God Leads the People

17 Now when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, “(A)The people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 Hence God led the people around by the way of the wilderness to the [a]Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up (B)in martial array from the land of Egypt. 19 Moses took (C)the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, “God will surely [b]take care of you, and you shall carry my bones from here with you.” 20 Then they set out from (D)Succoth and camped in Etham on the edge of the wilderness. 21 (E)The Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might [c]travel by day and by night. 22 [d]He (F)did not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

Pharaoh in Pursuit

14 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Tell the sons of Israel to turn back and camp before (G)Pi-hahiroth, between (H)Migdol and the sea; you shall camp in front of Baal-zephon, opposite it, by the sea. 3 For Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, ‘They are wandering aimlessly in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.’ 4 Thus (I)I will [e]harden Pharaoh’s heart, and (J)he will chase after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, and (K)the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” And they did so.

5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, [f]Pharaoh and his servants had a change of heart toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?” 6 So he made his chariot ready and took his people with him; 7 and he took six hundred select chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. 8 (L)The Lord [g]hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he chased after the sons of Israel as the sons of Israel were going out [h](M)boldly. 9 Then (N)the Egyptians chased after them with all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and they overtook them camping by the sea, (O)beside Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.

10 As Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel [i]looked, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they became very frightened; (P)so the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord. 11 Then (Q)they said to Moses, “Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, [j]bringing us out of Egypt? 12 (R)Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘[k]Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

The Sea Is Divided

13 But Moses said to the people, “(S)Do not fear! [l]Stand by and see (T)the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. 14 (U)The Lord will fight for you while (V)you keep silent.”

15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward. 16 As for you, lift up (W)your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and the sons of Israel shall [m]go through the midst of the sea on dry land. 17 As for Me, behold, (X)I will [n]harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18 (Y)Then the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord, when I am honored through Pharaoh, through his chariots and his horsemen.”

19 (Z)The angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them. 20 So it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel; and there was the cloud [o]along with the darkness, yet it gave light at night. Thus the one did not come near the other all night.

21 (AA)Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord [p]swept the sea back by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into (AB)dry land, so (AC)the waters were divided. 22 (AD)The sons of Israel [q]went through the midst of the sea on the dry land, and (AE)the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 Then (AF)the Egyptians took up the pursuit, and all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots and his horsemen went in after them into the midst of the sea. 24 At the morning watch, (AG)the Lord looked down on the [r]army of the Egyptians [s]through the pillar of fire and cloud and brought the [t]army of the Egyptians into confusion. 25 He [u]caused their chariot wheels to swerve, and He made them drive with difficulty; so the Egyptians said, “Let [v]us flee from Israel, (AH)for the Lord is fighting for them against the Egyptians.”

26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “(AI)Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may come back over the Egyptians, over their chariots and their horsemen.” 27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and (AJ)the sea returned to its normal state at daybreak, while the Egyptians were fleeing [w]right into it; then the Lord [x](AK)overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. 28 The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, [y]even Pharaoh’s entire army that had gone into the sea after them; (AL)not even one of them remained. 29 But the sons of Israel walked on (AM)dry land through the midst of the sea, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

30 (AN)Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel (AO)saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 When Israel saw the great [z]power which the Lord had [aa]used against the Egyptians, the people [ab]feared the Lord, and (AP)they believed in the Lord and in His servant Moses.

The Song of Moses and Israel

15 (AQ)Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the Lord, [ac]and said,

