20 Then God said all these words:
א 2 “I am Adonai your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the abode of slavery.
ב 3 “You are to have no other gods before me. 4 You are not to make for yourselves a carved image or any kind of representation of anything in heaven above, on the earth beneath or in the water below the shoreline. 5 You are not to bow down to them or serve them; for I, Adonai your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but displaying grace to the thousandth generation of those who love me and obey my mitzvot.
ג 7 “You are not to use lightly the name of Adonai your God, because Adonai will not leave unpunished someone who uses his name lightly.
ד 8 “Remember the day, Shabbat, to set it apart for God. 9 You have six days to labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Shabbat for Adonai your God. On it, you are not to do any kind of work — not you, your son or your daughter, not your male or female slave, not your livestock, and not the foreigner staying with you inside the gates to your property. 11 For in six days, Adonai made heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. This is why Adonai blessed the day, Shabbat, and separated it for himself.
ה 12 “Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land which Adonai your God is giving you.
ו 13 “Do not murder.
ז (14) “Do not commit adultery.
ח (15) “Do not steal.
ט (16) “Do not give false evidence against your neighbor.
י 14 (17) “Do not covet your neighbor’s house; do not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male or female slave, his ox, his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
(A: vii) 15 (18) All the people experienced the thunder, the lightning, the sound of the shofar, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled. Standing at a distance, 16 (19) they said to Moshe, “You, speak with us; and we will listen. But don’t let God speak with us, or we will die.” 17 (20) Moshe answered the people, “Don’t be afraid, because God has come only to test you and make you fear him, so that you won’t commit sins.” 18 (21) So the people stood at a distance, but Moshe approached the thick darkness where God was.
(A: Maftir) 19 (22) Adonai said to Moshe, “Here is what you are to say to the people of Isra’el: ‘You yourselves have seen that I spoke with you from heaven. 20 (23) You are not to make with me gods of silver, nor are you to make gods of gold for yourselves. (S: Maftir) 21 (24) For me you need make only an altar of earth; on it you will sacrifice your burnt offerings, peace offerings, sheep, goats and cattle. In every place where I cause my name to be mentioned, I will come to you and bless you. 22 (25) If you do make me an altar of stone, you are not to build it of cut stones; for if you use a tool on it, you profane it. 23 (26) Likewise, you are not to use steps to go up to my altar; so that you won’t be indecently uncovered.’”

Gott gibt die zehn Gebote
20 Und Gott redete alle diese Worte und sprach:
2 Ich bin der Herr, dein Gott, der ich dich aus dem Land Ägypten, aus dem Haus der Knechtschaft, herausgeführt habe.
3 Du sollst keine anderen Götter[a] neben mir haben!
4 Du sollst dir kein Bildnis noch irgendein Gleichnis machen, weder von dem, was oben im Himmel, noch von dem, was unten auf Erden, noch von dem, was in den Wassern, unter der Erde ist.
5 Bete sie nicht an und diene ihnen nicht! Denn ich, der Herr, dein Gott, bin ein eifersüchtiger Gott, der die Schuld der Väter heimsucht an den Kindern bis in das dritte und vierte Glied derer, die mich hassen,
6 der aber Gnade erweist an vielen Tausenden, die mich lieben und meine Gebote halten.
7 Du sollst den Namen des Herrn, deines Gottes, nicht missbrauchen[b]! Denn der Herr wird den nicht ungestraft lassen, der seinen Namen missbraucht.
8 Gedenke an den Sabbattag und heilige ihn!
9 Sechs Tage sollst du arbeiten und alle deine Werke tun;
10 aber am siebten Tag ist der Sabbat des Herrn, deines Gottes; da sollst du kein Werk tun; weder du, noch dein Sohn, noch deine Tochter, noch dein Knecht, noch deine Magd, noch dein Vieh, noch dein Fremdling, der innerhalb deiner Tore lebt.
11 Denn in sechs Tagen hat der Herr Himmel und Erde gemacht und das Meer und alles, was darin ist, und er ruhte am siebten Tag; darum hat der Herr den Sabbattag gesegnet und geheiligt.
12 Du sollst deinen Vater und deine Mutter ehren, damit du lange lebst in dem Land, das der Herr, dein Gott, dir gibt!
13 Du sollst nicht töten[c]!
14 Du sollst nicht ehebrechen!
15 Du sollst nicht stehlen!
16 Du sollst kein falsches Zeugnis reden gegen deinen Nächsten!
17 Du sollst nicht begehren das Haus deines Nächsten! Du sollst nicht begehren die Frau deines Nächsten, noch seinen Knecht, noch seine Magd, noch sein Rind, noch seinen Esel, noch irgendetwas, das dein Nächster hat!
18 Und das ganze Volk nahm das Donnern und die Flammen wahr und den Schall der Schopharhörner und den rauchenden Berg. Als nun das Volk dies wahrnahm, zitterte es und stand von ferne,
19 und es sprach zu Mose: Rede du mit uns, und wir wollen hören; aber Gott soll nicht mit uns reden, sonst müssen wir sterben!
20 Mose aber sprach zum Volk: Fürchtet euch nicht, denn Gott ist gekommen, um euch zu prüfen, und damit die Furcht vor ihm euch vor Augen sei, damit ihr nicht sündigt!
21 Und das Volk stand von ferne; Mose aber nahte sich zu dem Dunkel, in dem Gott war.
22 Und der Herr sprach zu Mose: So sollst du zu den Kindern Israels sprechen: Ihr habt gesehen, dass ich vom Himmel her zu euch geredet habe.
23 Darum sollt ihr neben mir keine Götter aus Silber machen, auch Götter aus Gold sollt ihr euch nicht machen.
24 Einen Altar aus Erde sollst du mir machen und darauf deine Brandopfer und deine Friedensopfer, deine Schafe und deine Rinder darbringen; an jedem Ort, wo ich meines Namens gedenken lasse, dort will ich zu dir kommen und dich segnen.
25 Und wenn du mir einen steinernen Altar machen willst, sollst du ihn nicht aus behauenen Steinen bauen; denn wenn du deinen Meißel darüber schwingen würdest, so würdest du ihn entweihen.
26 Du sollst auch nicht auf Stufen zu meinem Altar hinaufsteigen, damit deine Blöße nicht aufgedeckt wird vor ihm!
