Exodus 22

22 If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.
2 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.
3 If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.
4 If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.
5 If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.
6 If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.
7 If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double.
8 If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour's goods.
9 For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour.
10 If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it:
11 Then shall an oath of the Lord be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour's goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good.
12 And if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof.
13 If it be torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn.
14 And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good.
15 But if the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be an hired thing, it came for his hire.
16 And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.
17 If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.
18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
19 Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death.
20 He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed.
21 Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
22 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child.
23 If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry;
24 And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
25 If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury.
26 If thou at all take thy neighbour's raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down:
27 For that is his covering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.
28 Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people.
29 Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto me.
30 Likewise shalt thou do with thine oxen, and with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam; on the eighth day thou shalt give it me.
31 And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.

22 Om någon stjäl en oxe eller ett får som han sedan slaktar eller säljer, ska han betala fem oxar för varje oxe och fyra får för varje får.
2 Om en tjuv blir tagen på bar gärning och dödad är det inte blodskuld. 3 Men om det sker i dagsljus är det blodskuld. En tjuv ska ge full ersättning men har han inte någonting att betala med, måste han säljas som slav för att betala sin skuld.
4 Om ett stulet djur, vare sig det är en oxe, en åsna eller ett får, hittas levande hos tjuven ska han ge dubbel ersättning.
5 Om någon bränner en åker eller en vingård och låter elden sprida sig till en annans åker[a], ska han betala för all skada genom att ge ägaren till åkern eller vingården det bästa av sin egen skörd.
6 Om elden kommer lös och sprider sig till törnbuskar och sädeskärvarna eller den oskurna säden bränns upp, ska den som vållat branden ge full ersättning.
7 Om någon överlämnar pengar eller varor till förvaring hos någon annan och det blir stulet, ska tjuven betala dubbel ersättning om man får fast honom. 8 Men om man inte får fast tjuven, ska den som förvarade värdesakerna föras fram inför Gud[b], så att man kan ta reda på om det är han som tagit sakerna.
9 Alltid när det är fråga om tillgrepp, vare sig det gäller en oxe, en åsna, ett får, kläder eller något annat förlorat som någon påstår tillhöra honom, ska båda parterna föras fram inför Gud. Den som Gud[c] förklarar skyldig ska betala det dubbla värdet till den andre.
10 Om någon ber sin granne att ta hand om en åsna, en oxe, ett får eller något annat djur som han äger och detta dör, skadas eller försvinner och ingen har sett vad som hänt, 11 måste grannen avlägga en ed inför Herren att han inte har tagit den andres egendom och ägaren måste tro på eden. Ersättning ska inte betalas ut. 12 Men om djuret har stulits, ska den som haft ansvar för det betala ersättning till ägaren. 13 Om det har rivits ihjäl, ska han kunna visa upp djurkroppen som bevis och slipper då att ersätta skadan.
14 Om någon lånar ett djur av en annan och det blir skadat eller dödat och ägaren inte är där just då, måste mannen som lånat det betala full ersättning. 15 Men om ägaren är närvarande, behöver han inte betala och om han har hyrt det, har ägaren rätt till hyran.[d]
Allmänna regler
16 Om någon förför en orörd flicka som inte är trolovad och ligger med henne, ska han betala brudgåvan för henne och ta henne till hustru. 17 Men om hennes far vägrar att låta honom gifta sig med henne, ska han ändå ge den penningsumma som man brukar betala för en orörd flicka.
18 En häxa ska du inte låta leva.
19 Den som har sexuellt umgänge med ett djur ska straffas med döden.
20 Den som offrar till någon annan gud än Herren ska förgöras.
21 En utlänning ska du inte förtrycka. Ni har ju själva varit främlingar i Egypten.
22 Ni ska inte behandla änkor och faderlösa illa. 23 Om du gör det och de ropar till mig om hjälp, ska jag höra deras rop. 24 Min vrede kommer då att drabba er och jag ska döda er med svärd, så att era hustrur blir änkor och era barn faderlösa.
25 Om du lånar ut pengar till någon av dina medbröder som är fattig, får du inte vara som ockrarna; du får inte ta ut ränta av honom. 26 Om du har tagit din nästas mantel som pant för skulden, måste du lämna tillbaka den till honom före kvällen. 27 Den är det enda täcke han har, hur ska han kunna sova utan den? Om han ber till mig om hjälp, ska jag lyssna till hans bön, för jag är barmhärtig.
28 Du ska inte häda Gud och du ska inte förbanna den som är ledare för ditt folk.
29 Du ska vara noga med att offra av din skörd och ditt vin. Din förstfödde son ska du ge till mig.
30 På samma sätt ska du göra med det förstfödda av din boskap. Du ska ge det till mig på den åttonde dagen, sedan det under sju dagar har varit tillsammans med modern.
31 Ni är mina heliga. Ni ska inte äta kött av ett ihjälrivet djur. Kasta det till hundarna.