“[ad](AR)I will sing to the Lord, for He [ae]is highly exalted;
(AS)The horse and its rider He has hurled into the sea.
2 “[af](AT)The Lord is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation;
(AU)This is my God, and I will praise Him;
(AV)My father’s God, and I will (AW)extol Him.
3 “(AX)The Lord is a warrior;
[ag](AY)The Lord is His name.
4 “(AZ)Pharaoh’s chariots and his army He has cast into the sea;
And the choicest of his officers are [ah]drowned in the [ai]Red Sea.
5 “The deeps cover them;
(BA)They went down into the depths like a stone.
6 “(BB)Your right hand, O Lord, is majestic in power,
(BC)Your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy.
7 “And in the greatness of Your [aj]excellence You (BD)overthrow those who rise up against You;
(BE)You send forth Your burning anger, and it (BF)consumes them as chaff.
8 “(BG)At the blast of Your nostrils the waters were piled up,
(BH)The flowing waters stood up like a heap;
The deeps were congealed in the heart of the sea.
9 “(BI)The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will (BJ)divide the spoil;
My [ak]desire shall be [al]gratified against them;
I will draw out my sword, my hand will [am]destroy them.’
10 “(BK)You blew with Your wind, the sea covered them;
(BL)They sank like lead in the [an]mighty waters.
11 “(BM)Who is like You among the gods, O Lord?
Who is like You, (BN)majestic in holiness,
(BO)Awesome in praises, (BP)working wonders?
12 “(BQ)You stretched out Your right hand,
The earth swallowed them.
13 “In Your lovingkindness You have (BR)led the people whom You have (BS)redeemed;
In Your strength You have guided them (BT)to Your holy habitation.
14 “(BU)The peoples have heard, they tremble;
Anguish has gripped the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 “Then the (BV)chiefs of Edom were dismayed;
(BW)The leaders of Moab, trembling grips them;
(BX)All the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away.
16 “(BY)Terror and dread fall upon them;
(BZ)By the greatness of Your arm they are motionless as stone;
Until Your people pass over, O Lord,
Until the people pass over whom You (CA)have purchased.
17 “(CB)You will bring them and (CC)plant them in (CD)the mountain of Your inheritance,
(CE)The place, O Lord, which You have made for Your dwelling,
(CF)The sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established.
18 “(CG)The Lord shall reign forever and ever.”

19 (CH)For the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, and the Lord brought back the waters of the sea on them, but the sons of Israel walked on (CI)dry land through the midst of the sea.

20 (CJ)Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took the (CK)timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with [ao](CL)dancing. 21 Miriam answered them,

“(CM)Sing to the Lord, for He [ap]is highly exalted;
The horse and his rider He has hurled into the sea.”

The Lord Provides Water

22 (CN)Then Moses [aq]led Israel from the [ar]Red Sea, and they went out into (CO)the wilderness of (CP)Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. 23 When they came to (CQ)Marah, they could not drink the waters [as]of Marah, for they were [at]bitter; therefore it was named [au]Marah. 24 So the people (CR)grumbled at Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” 25 Then he (CS)cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him (CT)a tree; and he threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet.

There He (CU)made for them a statute and regulation, and there He (CV)tested them. 26 And He said, “(CW)If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear (CX)to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, (CY)I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, (CZ)the Lord, am your healer.”

27 Then they came to (DA)Elim where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms, and they camped there beside the waters.

The Lord Provides Manna

16 Then they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of (DB)Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on (DC)the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt. 2 The whole congregation of the sons of Israel (DD)grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. 3 The sons of Israel said to them, “(DE)Would that we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, (DF)when we sat by the pots of [av]meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, (DG)I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may (DH)test them, whether or not they will walk in My [aw]instruction. 5 (DI)On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, “At evening [ax](DJ)you will know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt; 7 and in the morning [ay]you will see (DK)the glory of the Lord, for (DL)He hears your grumblings against the Lord; and (DM)what are we, that you grumble against us?”

The Lord Provides Meat

8 Moses said, “This will happen when the Lord gives you [az]meat to eat in the evening, and bread to the full in the morning; for the Lord hears your grumblings which you grumble against Him. And what are we? Your grumblings are (DN)not against us but against the Lord.”

