²⁵ Then Moses cried out^(A) to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw^(B) it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.

There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.^(C)

² Remember how the Lord your God led^(A) you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test^(B) you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

⁴ They were left to test^(A) the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.

²² I will use them to test^(A) Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their ancestors did.”

3 These are the nations the Lord left to test^(A) all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan

¹⁶ He gave you manna^(A) to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known,^(B) to humble and test^(C) you so that in the end it might go well with you.

⁴ Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven^(A) for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test^(B) them and see whether they will follow my instructions.

²¹ Then he went out to the spring and threw^(A) the salt into it, saying, “This is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’”

¹⁰ As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried^(A) out to the Lord.
