14 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol(A) and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon.(B) 3 Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.’ 4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart,(C) and he will pursue them.(D) But I will gain glory(E) for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.”(F) So the Israelites did this.
5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled,(G) Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds(H) about them and said, “What have we done? We have let the Israelites go and have lost their services!” 6 So he had his chariot made ready and took his army with him. 7 He took six hundred of the best chariots,(I) along with all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them. 8 The Lord hardened the heart(J) of Pharaoh king of Egypt, so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly.(K) 9 The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses(L) and chariots, horsemen[a] and troops(M)—pursued the Israelites and overtook(N) them as they camped by the sea near Pi Hahiroth, opposite Baal Zephon.(O)
10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried(P) out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?(Q) What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”(R)
13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid.(S) Stand firm and you will see(T) the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see(U) again. 14 The Lord will fight(V) for you; you need only to be still.”(W)
15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me?(X) Tell the Israelites to move on. 16 Raise your staff(Y) and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water(Z) so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. 17 I will harden the hearts(AA) of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them.(AB) And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord(AC) when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”
19 Then the angel of God,(AD) who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud(AE) also moved from in front and stood behind(AF) them, 20 coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness(AG) to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long.
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand(AH) over the sea,(AI) and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind(AJ) and turned it into dry land.(AK) The waters were divided,(AL) 22 and the Israelites went through the sea(AM) on dry ground,(AN) with a wall(AO) of water on their right and on their left.
23 The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and horsemen(AP) followed them into the sea. 24 During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud(AQ) at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion.(AR) 25 He jammed[b] the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting(AS) for them against Egypt.”(AT)
26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” 27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place.(AU) The Egyptians were fleeing toward[c] it, and the Lord swept them into the sea.(AV) 28 The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea.(AW) Not one of them survived.(AX)
29 But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground,(AY) with a wall(AZ) of water on their right and on their left. 30 That day the Lord saved(BA) Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. 31 And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand(BB) of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared(BC) the Lord and put their trust(BD) in him and in Moses his servant.

14 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea.
3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.
4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the Lord. And they did so.
5 And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?
6 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him:
7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.
8 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand.
9 But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon.
10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord.
11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?
12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.
13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
14 The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
15 And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:
16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.
17 And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.
18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.
19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:
20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.
21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.
22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.
24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the Lord looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,
25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the Lord fighteth for them against the Egyptians.
26 And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.
27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.
29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
30 Thus the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.
31 And Israel saw that great work which the Lord did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord, and his servant Moses.

14 Herren sade till Mose: 2 "Säg till Israels barn att de vänder om och slår läger framför Pi-Hahirot, mellan Migdol och havet. Mitt emot Baal-Sefon skall ni slå läger vid havet. 3 Farao kommer att säga att Israels barn har gått vilse i landet och blivit instängda i öknen. 4 Och jag skall göra faraos hjärta hårt så att han förföljer dem. Jag skall förhärliga mig på farao och hela hans här, så att egyptierna förstår att jag är Herren." Och de gjorde så.
5 När man berättade för kungen i Egypten att folket hade flytt, förändrades faraos och hans tjänares inställning till folket, och de sade: "Vad var det vi gjorde när vi släppte israeliterna, så att de inte tjänar oss mer!" 6 Och han lät spänna för sina vagnar och tog sitt folk med sig. 7 Han tog sexhundra utvalda vagnar och alla andra vagnar som fanns i Egypten och ledande krigsmän på var och en av dem. 8 Och Herren gjorde faraos, den egyptiske kungens, hjärta hårt så att han förföljde Israel när hela folket drog ut med upplyft hand. 9 Egyptierna, alla faraos hästar, vagnar och ryttare och hela hans här, förföljde dem och hann upp dem där de slagit läger vid havet nära Pi-Hahirot, mitt emot Baal-Sefon.