9 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, ‘(DO)Come near before the Lord, for He has heard your grumblings.’” 10 It came about as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, that they [ba]looked toward the wilderness, and behold, (DP)the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. 11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 12 “(DQ)I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, ‘[bb]At twilight you shall eat [bc]meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and (DR)you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

13 So it came about at evening that (DS)the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning (DT)there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 (DU)When the layer of dew [bd]evaporated, behold, on the [be]surface of the wilderness (DV)there was a fine flake-like thing, fine as the frost on the ground. 15 When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “[bf]What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “(DW)It is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is [bg]what the Lord has commanded, ‘Gather of it every man [bh]as much as he should eat; you shall take [bi](DX)an omer apiece according to the number of persons each of you has in his tent.’” 17 The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much and some little. 18 When they measured it with an omer, (DY)he who had gathered much had no excess, and he who had gathered little had no lack; every man gathered [bj]as much as he should eat. 19 Moses said to them, “(DZ)Let no man leave any of it until morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and became foul; and Moses was angry with them. 21 They gathered it morning by morning, every man [bk]as much as he should eat; but when the sun grew hot, it would melt.

The Sabbath Observed

22 (EA)Now on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. When all the (EB)leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, 23 then he said to them, “This is what the Lord [bl]meant: (EC)Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and (ED)all that is left over [bm]put aside to be kept until morning.” 24 So they [bn]put it aside until morning, as Moses had ordered, and (EE)it did not become foul nor was there any worm in it. 25 Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. 26 (EF)Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be [bo]none.”

27 It came about on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. 28 Then the Lord said to Moses, “(EG)How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My [bp]instructions? 29 See, [bq]the Lord has given you the sabbath; therefore He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain every man in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

31 The house of (EH)Israel named it [br]manna, and it was like (EI)coriander seed, white, and its taste was like wafers with honey. 32 Then Moses said, “This is [bs]what the Lord has commanded, ‘Let an omerful of it be kept throughout your generations, that they may see the bread that I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’” 33 Moses said to Aaron, “(EJ)Take a jar and put an omerful of manna in it, and place it before the Lord to be kept throughout your generations.” 34 As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before (EK)the Testimony, to be kept. 35 (EL)The sons of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. 36 (Now (EM)an omer is a tenth of an [bt]ephah.)

Water in the Rock

17 Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by [bu]stages from the wilderness of (EN)Sin, according to the [bv]command of the Lord, and camped at (EO)Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. 2 Therefore the people (EP)quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “(EQ)Why do you quarrel with me? (ER)Why do you test the Lord?” 3 But the people thirsted there for water; and [bw]they (ES)grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill [bx]us and [by]our children and [bz](ET)our livestock with thirst?” 4 So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “What shall I do to this people? A (EU)little more and they will stone me.” 5 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of (EV)the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which (EW)you struck the Nile, and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at (EX)Horeb; and (EY)you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 He named the place [ca](EZ)Massah and [cb](FA)Meribah because of the quarrel of the sons of Israel, and because they (FB)tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us, or not?”

Amalek Fought

8 Then (FC)Amalek came and fought against Israel at (FD)Rephidim. 9 So Moses said to (FE)Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with (FF)the staff of God in my hand.” 10 Joshua did as Moses [cc]told him, [cd]and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and (FG)Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand [ce]down, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur (FH)supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set. 13 So Joshua [cf]overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “(FI)Write this in [cg]a book as a memorial and [ch]recite it to Joshua, [ci]that (FJ)I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an (FK)altar and named it (FL)The Lord is My Banner; 16 and he said, “[cj](FM)The Lord has sworn; the Lord will have war against Amalek from generation to generation.”

17 After Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them along the road to the land of the Philistines, although that was nearby, for God said, “The people might change their minds if they see war and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by the way of the wilderness to the Sea of Reeds, and Bnei-Yisrael went up out of the land of Egypt armed.

19 Moses also took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made Bnei-Yisrael swear an oath saying, “God will surely remember you, and then you are to carry my bones away with you.”[a]

20 So they journeyed from Succoth and encamped in Etham, on the edge of the wilderness. 21 Adonai went before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead the way and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light. So they could travel both day and night. [b] 22 The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night never departed from the people.

