, seines Schwiegervaters, des Priesters in Midian, und trieb die Schafe hinten in die Wüste und kam an den Berg Gottes Horeb. 2 Und der Engel des Herrn erschien ihm in einer Feuerflamme mitten aus dem Dornbusch. Und als er sich umsah, siehe, da brannte der Dornbusch im Feuer, und der Dornbusch wurde doch nicht verzehrt. 3 Da sprach Mose: Ich will doch hinzutreten und diese große Erscheinung besehen, warum der Dornbusch nicht verbrennt!
4 Als aber der Herr sah, daß er hinzutrat, um zu sehen, rief ihm Gott mitten aus dem Dornbusch und sprach: Mose, Mose!
Er antwortete: Hier bin ich!
5 Da sprach Gott: Komm nicht näher herzu! Ziehe deine Schuhe aus von deinen Füßen; denn der Ort, darauf du stehest, ist heiliges Land! 6 Und er sprach: Ich bin der Gott deines Vaters, der Gott Abrahams, der Gott Isaaks und der Gott Jakobs[a] ! Da verdeckte Mose sein Angesicht; denn er fürchtete sich, Gott anzuschauen.
7 Und der Herr sprach: Ich habe das Elend meines Volkes in Ägypten angesehen und habe ihr Geschrei gehört über die, welche sie treiben; ja ich kenne ihre Schmerzen; 8 und ich bin herabgefahren, daß ich sie errette von der Ägypter Hand und sie ausführe aus diesem Land in ein gutes und weites Land, in ein Land, das von Milch und Honig fließt, an den Ort der Kanaaniter, Hetiter, Amoriter, Pheresiter, Heviter und Jebusiter. 9 Und nun siehe, das Geschrei der Kinder Israel ist vor mich gekommen, und ich habe auch ihre Bedrückung gesehen, wie die Ägypter sie bedrücken! 10 So geh nun hin, ich will dich zu dem Pharao senden, daß du mein Volk, die Kinder Israel, aus Ägypten führest! -
11 Mose sprach zu Gott: Wer bin ich, daß ich zum Pharao gehe, und daß ich die Kinder Israel aus Ägypten führe? 12 Gott sprach: Ich will mit dir sein; und dies soll dir das Zeichen sein, daß ich dich gesandt habe: Wenn du das Volk aus Ägypten geführt hast, werdet ihr auf diesem Berge Gott dienen.
Der Auftrag an Mose
13 Mose sprach zu Gott: Siehe, wenn ich zu den Kindern Israel komme und zu ihnen sage: Der Gott eurer Väter hat mich zu euch gesandt, und sie mich fragen werden: Wie heißt sein Name? was soll ich ihnen sagen?
14 Gott sprach zu Mose: “Ich bin, der ich bin!“ Und er sprach: So sollst du zu den Kindern Israel sagen:“Ich bin“, der hat mich zu euch gesandt.
15 Und nochmals sprach Gott zu Mose: So sollst du zu den Kindern Israel sagen: Der Herr, der Gott eurer Väter, der Gott Abrahams, der Gott Isaaks und der Gott Jakobs, hat mich zu euch gesandt; das ist mein Name ewiglich und meine Benennung für und für.
16 Geh hin und versammle die Ältesten von Israel und sprich zu ihnen: Der Herr, der Gott eurer Väter, der Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Jakobs, ist mir erschienen und hat gesagt: Ich habe achtgegeben auf euch und auf das, was euch in Ägypten widerfahren ist, 17 und ich sage euch: Ich will euch aus dem Elend Ägyptens herausführen in das Land der Kanaaniter, Hetiter, Amoriter, Pheresiter, Heviter und Jebusiter, in das Land, das von Milch und Honig fließt.
18 Und wenn sie auf dich hören, so sollst du und die Ältesten von Israel zum König von Ägypten hineingehen und zu ihm sagen: Der Herr, der Hebräer Gott, ist uns begegnet. So laß uns nun drei Tagereisen weit in die Wüste gehen, daß wir dem Herrn, unserm Gott, opfern! 19 Aber ich weiß, daß euch der König von Ägypten nicht wird ziehen lassen, wenn er nicht gezwungen wird durch eine starke Hand. 20 Aber ich werde meine Hand ausstrecken und Ägypten mit allen meinen Wundern schlagen, die ich darin tun will; darnach wird er euch ziehen lassen.
21 Und ich will diesem Volk Gunst verschaffen bei den Ägyptern, daß, wenn ihr auszieht, ihr nicht leer ausziehen müßt; 22 sondern eine jede Frau soll von ihrer Nachbarin und Hausgenossin silberne und goldene Geschirre und Kleider fordern; die sollt ihr auf eure Söhne und Töchter legen und Ägypten berauben.

3 Och Mose vaktade fåren åt sin svärfader Jetro, prästen i Midjan. Och han drev en gång fåren bortom öknen och kom så till Guds berg Horeb.
2 Där uppenbarade sig HERRENS ängel för honom i en eldslåga som slog upp ur en buske. Han såg att busken brann av elden, och att busken dock icke blev förtärd.
3 Då tänkte Mose: »Jag vill gå ditbort och betrakta den underbara synen och se varför busken icke brinner upp.»
4 När då HERREN såg att han gick åstad för att se, ropade Gud till honom ur busken och sade: »Mose! Mose!» Han svarade: »Här är jag.»