10 När farao närmade sig, lyfte Israels barn blicken och fick se att egyptierna kom tågande efter dem. Israels barn blev mycket förskräckta och ropade till Herren. 11 Och de sade till Mose: "Fanns det inga gravar i Egypten, eftersom du har fört oss hit för att dö i öknen? Vad var det du gjorde mot oss, när du förde oss ut ur Egypten? 12 Var det inte det vi sade till dig i Egypten? Vi sade ju: Låt oss vara, så att vi får tjäna egyptierna. Det hade varit bättre för oss att tjäna egyptierna än att dö här i öknen." 13 Mose svarade folket: "Var inte rädda! Stanna upp och bevittna den frälsning som Herren i dag skall ge er. Ty så som ni ser egyptierna i dag, skall ni aldrig någonsin se dem igen. 14 Herren skall strida för er, och ni skall hålla er stilla."
15 Sedan sade Herren till Mose: "Varför ropar du till mig? Säg till Israels barn att de skall dra vidare. 16 Lyft din stav och räck ut handen över havet och klyv det, så att Israels barn kan gå mitt igenom havet på torr mark. 17 Se, jag skall förhärda egyptiernas hjärtan, så att de följer efter dem, och jag skall förhärliga mig på farao och hela hans här, på hans vagnar och ryttare. 18 Egyptierna skall inse att jag är Herren, när jag förhärligar mig på farao, på hans vagnar och ryttare."
19 Guds ängel, som hade gått framför Israels här, flyttade sig nu och gick bakom dem. Molnstoden, som hade gått framför dem, flyttade sig och tog plats bakom dem, 20 så att den kom mellan egyptiernas här och israeliternas. Molnet var där med mörker, samtidigt som det lyste upp natten. Under hela natten kunde den ena hären inte komma inpå den andra.
21 Och Mose räckte ut handen över havet, och Herren drev då undan havet genom en stark östanvind som blåste hela natten. Han gjorde havet till torrt land, och vattnet klövs itu. 22 Israels barn gick mitt igenom havet på torr mark, medan vattnet stod som en mur till höger och vänster om dem. 23 Och egyptierna förföljde dem, alla faraos hästar, vagnar och ryttare, och kom efter dem ut till mitten av havet. 24 Men när morgonväkten var inne, såg Herren från pelaren av eld och moln ner på egyptiernas här och förvirrade den. 25 Han lät hjulen falla av deras vagnar, så att det blev svårt för dem att komma fram. Då sade egyptierna: "Låt oss fly för Israel, ty Herren strider för dem mot egyptierna."
26 Och Herren sade till Mose: "Räck ut handen över havet, så att vattnet vänder tillbaka över egyptierna, över deras vagnar och ryttare." 27 Då räckte Mose ut handen över havet, och mot morgonen vände vattnet tillbaka till sin vanliga plats. Egyptierna flydde men möttes av det, och Herren strödde omkring dem mitt i havet. 28 Vattnet som vände tillbaka övertäckte vagnarna och ryttarna och hela faraos här som hade kommit efter dem ut i havet. Inte en enda av dem kom undan.
29 Men Israels barn gick mitt igenom havet på torr mark, och vattnet stod som en mur till höger och till vänster om dem. 30 På detta sätt frälste Herren den dagen Israel från egyptiernas hand, och Israel såg egyptierna ligga döda på havets strand. 31 När Israels barn såg den stora makt som Herren hade visat mot egyptierna, fruktade folket Herren. Och de trodde på Herren och på hans tjänare Mose.

De achtervolging van het volk
14 De Here gaf Mozes opnieuw een opdracht: 2 ‘Zeg tegen de Israëlieten dat zij moeten terugkeren naar Pi-Hachirot tussen Migdol en de zee, tegenover Baäl-Sefon en daar blijven. 3 De farao zal dan denken: “Ha, nu zitten ze in de val tussen de woestijn en de zee”. 4 Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat de farao opnieuw hardnekkig blijft weigeren, zodat hij de achtervolging zal inzetten. Dan kan Ik grote eer en glorie behalen door de farao en zijn legers ten val te brengen. Zij zullen merken dat Ik God, de Here, ben!’ De Israëlieten sloegen dus hun kamp op waar God had gezegd. 5 Toen de farao hoorde dat de Israëlieten waren gevlucht en helemaal niet van plan waren na drie dagen te stoppen, draaiden hij en zijn dienaren om als een blad aan de boom en zeiden: ‘Wat hebben we gedaan? We hadden die slaven nooit moeten laten gaan!’ 6 De farao liet zijn rijtuig inspannen en zette de achtervolging in 7 aan het hoofd van zijn zeshonderd beste strijdwagens met hun volledige gevechtsbemanning. 8 Weer zorgde de Here ervoor dat de farao bleef weigeren de Israëlieten te laten gaan en achter hen aanging. Die trokken ondertussen gewoon verder, door de Here geleid.