Sea of Reeds Showdown

14 Adonai spoke to Moses saying, 2 “Speak to Bnei-Yisrael, so that they turn back and encamp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. You are to camp by the sea, opposite Baal-zephon. 3 Pharaoh will say concerning Bnei-Yisrael, ‘They are wandering aimlessly in the land—the wilderness has shut them in!’ 4 I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, so he will follow after them. Then I will be glorified over Pharaoh along with all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am Adonai.” So they did so.

5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his servants had a change of heart toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we let Israel go from serving us?” 6 So he prepared his chariots and took his people with him. 7 He took 600 of the finest chariots, along with all other chariots of Egypt, and captains over them. 8 Adonai hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, so he pursued Bnei-Yisrael, for Bnei-Yisrael went out with a high hand. 9 But the Egyptians pursued them with all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, as well as his charioteers and his army, and overtook them as they were encamped by the sea, beside Pi-hahiroth opposite Baal-zephon.

10 When Pharaoh drew near, Bnei-Yisrael lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them! So they were terrified, and Bnei-Yisrael cried out to Adonai. 11 They said to Moses, “Have you taken us away to die in the wilderness because there were no graves in Egypt? Why have you dealt this way with us, to bring us out of Egypt? 12 Did we not say to you in Egypt, ‘Let us alone, so that we may serve the Egyptians?’ It was better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness!”

13 But Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid! Stand still, and see the salvation of Adonai, which He will perform for you today. You have seen the Egyptians today, but you will never see them again, ever! 14 Adonai will fight for you, while you hold your peace.”

15 Then Adonai said to Moses, “Why are you crying to Me? Tell Bnei-Yisrael to go forward. 16 Lift up your staff, stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it. Then Bnei-Yisrael will go into the midst of the sea on dry ground. 17 Then I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will go in after them, so that I will be glorified over Pharaoh and all his army, his chariots and his horsemen. 18 Then the Egyptians will know that I am Adonai, when I have been glorified over Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”

19 Then the angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them. Also the pillar of cloud moved from in front and stood behind them, 20 and so came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel—there was the cloud and the darkness over here, yet it gave light by night over there—neither one came near the other all night long.

21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. Adonai drove the sea back with a strong east wind throughout the night and turned the sea into dry land. So the waters were divided. 22 Then Bnei-Yisrael went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, while the waters were like walls to them on their right and on their left.[c]

23 But the Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots and his horsemen. 24 Now it came about during the morning watch that Adonai looked at the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud and caused the army of the Egyptians to panic. 25 He took off their chariot wheels and caused them to drive heavily, so that the Egyptians said, “Get away from the presence of Israel! For Adonai fights for them against the Egyptians!”

26 Then Adonai said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the waters come back upon the Egyptians, over their chariots and their horsemen.” 27 So Moses stretched his hand out over the waters, and the sea returned to its strength at the break of dawn. The Egyptians were fleeing from it, but Adonai overthrew them in the midst of the sea. [d] 28 The waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen and the entire army of Pharaoh that went after them into the sea. Not one of them remained.

29 But Bnei-Yisrael had walked on dry land in the midst of the sea, and the waters were like walls to them on their right hand and on their left. 30 So Adonai saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 When Israel saw the great work that Adonai did over the Egyptians, the people feared Adonai, and they believed in Adonai and in His servant Moses.

