God sluit een verbond met Israël
24 Toen zei de Heer tegen Mozes: "Klim naar boven en kom naar Mij toe. Breng Aäron, zijn zonen Nadab en Abihu en 70 van de leiders van Israël mee. Zij moeten op een afstand neerknielen. 2 Jij mag bij Mij komen, maar zij niet. Ook het volk mag niet met je mee de berg op komen."
3 Toen vertelde Mozes aan het volk alles wat de Heer had gezegd en bevolen. Het hele volk antwoordde als één man: "We zullen alles doen wat de Heer heeft gezegd."
4 Mozes schreef alles op wat de Heer had gezegd. Vroeg in de ochtend bouwde hij onderaan de berg een altaar. Hij zette daarbij twaalf stenen overeind, één voor elke stam van Israël. 5 Toen stuurde hij de jonge mannen van de Israëlieten weg om dieren te slachten en te offeren als dank-offers voor de Heer. 6 Mozes deed de helft van het bloed in schalen. De andere helft wierp hij rondom tegen de zijkanten van het altaar. 7 Hij nam het boek van het verbond en las het aan het volk voor. En ze zeiden: "We zullen alles doen wat de Heer heeft gezegd. We zullen eraan gehoorzamen." 8 Toen nam Mozes het bloed in de schalen, sprenkelde het op het volk en zei: "Met dit bloed sluit de Heer zijn verbond met jullie. Jullie hebben de wetten en regels van dat verbond nu gehoord."
9 Daarna klom Mozes met Aäron, Nadab en Abihu en 70 van de leiders van Israël de berg op. 10 Ze zagen de God van Israël. Het was alsof er onder zijn voeten tegels lagen van lazuursteen, zo helder blauw als de hemel zelf. 11 En ook al zagen ze God, toch bleven ze in leven. Zijn aanwezigheid doodde hen niet.[a] Ze zagen God en aten en dronken.
12 De Heer zei tegen Mozes: "Kom naar Mij toe op de top van de berg en blijf daar. Ik zal je twee platte stenen geven waarop Ik de wetten en leefregels van mijn verbond heb geschreven. Jij moet het volk die wetten en leefregels leren." 13 Toen klom Mozes met zijn dienaar Jozua de berg van God op. 14 Maar tegen de leiders zei hij: "Wacht hier op ons tot we bij jullie terugkomen. Aäron en Hur blijven bij jullie. Als er iets is, kunnen jullie naar hen toe gaan."
15 Toen klom Mozes de berg op. De wolk bedekte de berg. 16 De stralende aanwezigheid van de Heer was op de berg Sinaï. De wolk bedekte de berg zes dagen lang. Op de zevende dag riep Hij Mozes vanuit de wolk. 17 De aanwezigheid van de Heer leek op een laaiend vuur op de top van de berg. Alle Israëlieten zagen het. 18 Mozes ging de wolk in toen hij de berg op geklommen was. Hij bleef 40 dagen en 40 nachten op de berg.

24 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. You are to worship at a distance, 2 but Moses alone is to approach the Lord; the others must not come near. And the people may not come up with him.’
3 When Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and laws, they responded with one voice, ‘Everything the Lord has said we will do.’ 4 Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said.
He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings to the Lord. 6 Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he splashed against the altar. 7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, ‘We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.’
8 Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, ‘This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.’
9 Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up 10 and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky. 11 But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.
12 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.’
13 Then Moses set out with Joshua his assistant, and Moses went up on the mountain of God. 14 He said to the elders, ‘Wait here for us until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur are with you, and anyone involved in a dispute can go to them.’
15 When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, 16 and the glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud. 17 To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. 18 Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

24 Dios dijo a Moisés:
— Sube a encontrarte conmigo acompañado de Aarón, Nadab y Abihú y de setenta ancianos de Israel. Cuando estén a una cierta distancia se postrarán. 2 Sólo tú podrás aproximarte a mí; los demás no deberán acercarse, ni el pueblo subirá contigo.
3 Moisés comunicó al pueblo todo lo que el Señor le había dicho y ordenado, y el pueblo unánimemente contestó:
— ¡Haremos todo lo que ha dicho el Señor!
4 Entonces Moisés puso por escrito todas las cosas dichas por el Señor. Al día siguiente se levantó muy temprano, construyó un altar al pie del monte y colocó doce piedras en representación de las doce tribus de Israel. 5 Después mandó a algunos jóvenes israelitas ofrecer holocaustos e inmolar los novillos como sacrificios de comunión en honor del Señor. 6 Moisés recogió la mitad de la sangre en una vasija, y con la otra mitad roció el altar. 7 Seguidamente, tomó el libro de la alianza y lo leyó en voz alta al pueblo, el cual respondió:
— Nosotros obedeceremos al Señor y seguiremos sus órdenes.
8 Entonces Moisés tomó el resto de la sangre y roció con ella al pueblo diciendo:
— Esta es la sangre que confirma la alianza que el Señor ha hecho con ustedes, de acuerdo con todas las cláusulas leídas.
9 Moisés, en compañía de Aarón, Nadab, Abihú y los setenta ancianos de Israel, subió al monte, 10 y allí vieron al Dios de Israel: bajo sus pies tenía una especie de escabel de zafiro, tan resplandeciente como el mismo cielo. 11 Y aunque contemplaron a Dios, él no hizo perecer a aquellos privilegiados de Israel. Después comieron y bebieron.
Moisés en el monte Sinaí
12 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
— Sube a encontrarte conmigo en la montaña y quédate allí, pues te daré unas losas de piedra con la ley y los mandatos que he escrito para instruir a los israelitas.
13 Moisés, junto con su ayudante Josué, subió al monte de Dios, 14 después de decir a los ancianos:
— Esperen aquí, hasta que regresemos. Si surge algún problema, acudan a Aarón y Jur, ellos se quedan aquí.
15 Cuando Moisés subió al monte, una nube lo envolvió: 16 era la gloria del Señor que descansaba sobre el monte Sinaí. Durante seis días lo envolvió la nube. Al séptimo día el Señor llamó a Moisés desde la nube. 17 La gloria del Señor era a los ojos de los israelitas como un fuego voraz sobre la cumbre del monte. 18 Moisés se adentró en la nube, subió al monte, y permaneció allí cuarenta días y cuarenta noches.
