¹³ That evening quail^(A) came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew^(B) around the camp. ¹⁴ When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost^(C) on the ground appeared on the desert floor. ¹⁵ When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know^(D) what it was.

Moses said to them, “It is the bread^(E) the Lord has given you to eat. ¹⁶ This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer^[a](F) for each person you have in your tent.’”

¹⁷ The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. ¹⁸ And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.^(G) Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.

¹⁹ Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.”^(H)

²⁰ However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell.^(I) So Moses was angry^(J) with them.

²¹ Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away. ²² On the sixth day, they gathered twice^(K) as much—two omers^[b] for each person—and the leaders of the community^(L) came and reported this to Moses. ²³ He said to them, “This is what the Lord commanded: ‘Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath^(M) to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.’”

²⁴ So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it. ²⁵ “Eat it today,” Moses said, “because today is a sabbath to the Lord. You will not find any of it on the ground today. ²⁶ Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath,^(N) there will not be any.”

¹⁰ The people of Judah asked, “Why have you come to fight us?”

“We have come to take Samson prisoner,” they answered, “to do to him as he did to us.”

¹¹ Then three thousand men from Judah went down to the cave in the rock of Etam and said to Samson, “Don’t you realize that the Philistines are rulers over us?^(A) What have you done to us?”

He answered, “I merely did to them what they did to me.”

¹² They said to him, “We’ve come to tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines.”

Samson said, “Swear to me^(B) that you won’t kill me yourselves.”

¹³ “Agreed,” they answered. “We will only tie you up and hand you over to them. We will not kill you.” So they bound him with two new ropes^(C) and led him up from the rock. ¹⁴ As he approached Lehi,^(D) the Philistines came toward him shouting. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.^(E) The ropes on his arms became like charred flax,^(F) and the bindings dropped from his hands. ¹⁵ Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men.^(G)

¹⁶ Then Samson said,

¹⁷ When he finished speaking, he threw away the jawbone; and the place was called Ramath Lehi.^[b](I)

¹⁸ Because he was very thirsty, he cried out to the Lord,^(J) “You have given your servant this great victory.^(K) Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” ¹⁹ Then God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When Samson drank, his strength returned and he revived.^(L) So the spring^(M) was called En Hakkore,^[c] and it is still there in Lehi.

²⁰ Samson led^[d] Israel for twenty years^(N) in the days of the Philistines.

³ Elijah was afraid^[a] and ran^(A) for his life.^(B) When he came to Beersheba^(C) in Judah, he left his servant there, ⁴ while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush,^(D) sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life;^(E) I am no better than my ancestors.” ⁵ Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.^(F)

All at once an angel^(G) touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” ⁶ He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

⁷ The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”

⁷ Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb^(A) for the burnt offering?”

⁸ Abraham answered, “God himself will provide^(B) the lamb^(C) for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

⁹ When they reached the place God had told him about,^(D) Abraham built an altar^(E) there and arranged the wood^(F) on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar,^(G) on top of the wood. ¹⁰ Then he reached out his hand and took the knife^(H) to slay his son.^{(I) 11} But the angel of the Lord^(J) called out to him from heaven,^(K) “Abraham! Abraham!”^(L)

“Here I am,”^(M) he replied.

¹² “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God,^(N) because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.^(O)”

¹³ Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram^[a] caught by its horns.^(P) He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.^{(Q) 14} So Abraham called^(R) that place The Lord^(S) Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.^(T)”

¹⁵ The angel of the Lord^(U) called to Abraham from heaven^(V) a second time ¹⁶ and said, “I swear by myself,^(W) declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,^{(X) 17} I will surely bless you^(Y) and make your descendants^(Z) as numerous as the stars in the sky^(AA) and as the sand on the seashore.^(AB) Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,^{(AC) 18} and through your offspring^[b] all nations on earth will be blessed,^[c](AD) because you have obeyed me.”^(AE)

¹⁸ I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus^(A) the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant^(B) offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. ¹⁹ And my God will meet all your needs^(C) according to the riches of his glory^(D) in Christ Jesus.

²⁰ To our God and Father^(E) be glory for ever and ever. Amen.^(F)