5 Då sade han: »Träd icke hit; drag dina skor av dina fötter, ty platsen där du står är helig mark.»
6 Och han sade ytterligare: »Jag är din faders Gud, Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud och Jakobs Gud.» Då skylde Mose sitt ansikte, ty han fruktade för att se på Gud.
7 Och HERREN sade: »Jag har nogsamt sett mitt folks betryck i Egypten, och jag har hört huru de ropa över sina plågare; jag vet vad de måste lida.
8 Därför har jag stigit ned för att rädda dem ur egyptiernas våld och föra dem från det landet upp till ett gott och rymligt land, ett land som flyter av mjölk och honung, det land där kananéer, hetiter, amoréer, perisséer, hivéer och jebuséer bo.
9 Fördenskull, eftersom Israels barns rop har kommit till mig, och jag därjämte har sett huru egyptierna förtrycka dem,
10 därför må du nu gå åstad, jag vill sända dig till Farao; och du skall föra mitt folk, Israels barn, ut ur Egypten»
11 Men Mose sade till Gud: »Vem är jag, att jag skulle gå till Farao, och att jag skulle föra Israels barn ut ur Egypten?»
12 Han svarade: »Jag vill vara med dig. Och detta skall för dig vara tecknet på att det är jag som har sänt dig: när du har fört folket ut ur Egypten, skolen I hålla gudstjänst på detta berg.»
13 Då sade Mose till Gud: »När jag nu kommer till Israels barn och säger till dem: 'Edra fäders Gud har sänt mig till eder', och de fråga mig; 'Vad är hans namn?', vad skall jag då svara dem?»
14 Gud sade till Mose: »Jag är den jag är.» Och han sade vidare: »Så skall du säga till Israels barn: 'Jag är' har sänt mig till eder.
15 Och Gud sade ytterligare till Mose: »Så skall du säga till Israels barn: HERREN, edra fäders Gud, Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud och Jakobs Gud, har sänt mig till eder. Detta skall vara mitt namn evinnerligen, och så skall man nämna mig från släkte till släkte.
16 Gå nu åstad och församla de äldste i Israel, och säg till dem: HERREN, edra fäders Gud, Abrahams, Isaks och Jakobs Gud, har uppenbarat sig för mig, och han har sagt: 'Jag har sett till eder och har sett det som vederfares eder Egypten;
17 därför är nu mitt ord: jag vill föra eder bort ifrån betrycket i Egypten upp till kananéernas, hetiternas, amoréernas, perisséernas, hivéernas och jebuséernas land, ett land som flyter av mjölk och honung.'
18 Och de skola lyssna till dina ord; och du skall tillika med de äldste i Israel gå till konungen i Egypten, och I skolen säga till honom: HERREN, hebréernas Gud, har visat sig för oss, så låt oss nu gå tre dagsresor in i öknen och offra åt HERREN, vår Gud.'
19 Dock vet jag att konungen i Egypten icke skall tillstädja eder att gå, icke ens när han får känna min starka hand.
20 Men jag skall räcka ut min hand och slå Egypten med alla slags under, som jag vill göra där; sedan skall han släppa eder.
21 Och jag vill låta detta folk finna nåd för egyptiernas ögon, så att I, när I dragen bort, icke skolen draga bort med tomma händer;
22 utan var kvinna skall av sin grannkvinna och av den främmande kvinna som bor i hennes hus begära klenoder av silver och guld, så ock kläder. Dessa skolen I sätta på edra söner och döttrar. Så skolen I taga byte från egyptierna.» åsyftade hebreiska uttrycket för HERREN, egentligen Jahvé, hos oss vanligen uttalat Jehová, kan översättas med 'Han är'.

3 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro(A) his father-in-law, the priest of Midian,(B) and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,(C) the mountain(D) of God. 2 There the angel of the Lord(E) appeared to him in flames of fire(F) from within a bush.(G) Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”
4 When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called(H) to him from within the bush,(I) “Moses! Moses!”
And Moses said, “Here I am.”(J)
5 “Do not come any closer,”(K) God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”(L) 6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father,[a] the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.”(M) At this, Moses hid(N) his face, because he was afraid to look at God.(O)
7 The Lord said, “I have indeed seen(P) the misery(Q) of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned(R) about their suffering.(S) 8 So I have come down(T) to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land,(U) a land flowing with milk and honey(V)—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites(W) and Jebusites.(X) 9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing(Y) them. 10 So now, go. I am sending(Z) you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”(AA)
11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I(AB) that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
12 And God said, “I will be with you.(AC) And this will be the sign(AD) to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you[b] will worship God on this mountain.(AE)”
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’(AF) Then what shall I tell them?”
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.[c] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am(AG) has sent me to you.’”
15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord,[d] the God of your fathers(AH)—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob(AI)—has sent me to you.’
16 “Go, assemble the elders(AL) of Israel and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(AM)—appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen(AN) what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 And I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt(AO) into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.’(AP)
18 “The elders of Israel will listen(AQ) to you. Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews,(AR) has met(AS) with us. Let us take a three-day journey(AT) into the wilderness to offer sacrifices(AU) to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand(AV) compels him. 20 So I will stretch out my hand(AW) and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders(AX) that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.(AY)
21 “And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed(AZ) toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go empty-handed.(BA) 22 Every woman is to ask her neighbor and any woman living in her house for articles of silver(BB) and gold(BC) and for clothing, which you will put on your sons and daughters. And so you will plunder(BD) the Egyptians.”(BE)
