New International Version

The Ten Commandments^(A)

20 And God spoke^(B) all these words:^(C)

²“I am the Lord your God,^(D) who brought you out^(E) of Egypt,^(F) out of the land of slavery.^(G)

³“You shall have no other gods before^[a] me.^(H)

⁴“You shall not make for yourself an image^(I) in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. ⁵You shall not bow down to them or worship^(J) them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,^(K) punishing the children for the sin of the parents^(L) to the third and fourth generation^(M) of those who hate me, ⁶but showing love to a thousand^(N) generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

⁷“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.^(O)

⁸“Remember the Sabbath^(P) day by keeping it holy. ⁹Six days you shall labor and do all your work,^(Q) ¹⁰but the seventh day is a sabbath^(R) to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. ¹¹For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,^(S) the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested^(T) on the seventh day.^(U) Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

¹²“Honor your father and your mother,^(V) so that you may live long^(W) in the land^(X) the Lord your God is giving you.

¹³“You shall not murder.^(Y)

¹⁴“You shall not commit adultery.^(Z)

¹⁵“You shall not steal.^(AA)

¹⁶“You shall not give false testimony^(AB) against your neighbor.^(AC)

¹⁷“You shall not covet^(AD) your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

¹⁸When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet^(AE) and saw the mountain in smoke,^(AF) they trembled with fear.^(AG) They stayed at a distance ¹⁹and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak^(AH) to us or we will die.”^(AI)

²⁰Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid.^(AJ) God has come to test^(AK) you, so that the fear^(AL) of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”^(AM)

²¹The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness^(AN) where God was.

Idols and Altars

²²Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites this: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven:^(AO) ²³Do not make any gods to be alongside me;^(AP) do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.^(AQ)

²⁴“‘Make an altar^(AR) of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings^(AS) and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name^(AT) to be honored, I will come to you and bless^(AU) you. ²⁵If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool^(AV) on it. ²⁶And do not go up to my altar on steps, or your private parts^(AW) may be exposed.’

2 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.^(A)

²By the seventh day^(B) God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.^(C) ³Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy,^(D) because on it he rested^(E) from all the work of creating^(F) that he had done.

Adam and Eve

⁴This is the account^(G) of the heavens and the earth when they were created,^(H) when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

⁵Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth^[a] and no plant had yet sprung up,^(I) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth^(J) and there was no one to work the ground, ⁶but streams^[b] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. ⁷Then the Lord God formed^(K) a man^[c]^(L) from the dust^(M) of the ground^(N) and breathed into his nostrils the breath^(O) of life,^(P) and the man became a living being.^(Q)

⁸Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;^(R) and there he put the man he had formed. ⁹The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees^(S) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life^(T) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.^(U)

¹⁰A river^(V) watering the garden flowed from Eden;^(W) from there it was separated into four headwaters. ¹¹The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,^(X) where there is gold. ¹²(The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin^[d]^(Y) and onyx are also there.) ¹³The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.^[e] ¹⁴The name of the third river is the Tigris;^(Z) it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.^(AA)

¹⁵The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden^(AB) to work it and take care of it. ¹⁶And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;^(AC) ¹⁷but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,^(AD) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”^(AE)

¹⁸The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”^(AF)

¹⁹Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals^(AG) and all the birds in the sky.^(AH) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called^(AI) each living creature,^(AJ) that was its name. ²⁰So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam^[f] no suitable helper^(AK) was found. ²¹So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;^(AL) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs^[g] and then closed up the place with flesh. ²²Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib^[h]^(AM) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

²³The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;^(AN)
she shall be called^(AO) ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.^(AP)”

²⁴That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united^(AQ) to his wife, and they become one flesh.^(AR)

²⁵Adam and his wife were both naked,^(AS) and they felt no shame.

Isaiah 65

New International Version

Judgment and Salvation

65 “I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me;
    I was found by those who did not seek me.^(A)
To a nation^(B) that did not call on my name,^(C)
    I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’
²All day long I have held out my hands
    to an obstinate people,^(D)
who walk in ways not good,
    pursuing their own imaginations^(E)—
³a people who continually provoke me
    to my very face,^(F)
offering sacrifices in gardens^(G)
    and burning incense^(H) on altars of brick;
⁴who sit among the graves^(I)
    and spend their nights keeping secret vigil;
who eat the flesh of pigs,^(J)
    and whose pots hold broth of impure meat;
⁵who say, ‘Keep away; don’t come near me,
    for I am too sacred^(K) for you!’
Such people are smoke^(L) in my nostrils,
    a fire that keeps burning all day.

