Water From the Rock

17 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin,^(A) traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim,^(B) but there was no water^(C) for the people to drink. ²So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water^(D) to drink.”^(E)

Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”^(F)

³But the people were thirsty^(G) for water there, and they grumbled^(H) against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die^(I) of thirst?”

⁴Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone^(J) me.”

⁵The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff^(K) with which you struck the Nile,^(L) and go. ⁶I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.^(M) Strike^(N) the rock, and water^(O) will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. ⁷And he called the place Massah^[a]^(P) and Meribah^[b]^(Q) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

The Amalekites Defeated

⁸The Amalekites^(R) came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.^(S) ⁹Moses said to Joshua,^(T) “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff^(U) of God in my hands.”

¹⁰So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur^(V) went to the top of the hill. ¹¹As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning,^(W) but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. ¹²When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.^(X) ¹³So Joshua overcame the Amalekite^(Y) army with the sword.

¹⁴Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write^(Z) this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out^(AA) the name of Amalek^(AB) from under heaven.”

¹⁵Moses built an altar^(AC) and called^(AD) it The Lord is my Banner. ¹⁶He said, “Because hands were lifted up against^[c] the throne of the Lord,^[d] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites^(AE) from generation to generation.”^(AF)

Job 35

35 Then Elihu said:

²“Do you think this is just?
You say, ‘I am in the right,^(A) not God.’^(B)
³Yet you ask him, ‘What profit is it to me,^[a]
and what do I gain by not sinning?’^(C)

⁴“I would like to reply to you
    and to your friends with you.
⁵Look up at the heavens^(D) and see;
    gaze at the clouds so high above you.^(E)
⁶If you sin, how does that affect him?
    If your sins are many, what does that do to him?^(F)
⁷If you are righteous, what do you give to him,^(G)
    or what does he receive^(H) from your hand?^(I)
⁸Your wickedness only affects humans like yourself,^(J)
    and your righteousness only other people.^(K)

⁹“People cry out^(L) under a load of oppression;^(M)
    they plead for relief from the arm of the powerful.^(N)
¹⁰But no one says, ‘Where is God my Maker,^(O)
    who gives songs^(P) in the night,^(Q)
¹¹who teaches^(R) us^(S) more than he teaches^[b] the beasts of the earth
    and makes us wiser than^[c] the birds in the sky?’
¹²He does not answer^(T) when people cry out
    because of the arrogance^(U) of the wicked.^(V)
¹³Indeed, God does not listen to their empty plea;
    the Almighty pays no attention to it.^(W)
¹⁴How much less, then, will he listen
    when you say that you do not see him,^(X)
that your case^(Y) is before him
    and you must wait for him,^(Z)
¹⁵and further, that his anger never punishes^(AA)
    and he does not take the least notice of wickedness.^[d]^(AB)
¹⁶So Job opens his mouth with empty talk;^(AC)
    without knowledge he multiplies words.”^(AD)

¹Praise awaits^[b] you, our God, in Zion;^(A)
    to you our vows will be fulfilled.^(B)
²You who answer prayer,
    to you all people will come.^(C)
³When we were overwhelmed by sins,^(D)
    you forgave^[c] our transgressions.^(E)
⁴Blessed are those you choose^(F)
    and bring near^(G) to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,^(H)
    of your holy temple.

⁵You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,^(I)
    God our Savior,^(J)
the hope of all the ends of the earth^(K)
    and of the farthest seas,^(L)
⁶who formed the mountains^(M) by your power,
    having armed yourself with strength,^(N)
⁷who stilled the roaring of the seas,^(O)
    the roaring of their waves,
    and the turmoil of the nations.^(P)
⁸The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
    where morning dawns, where evening fades,
    you call forth songs of joy.^(Q)

⁹You care for the land and water it;^(R)
    you enrich it abundantly.^(S)
The streams of God are filled with water
    to provide the people with grain,^(T)
    for so you have ordained it.^[d]
¹⁰You drench its furrows and level its ridges;
    you soften it with showers^(U) and bless its crops.
¹¹You crown the year with your bounty,^(V)
    and your carts overflow with abundance.^(W)
¹²The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;^(X)