Song of Moses and Miriam

15 Then Moses and Bnei-Yisrael sang this song to Adonai:[e]

I will sing to Adonai, for He is highly exalted!
The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea.
2 Adonai is my strength and song,
and He has become my salvation.[f]
This is my God, and I will glorify Him,
    my father’s God, and I will exalt Him.
3 Adonai is a warrior—Adonai is His Name!
4 Pharaoh’s chariots and his army
    He has hurled into the sea,
    and his chosen captains have sunk
        into the Sea of Reeds.
5 The deeps cover them.
    They sank to the depths like a stone.
6 Your right hand, Adonai, is glorious in power.
    Your right hand, Adonai, dashes the enemy to pieces.
7 In the greatness of Your excellency
    You overthrow those who resist You.
    You send forth Your wrath—
    it consumes them as stubble.
8 With the blast of Your nostrils the waters piled up.
    The floods stood upright as a heap.
    The deeps became firm ground in the heart of the sea.
9 The enemy said, “I will pursue,
    I will overtake, I will divide the spoil.
    My lust shall gorge on them!
    I will draw my sword—my hand will destroy them.”
10 You blew with Your wind, the sea covered them.
They sank like lead in the mighty waters.
11 Who is like You, Adonai, among the gods?
Who is like You,
    glorious in holiness,
    awesome in praises,
    doing wonders?[g]
12 You stretched out Your right hand,
the earth swallowed them.
13 You in Your lovingkindness
led the people You have redeemed.
You guided them in Your strength to Your holy habitation.
14 When the peoples hear, they will tremble—
    anguish will seize
    the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 Then the chiefs of Edom are terrified.
Trembling grips Moab’s mighty men.
All of Canaan’s inhabitants will melt away.
16 Terror and dread will fall on them.
By the greatness of Your arm they become still as a stone,
till Your people cross over, Adonai,
till the people whom You purchased cross over.
17 You bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of Your inheritance,
    the place, Adonai, that You have made
        for Yourself to dwell in—
    the Sanctuary, Adonai,
        which Your hands have prepared.
18 Adonai will reign forever and ever!

19 For Pharaoh’s horses with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, but Adonai brought the waters of the sea back over them. Yet Bnei-Yisrael walked in the midst of the sea on dry ground. 20 Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing, 21 as Miriam sang to them:

Sing to Adonai, for He is highly exalted!
The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!

Bitter Waters Made Sweet

22 Then Moses led Israel onward from the Sea of Reeds. They went out into the wilderness of Shur. But they travelled three days in the wilderness and found no water. 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink from the waters because they were bitter. On account of this it was called Marah. 24 So the people complained to Moses saying, “What are we going to drink?”

25 So he cried out to Adonai, and Adonai showed him a tree. When he threw it into the waters, they were made sweet.

There He made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them. 26 He said, “If you diligently listen to the voice of Adonai your God, do what is right in His eyes, pay attention to His mitzvot, and keep all His decrees, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians. For I am Adonai who heals you.”

27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees. So they camped there by the waters.

Manna From Heaven

16 They journeyed on from Elim, and the entire community of Bnei-Yisrael came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after leaving the land of Egypt. 2 But the whole congregation of Bnei-Yisrael murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. 3 Bnei-Yisrael said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of Adonai in the land of Egypt, when we sat by pots of meat, when we ate bread until we were full. But you have brought us into the wilderness, to kill this entire congregation with hunger.”

4 Then Adonai said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you.[h] The people will go out and gather a day’s portion every day, so that I can test them to find out whether they will walk according to My Torah or not. 5 So on the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather day by day.”

6 So Moses and Aaron said to all Bnei-Yisrael, “In the evening you will know that Adonai has brought you out from the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning, then you will see the glory of Adonai. For He heard your complaining against Him. What are we? You complain against us?” 8 Then Moses said, “Adonai will give you meat to eat in the evening and enough bread to fill you in the morning, since Adonai hears your complaints that you mutter against Him, what are we? Your complaining is not against us, but against Adonai!”

9 Moses said to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of Bnei-Yisrael, ‘Come near before Adonai, because He has heard your complaining.’”

10 Then, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of Bnei-Yisrael, they looked toward the wilderness, and the glory of Adonai appeared in the cloud. 11 Adonai spoke to Moses saying, 12 “I have heard the complaining of Bnei-Yisrael. Speak to them saying, ‘At dusk you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am Adonai your God.’”

