The Song of Moses

15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:

“I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
    horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.(A)
The Lord is my strength and my might,[a]
    and he has become my salvation;
this is my God, and I will praise him;
    my father’s God, and I will exalt him.(B)
The Lord is a warrior;
    the Lord is his name.(C)

Pharaoh’s chariots and his army he cast into the sea;
    his elite officers were sunk in the Red Sea.[b](D)
The floods covered them;
    they went down into the depths like a stone.(E)
Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power—
    your right hand, O Lord, shattered the enemy.(F)
In the greatness of your majesty you overthrew your adversaries;
    you sent out your fury; it consumed them like stubble.(G)
At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up;
    the floods stood up in a heap;
    the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea.(H)
The enemy said, ‘I will pursue; I will overtake;
    I will divide the spoil; my desire shall have its fill of them.
    I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.’(I)
10 You blew with your wind; the sea covered them;
    they sank like lead in the mighty waters.(J)

11 Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods?
    Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
    awesome in splendor, doing wonders?(K)
12 You stretched out your right hand;
    the earth swallowed them.

13 In your steadfast love you led the people whom you redeemed;
    you guided them by your strength to your holy abode.(L)
14 The peoples heard; they trembled;
    pangs seized the inhabitants of Philistia.(M)
15 Then the chiefs of Edom were dismayed;
    trembling seized the leaders of Moab;
    all the inhabitants of Canaan melted away.(N)
16 Terror and dread fell upon them;
    by the might of your arm, they became still as a stone
until your people, O Lord, passed by,
    until the people whom you acquired passed by.(O)
17 You brought them in and planted them on the mountain of your own possession,
    the place, O Lord, that you made your abode,
    the sanctuary, O Lord, that your hands have established.(P)
18 The Lord will reign forever and ever.”(Q)

19 When the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his chariot drivers went into the sea, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground.(R)

The Song of Miriam

20 Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing.(S) 21 And Miriam sang to them:

“Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.”(T)

Bitter Water Made Sweet

22 Then Moses ordered Israel to set out from the Red Sea,[c] and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water.(U) 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter. That is why it was called Marah.[d](V) 24 And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”(W) 25 He cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood; he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.

There the Lord[e] made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he put them to the test.(X) 26 He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in his sight, and give heed to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will not bring upon you any of the diseases that I brought upon the Egyptians, for I am the Lord who heals you.”(Y)

27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there by the water.(Z)

Bread from Heaven

16 The whole congregation of the Israelites set out from Elim and came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt.(AA) The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.(AB) The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and ate our fill of bread, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”(AC)

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not.(AD) On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather on other days.”(AE) So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your complaining against the Lord. For what are we, that you complain against us?”(AF) And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening and your fill of bread in the morning, because the Lord has heard the complaining that you utter against him—what are we? Your complaining is not against us but against the Lord.”

Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites: ‘Draw near to the Lord, for he has heard your complaining.’ ”(AG) 10 And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.(AH) 11 The Lord spoke to Moses, 12 “I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’ ”

13 In the evening quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.(AI) 14 When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground.(AJ) 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?”[f] For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.(AK) 16 This is what the Lord has commanded: Gather as much of it as each of you needs, an omer per person according to the number of persons, all providing for those in their own tents.” 17 The Israelites did so, some gathering more, some less. 18 But when they measured it with an omer, those who gathered much had nothing over, and those who gathered little had no shortage; they gathered as much as each of them needed.(AL) 19 And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over until morning.”(AM) 20 But they did not listen to Moses; some left part of it until morning, and it became wormy and rotten. And Moses was angry with them. 21 Morning by morning they gathered it, as much as each needed, but when the sun grew hot, it melted.

22 On the sixth day they gathered twice as much food, two omers apiece. When all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses,(AN) 23 he said to them, “This is what the Lord has commanded: Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord; bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil, and all that is left over put aside to be kept until morning.”(AO) 24 So they put it aside until morning, just as Moses commanded them, and it did not rot, and there were no maggots in it.(AP) 25 Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. 26 Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none.”