22 [a] “If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it or sells it, he shall repay five oxen for an ox, and (A)four sheep for a sheep. 2 [b] If a thief is found (B)breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no bloodguilt for him, 3 but if the sun has risen on him, there shall be bloodguilt for him. He[c] shall surely pay. If he has nothing, then (C)he shall be sold for his theft. 4 If the stolen beast (D)is found alive in his possession, whether it is an ox or a donkey or a sheep, (E)he shall pay double.
5 “If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed over, or lets his beast loose and it feeds in another man's field, he shall make restitution from the best in his own field and in his own vineyard.
6 “If fire breaks out and catches in thorns so that the stacked grain or the standing grain or the field is consumed, he who started the fire shall make full restitution.
7 “If a man gives to his neighbor money or goods to keep safe, and it is stolen from the man's house, then, if the thief is found, (F)he shall pay double. 8 If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall come near to God to show whether or not he has put his hand to his neighbor's property. 9 For every breach of trust, whether it is for an ox, for a donkey, for a sheep, for a cloak, or for any kind of lost thing, of which one says, ‘This is it,’ the case of both parties shall come before God. The one whom God condemns shall pay double to his neighbor.
10 “If a man gives to his neighbor a donkey or an ox or a sheep or any beast to keep safe, and it dies or is injured or is driven away, without anyone seeing it, 11 (G)an oath by the Lord shall be between them both to see whether or not he has put his hand to his neighbor's property. The owner shall accept the oath, and he shall not make restitution. 12 But if (H)it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner. 13 If it is torn by beasts, let him bring it as evidence. He shall not make restitution for what has been torn.
14 “If a man borrows anything of his neighbor, and it is injured or dies, the owner not being with it, he shall make full restitution. 15 If the owner was with it, he shall not make restitution; if it was hired, it came for its hiring fee.[d]
Laws for a Just Community
16 (I)“If a man seduces a virgin[e] who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price[f] for her and make her his wife. 17 If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, (J)he shall pay money equal to the (K)bride-price for virgins.
18 (L)“You shall not permit a sorceress to live.
19 (M)“Whoever lies with an animal shall be put to death.
20 (N)“Whoever sacrifices to any god, other than the Lord alone, shall be devoted to destruction.[g]
21 (O)“You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. 22 (P)You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. 23 If you do mistreat them, and they (Q)cry out to me, I will surely (R)hear their cry, 24 and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and (S)your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.
25 (T)“If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him. 26 (U)If ever you take your neighbor's cloak in pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down, 27 for that is his only covering, and it is his cloak for his body; in what else shall he sleep? And if he (V)cries to me, I will hear, for I am (W)compassionate.
28 (X)“You shall not revile God, nor (Y)curse a ruler of your people.
29 “You shall not delay to offer from the fullness of your harvest and from the outflow of your presses. (Z)The firstborn of your sons you shall give to me. 30 (AA)You shall do the same with your oxen and with your sheep: (AB)seven days it shall be with its mother; on the eighth day you shall give it to me.
31 (AC)“You shall be consecrated to me. Therefore (AD)you shall not eat any flesh that is torn by beasts in the field; (AE)you shall throw it to the dogs.