13 So when evening fell, quails came up and covered the camp. Moreover, in the morning there was a layer of dew all around the camp. 14 When the layer of dew was gone, on the surface of the desert was a thin, flake-like frost, as fine as the frost on the ground. 15 When Bnei-Yisrael saw it, they said one to another, “What is it?”[i] For they did not know what it was. Then Moses said to them, “It is the bread that Adonai has given you to eat. 16 This is the word that Adonai has commanded. Every man is to gather according to his needs, an omer[j] per person, according to the number of people per household. Each man is to take it for those who are in his tent.”

17 Bnei-Yisrael did so, and some gathered more, some less. 18 When they measured it with an omer, those who gathered more had nothing left over, and those that gathered less did not lack at all. Every man gathered according to his appetite.

19 Also Moses said to them, “Let no one save any of it until the morning.”

20 However, they did not listen to Moses. Some of them preserved it until the morning—but it bred worms and rotted. So Moses was angry with them.

21 So they gathered it morning by morning, each man according to his needs, and as the sun became hot it melted. 22 On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each individual. So all the leaders of the community came and informed Moses. 23 But he said to them, “This is what Adonai has said. Tomorrow is a Shabbat rest, a holy Shabbat to Adonai. Bake whatever you would bake, and boil what you would boil. Store up for yourselves everything that remains, to be kept until the morning.”

24 So they set it aside until the morning, just as Moses instructed, and it did not rot nor were there any worms. 25 Then Moses said, “Eat that today, because today is a Shabbat to Adonai. Today you will not find it in the field. 26 You are to gather it for six days, but the seventh day is the Shabbat, and there will be none.”

27 Yet on the seventh day, some of the people went out to gather and they found none. 28 Adonai said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep My mitzvot and My Torah? 29 See, Adonai has given you the Shabbat, so on the sixth day He gives you the bread of two days. Let every man stay in his place, and let no man go out on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

31 The house of Israel named it manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey. 32 Then Moses said, “This is what Adonai has commanded. Let a full omer of it be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out from the land of Egypt.”

33 Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put a full omer of manna inside. Store it up before Adonai, to be kept throughout your generations.”

34 Just as Adonai commanded Moses, Aaron stored it up in front of the Testimony, to be preserved. 35 Bnei-Yisrael ate the manna for 40 years. They ate the manna until they came to an inhabited land, when they came to the borders of the land of Canaan. 36 Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.[k]

Test and Quarreling

17 All the congregation of Bnei-Yisrael journeyed from the wilderness of Sin in stages, according to the command of Adonai, and camped in Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 So the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test Adonai?”

3 But the people thirsted for water there, and they complained against Moses and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt? To kill us with thirst, along with our children and cattle?”

4 So Moses cried out to Adonai saying, “What am I to do for these people? They are about ready to stone me.”

5 Adonai said to Moses, “Walk before the people, and take of the elders of Israel with you, along with your staff with which you struck the river. Take it in your hand and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before you, there upon the rock in Horeb. You are to strike the rock, and water will come out of it so that the people can drink.” Then Moses did just so in the eyes of the elders of Israel. 7 The name of the place was called Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of Bnei-Yisrael, and because they tested Adonai saying, “Is Adonai among us, or not?”

War Against Amalek

8 Then the Amalekites came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men, go out, and fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”

10 So Joshua did as Moses said, and fought the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 When Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed. But when he let down his hand, the Amalekites prevailed. 12 Moses’ hands grew heavy, so they took a stone, put it under him, and he sat down. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on each side. So his hands were steady until the sun went down. 13 So Joshua overpowered the Amalekites and his army with the edge of the sword.

14 Adonai said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in the book, and rehearse it in the hearing of Joshua, for I will utterly blot out the memory of the Amalekites from under heaven.”