27 On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, and they found none. 28 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and instructions?(AQ) 29 See! The Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you food for two days; each of you stay where you are; do not leave your place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

31 The Israelites called it manna; it was like white coriander seed, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.(AR) 32 Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded: Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations in order that they may see the food with which I fed you in the wilderness when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.” 33 And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the Lord, to be kept throughout your generations.”(AS) 34 Just as the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the covenant, for safekeeping.(AT) 35 The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a habitable land; they ate manna, until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.(AU) 36 (An omer is a tenth of an ephah.)

11 A false balance is an abomination to the Lord,
    but an accurate weight is his delight.(A)
When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
    but wisdom is with the humble.(B)
The integrity of the upright guides them,
    but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.(C)
Riches do not profit in the day of wrath,
    but righteousness delivers from death.(D)
The righteousness of the blameless keeps their ways straight,
    but the wicked fall by their own wickedness.
The righteousness of the upright saves them,
    but the treacherous are taken captive by their schemes.(E)
When the wicked die, hope perishes,
    and the expectation of strength comes to nothing.(F)
The righteous are delivered from trouble,
    and the wicked come into it instead.(G)
With their mouths the godless would destroy their neighbors,
    but by knowledge the righteous are delivered.
10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices,
    and when the wicked perish, there is jubilation.(H)
11 By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,
    but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.(I)
12 Whoever belittles another lacks sense,
    but an intelligent person remains silent.(J)
13 A gossip goes about telling secrets,
    but one who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a confidence.(K)
14 Where there is no guidance, a nation[a] falls,
    but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.(L)
15 To guarantee loans for a stranger brings trouble,
    but there is safety in refusing to do so.
16 A gracious woman gets honor,
    but she who hates virtue is covered with shame.[b]
The timid become destitute,[c]
    but the aggressive gain riches.(M)
17 Those who are kind reward themselves,
    but the cruel do themselves harm.
18 The wicked earn no real gain,
    but those who sow righteousness get a true reward.(N)
19 Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live,
    but whoever pursues evil will die.
20 Crooked minds are an abomination to the Lord,
    but those of blameless ways are his delight.(O)
21 Be assured, the wicked will not go unpunished,
    but those who are righteous will escape.(P)
22 Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout
    is a beautiful woman without good sense.
23 The desire of the righteous ends only in good,
    the expectation of the wicked in wrath.
24 Some give freely yet grow all the richer;
    others withhold what is due and only suffer want.(Q)
25 A generous person will be enriched,
    and one who gives water will get water.(R)
26 The people curse those who hold back grain,
    but a blessing is on the head of those who sell it.(S)
27 Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favor,
    but evil comes to the one who searches for it.(T)
28 Those who trust in their riches will wither,[d]
    but the righteous will flourish like green leaves.(U)
29 Those who trouble their households will inherit wind,
    and the fool will be servant to the wise.
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
    and the wise capture souls.(V)
31 If the righteous are repaid on earth,
    how much more the wicked and the sinner!(W)

The Laborers in the Vineyard

20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.(A) After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around, and he said to them, ‘Why are you standing here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.’(B) When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received a denarius. 10 Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. 11 And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’(C) 13 But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius?(D) 14 Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’[a](E) 16 So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”[b](F)

A Third Time Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

17 While Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside by themselves and said to them on the way, 18 “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death;(G) 19 then they will hand him over to the gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised.”(H)

The Request of the Mother of James and John

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him.(I) 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.”(J) 22 But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?”[c] They said to him, “We are able.”(K) 23 He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”(L)

24 When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers.(M) 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them.(N) 26 It will not be so among you, but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant,(O) 27 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave, 28 just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.”(P)

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

29 As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. 30 There were two blind men sitting by the roadside. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, “Lord,[d] have mercy on us, Son of David!”(Q) 31 The crowd sternly ordered them to be quiet, but they shouted even more loudly, “Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!” 32 Jesus stood still and called them, saying, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” 34 Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him.
