Water from the Rock

17 ^(A)All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. ^2 (B)Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you ^(C)test the Lord?” ³ But the people thirsted there for water, and ^(D)the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” ⁴ So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready ^(E)to stone me.” ⁵ And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with ^(F)which you struck the Nile, and go. ^6 (G)Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. ⁷ And he called the name of the place ^(H)Massah^[a] and ^(I)Meribah,^[b] because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, ^(A)we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. ⁹ But we see him ^(B)who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, ^(C)crowned with glory and honor ^(D)because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might ^(E)taste death ^(F)for everyone.

¹⁰ For it ^(G)was fitting that he, ^(H)for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons ^(I)to glory, should make the ^(J)founder of their salvation ^(K)perfect through suffering. ¹¹ For ^(L)he who sanctifies and ^(M)those who are sanctified ^(N)all have one source.^[b] That is why he is not ashamed to call them ^(O)brothers,^{[c] 12} saying,

¹⁴ Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise ^(U)partook of the same things, that ^(V)through death he might ^(W)destroy ^(X)the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, ¹⁵ and deliver all those who ^(Y)through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. ¹⁶ For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he ^(Z)helps the offspring of Abraham. ¹⁷ Therefore he had ^(AA)to be made like his brothers in every respect, ^(AB)so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest ^(AC)in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. ¹⁸ For because he himself has suffered ^(AD)when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