9 Het Egyptische leger, met de voltallige cavalerie erbij, haalde de Israëlieten in toen die aan de zee bij Pi-Hachirot hun kamp hadden opgeslagen. 10 Toen de Israëlieten het enorme leger dat hen achtervolgde in de gaten kregen, brak grote paniek uit. 11 Zij schreeuwden naar de Here om hulp en riepen Mozes toe: ‘Waren er niet genoeg graven in Egypte dat u ons hier naar de woestijn hebt gebracht om te sterven? Waarom hebt u ons uit Egypte weggeleid? 12 Wij hebben het u toch al gezegd toen wij nog slaven waren: “Laat ons met rust, we kunnen beter slaven zijn dan in de woestijn sterven.” ’
13 Maar Mozes kalmeerde het volk. ‘Wees maar niet bang. Blijf gewoon waar u bent en kijk hoe de Here ons vandaag redt. De Egyptenaren die daar aankomen, zult u nooit meer zien! 14 De Here zal voor u vechten, u hoeft zelfs geen vinger naar hen uit te steken!’
15 Toen zei de Here tegen Mozes: ‘Roep niet langer tot Mij, breek het kamp op en zet het volk in beweging! 16 Strek uw staf uit boven het water en de zee zal zich splitsen, zodat u er doorheen kunt trekken. 17 Ik zal de harten van de Egyptenaren verharden zodat zij u achterna gaan en dan zal Ik mijn eer behalen door de farao, zijn strijdwagens en zijn ruiters ten val te brengen. 18 De Egyptenaren zullen erkennen dat Ik de Here ben wanneer Ik mijn macht heb laten zien aan de farao, zijn strijdwagens en ruiters.’
19 Toen verliet de Engel van God zijn plaats aan het hoofd van het volk en stelde Zich achter de Israëlieten op, de wolk ging met Hem mee. 20 Zo kwam de wolk tussen de Israëlieten en het Egyptische leger te staan. Deze zorgde aan de Egyptische kant voor een diepe duisternis, maar verschafte de Israëlieten tegelijkertijd licht, zodat zij verder konden trekken. Zo kregen de Egyptenaren geen kans de Israëlieten te naderen!
21 Toen strekte Mozes zijn arm uit over de zee en de Here liet een krachtige wind uit het oosten waaien, zodat het water wegvloeide en de bodem droog kwam te staan. 22 Er ontstond een pad waarover de Israëlieten door de zee trokken. Links en rechts van hen rees het water op als een muur.
23 De Egyptenaren aarzelden niet en volgden het volk op het pad door de zee. Alle wagens en ruiters waagden zich tussen de watermassaʼs. 24 Maar in de vroege ochtend keek de Here op de Egyptische legermacht neer vanuit de wolk en bracht hen in verwarring. 25 De wielen van de strijdwagens gleden weg en de achtervolgers kwamen slechts langzaam vooruit. ‘Laten we maken dat we wegkomen,’ riepen de Egyptenaren, ‘de Here vecht voor hen en tegen ons!’
26 Toen zei de Here tegen Mozes: ‘Strek uw arm uit over de zee, zodat het water terugstroomt over de Egyptenaren en hun strijdwagens en ruiters.’ 27 Mozes strekte zijn arm uit en bij het aanbreken van de morgen stroomde het water weer terug in zijn normale bedding. De Egyptenaren probeerden te ontvluchten maar verdronken jammerlijk, allemaal. 28 Het water bedekte het pad en de strijdwagens en ruiters. Niemand van het Egyptische leger overleefde het.
29 Maar het volk Israël was over een droog pad tussen de watermassaʼs door getrokken. 30 Zo redde de Here die dag zijn volk uit de macht van de Egyptenaren. De Israëlieten zagen de levenloze lichamen die aangespoeld waren. 31 Toen besefte het volk wat een groot wonder er was gebeurd. Allen hadden diep ontzag voor de Here en geloofden in Hem en in zijn dienaar Mozes.