⁶“See, it stands written before me:
    I will not keep silent^(M) but will pay back^(N) in full;
    I will pay it back into their laps^(O)—
⁷both your sins^(P) and the sins of your ancestors,”^(Q)
    says the Lord.
“Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains
    and defied me on the hills,^(R)
I will measure into their laps
    the full payment^(S) for their former deeds.”

⁸This is what the Lord says:

“As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes^(T)
    and people say, ‘Don’t destroy it,
    there is still a blessing in it,’
so will I do in behalf of my servants;^(U)
    I will not destroy them all.
⁹I will bring forth descendants^(V) from Jacob,
    and from Judah those who will possess^(W) my mountains;
my chosen^(X) people will inherit them,
    and there will my servants live.^(Y)
¹⁰Sharon^(Z) will become a pasture for flocks,^(AA)
    and the Valley of Achor^(AB) a resting place for herds,
    for my people who seek^(AC) me.

¹¹“But as for you who forsake^(AD) the Lord
    and forget my holy mountain,^(AE)
who spread a table for Fortune
    and fill bowls of mixed wine^(AF) for Destiny,
¹²I will destine you for the sword,^(AG)
    and all of you will fall in the slaughter;^(AH)
for I called but you did not answer,^(AI)
    I spoke but you did not listen.^(AJ)
You did evil in my sight
    and chose what displeases me.”^(AK)

¹³Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“My servants will eat,^(AL)
    but you will go hungry;^(AM)
my servants will drink,^(AN)
    but you will go thirsty;^(AO)
my servants will rejoice,^(AP)
    but you will be put to shame.^(AQ)
¹⁴My servants will sing^(AR)
    out of the joy of their hearts,
but you will cry out^(AS)
    from anguish of heart
    and wail in brokenness of spirit.
¹⁵You will leave your name
    for my chosen ones to use in their curses;^(AT)
the Sovereign Lord will put you to death,
    but to his servants he will give another name.^(AU)
¹⁶Whoever invokes a blessing^(AV) in the land
    will do so by the one true God;^(AW)
whoever takes an oath in the land
    will swear^(AX) by the one true God.
For the past troubles^(AY) will be forgotten
    and hidden from my eyes.

New Heavens and a New Earth

¹⁷“See, I will create
    new heavens and a new earth.^(AZ)
The former things will not be remembered,^(BA)
    nor will they come to mind.
¹⁸But be glad and rejoice^(BB) forever
    in what I will create,
for I will create Jerusalem^(BC) to be a delight
    and its people a joy.
¹⁹I will rejoice^(BD) over Jerusalem
    and take delight^(BE) in my people;
the sound of weeping and of crying^(BF)
    will be heard in it no more.

²⁰“Never again will there be in it
    an infant^(BG) who lives but a few days,
    or an old man who does not live out his years;^(BH)
the one who dies at a hundred
    will be thought a mere child;
the one who fails to reach^[a] a hundred
    will be considered accursed.
²¹They will build houses^(BI) and dwell in them;
    they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.^(BJ)
²²No longer will they build houses and others live in them,^(BK)
    or plant and others eat.
For as the days of a tree,^(BL)
    so will be the days^(BM) of my people;
my chosen^(BN) ones will long enjoy
    the work of their hands.
²³They will not labor in vain,^(BO)
    nor will they bear children doomed to misfortune;^(BP)
for they will be a people blessed^(BQ) by the Lord,
    they and their descendants^(BR) with them.
²⁴Before they call^(BS) I will answer;^(BT)
    while they are still speaking^(BU) I will hear.
²⁵The wolf and the lamb^(BV) will feed together,
    and the lion will eat straw like the ox,^(BW)
    and dust will be the serpent’s^(BX) food.
They will neither harm nor destroy
    on all my holy mountain,”^(BY)
says the Lord.
