13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “(A)Sanctify to Me every firstborn, the firstborn of every womb among the sons of Israel, among people and animals alike; it belongs to Me.”

3 And Moses said to the people, “(B)Remember this day in which you departed from Egypt, from the house of [a]slavery; for (C)by [b]a powerful hand the Lord brought you out from this place. (D)And nothing with yeast shall be eaten. 4 On this day in the (E)month of Abib, you are about to go out from here. 5 And it shall be when the Lord (F)brings you to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which (G)He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, (H)that you shall [c]perform this rite in this month. 6 For (I)seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; and (J)nothing with yeast shall [d]be seen among you, nor shall any dough with yeast [e]be seen among you in all your borders. 8 And (K)you shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‘It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 And (L)it shall [f]serve as a sign to you on your hand, and as a reminder [g]on your forehead, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth; for with (M)a powerful hand the Lord brought you out of Egypt. 10 Therefore, you shall (N)keep this ordinance at its appointed time from [h]year to year.

11 “Now when (O)the Lord brings you to the land of the Canaanite, as (P)He swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 (Q)you shall [i]devote to the Lord every firstborn of a womb, and every firstborn offspring of an animal that you own; the males belong to the Lord. 13 But (R)every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and (S)every [j]firstborn among your sons you shall redeem. 14 (T)And it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ then you shall say to him, ‘(U)With [k]a powerful hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of [l]slavery. 15 And it came about, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that the (V)Lord put to death every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from human firstborns to animal firstborns. Therefore, I sacrifice to the Lord the males, every firstborn of a womb, but every firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 So (W)it shall [m]serve as a sign on your hand and as [n]phylacteries [o]on your forehead, for with [p]a powerful hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”

God Leads the People

17 Now when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, “(X)The people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 Therefore God led the people around by way of the wilderness to the [q]Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up (Y)in battle formation from the land of Egypt. 19 And Moses took (Z)the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, “God will certainly [r]take care of you, and you shall carry my bones from here with you.” 20 Then they set out from (AA)Succoth and camped in Etham, on the edge of the wilderness. 21 And (AB)the Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, so that they might [s]travel by day and by night. 22 [t]He (AC)did not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from the presence of the people.

Det förstfödda helgas åt Herren

13 Herren sade till Mose: 2 (A) ”Helga allt förstfött åt mig. Allt hos Israels barn som öppnar moderlivet, både av människor och boskap, tillhör mig.”[a]

3 Mose sade till folket: ”Kom ihåg den här dagen då ni drog ut ur Egypten, ur träldomshuset. Med stark hand förde Herren ut er därifrån, och därför får inget syrat ätas. 4 Den här dagen i månaden Aviv[b] drar ni ut. 5 (B) Och när Herren låter dig komma in i kananeernas, hetiternas, amoreernas, hiveernas och jebusiternas land som han med ed har lovat dina fäder att ge dig, ett land som flödar av mjölk och honung, då ska du fira denna gudstjänst i den här månaden. 6 (C) I sju dagar ska du äta osyrat bröd, och på sjunde dagen ska en Herrens högtid firas. 7 Under de sju dagarna ska man äta osyrat bröd. Inget syrat ska man då se hos dig, och det får inte finnas surdeg hos dig någonstans i landet.

8 (D) På den dagen ska du förklara för din son: Detta gör jag på grund av det som Herren gjorde för mig när jag drog ut ur Egypten. 9 (E) Det ska vara som ett tecken för dig på din hand och som en påminnelse på din panna[c], att Herrens undervisning ska vara i din mun, för med stark hand har Herren fört dig ut ur Egypten. 10 Denna stadga ska du hålla på den bestämda tiden år efter år.

11 När Herren låter dig komma in och ger dig kananeernas land, som han med ed har lovat dig och dina fäder, 12 (F) då ska du överlämna till Herren allt som öppnar moderlivet. Allt förstfött av hankön bland din boskap ska tillhöra Herren. 13 Men allt som öppnar moderlivet bland åsnor ska du lösa ut med ett får, och om du inte vill lösa det ska du krossa nacken på det. Varje förstfödd son ska du lösa ut.

14 När din son i framtiden frågar dig vad det betyder, ska du svara honom: Med stark hand förde Herren oss ut ur Egypten, ur träldomshuset. 15 Eftersom farao envist vägrade släppa oss, dödade Herren allt förstfött i Egyptens land, från det förstfödda bland människor till det förstfödda bland boskap. Därför offrar jag åt Herren allt av hankön som öppnar moderlivet, och varje förstfödd son löser jag ut.

16 Detta ska vara som ett tecken på din hand och en påminnelse på din panna, eftersom Herren med stark hand förde oss ut ur Egypten.”

Molnpelaren och eldpelaren

17 När farao hade släppt folket förde Gud dem inte genom filisteernas land[d], fast det var den närmaste vägen. Gud tänkte nämligen att folket kunde ångra sig och vända tillbaka till Egypten när de fick se krig hota. 18 Därför lät han folket ta en omväg genom öknen[e] mot Röda havet[f]. Israels barn drog ut ur Egypten i ordnade grupper.[g] 19 (G) Och Mose tog med sig Josefs ben, för Josef hade tagit en ed av Israels barn och sagt: ”När Gud ser till er, ta då med mina ben härifrån.”

20 (H) De bröt upp från Suckot[h] och slog läger i Etam vid utkanten av öknen. 21 (I) Herren gick framför dem, om dagen i en molnpelare för att visa dem vägen och om natten i en eldpelare[i] för att ge dem ljus. På så sätt kunde de vandra både dag och natt. 22 Molnpelaren upphörde inte att gå framför folket på dagen och inte heller eldpelaren på natten.

Consecration of the Firstborn

13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Consecrate to me every firstborn male.(A) The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.”

3 Then Moses said to the people, “Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt,(B) out of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand.(C) Eat nothing containing yeast.(D) 4 Today, in the month of Aviv,(E) you are leaving. 5 When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites,(F) Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites(G)—the land he swore to your ancestors to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey(H)—you are to observe this ceremony(I) in this month: 6 For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival(J) to the Lord. 7 Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders. 8 On that day tell your son,(K) ‘I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand(L) and a reminder on your forehead(M) that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.(N) 10 You must keep this ordinance(O) at the appointed time(P) year after year.

11 “After the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites(Q) and gives it to you, as he promised on oath(R) to you and your ancestors,(S) 12 you are to give over to the Lord the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the Lord.(T) 13 Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey,(U) but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.(V) Redeem(W) every firstborn among your sons.(X)

14 “In days to come, when your son(Y) asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.(Z) 15 When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.’(AA) 16 And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead(AB) that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.”

Crossing the Sea

17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”(AC) 18 So God led(AD) the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea.[a] The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.(AE)

19 Moses took the bones of Joseph(AF) with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”[b](AG)

20 After leaving Sukkoth(AH) they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.(AI) 21 By day the Lord went ahead(AJ) of them in a pillar of cloud(AK) to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left(AL) its place in front of the people.