15 Then Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Adonai-Nissi. [l] 16 Then he said, “By the hand upon the throne of Adonai, Adonai will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

12 Then they told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor. 13 Sisera called together all his chariots, (I)nine hundred iron chariots, and all the people who were with him, from (J)Harosheth-hagoyim to the river Kishon. 14 Deborah said to Barak, “Arise! For this is the day in which the Lord has given Sisera into your hands; [g]behold, (K)the Lord has gone out before you.” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him. 15 (L)The Lord [h]routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot. 16 But Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth-hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; (M)not even one was left.

17 Now Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. 18 Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, “Turn aside, my master, turn aside to me! Do not be afraid.” And he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a [i]rug. 19 (N)He said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened a [j]bottle of milk and gave him a drink; then she covered him. 20 He said to her, “Stand in the doorway of the tent, and it shall be if anyone comes and inquires of you, and says, ‘Is there anyone here?’ that you shall say, ‘No.’” 21 But Jael, Heber’s wife, (O)took a tent peg and [k]seized a hammer in her hand, and went secretly to him and drove the peg into his temple, and it went through into the ground; for he was sound asleep and exhausted. 23 So (P)God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the sons of Israel. 24 The hand of the sons of Israel pressed heavier and heavier upon Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had [m]destroyed Jabin the king of Canaan.

The Song of Deborah and Barak

5 (Q)Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam sang on that day, saying,

That (S)the people volunteered,
Bless the Lord!
3 “Hear, O kings; give ear, O rulers!
(T)I—to the Lord, I will sing,
I will sing praise to the Lord, the God of Israel.

When You marched from the field of Edom,
(V)The earth quaked, the heavens also dripped,
Even the clouds dripped water.

12 They told Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor. 13 So Sisera ordered all his chariots—900 iron chariots—and all the troops that were with him, from Harosheth-ha-goyim to the Kishon.

14 Then Deborah said to Barak, “Arise! For this is the day in which Adonai will deliver Sisera into your hand. Has Adonai not gone out before you?” So Barak came down from Mount Tabor with 10,000 men following him. 15 Adonai threw Sisera and all his chariots and all his army into confusion before Barak with the edge of the sword. Then Sisera got down from his chariot and fled away on foot. 16 But Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth-ha-goyim. The whole army of Sisera fell by the sword; not one was left.

17 Meanwhile Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Yael the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between King Jabin of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. 18 So Yael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me! Don’t be afraid!” So he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a blanket.

19 He said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened a skin of milk and made him drink some, and covered him. 20 Then he said to her, “Stand at the entrance of the tent, and if anyone comes and asks you saying, ‘Is there a man here?’ then you will say, ‘There’s no one.’”

21 Then Yael, Heber’s wife, took a tent pin and got a hammer in her hand, approached him stealthily and drove the pin into his temple until it pierced through into the ground—for he was exhausted and in a deep sleep. So he died. 22 Now behold, as Barak was pursuing Sisera, Yael came out to meet him and said to him, “Come, I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” So he entered with her, and behold, Sisera was lying dead, with a tent-pin in his temple!

23 So on that day God subdued King Jabin of Canaan before Bnei-Yisrael. 24 The hand of Bnei-Yisrael pressed hard on King Jabin of Canaan until they had cut off King Jabin of Canaan.

Deborah’s Song

5 Then Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang on that day saying:

2 “When leaders take the lead in Israel,
when people freely offer themselves,
    bless Adonai!
3 Listen, O kings! Give ear, O rulers!
I, to Adonai I will sing,
I will sing praise to Adonai,
    the God of Israel.
4 Adonai, when You came out from Seir,
when You marched from Edom’s field,
    the earth trembled,
    the heavens also dropped,
    yes, the clouds dropped water.
5 The mountains quaked before Adonai,
this Sinai at the presence of Adonai,
    the God of Israel!
6 In the days of Shamgar son of Anath,
    in the days of Yael,
the highways were deserted,
travelers walked by crooked paths.
7 Villages were deserted in Israel,
deserted, until I, Deborah, arose,
    a mother in Israel arose.
8 They chose new gods—
then war was in the gates.
No shield or spear was seen
    among 40,000 in Israel!
9 My heart is with Israel’s rulers,
who offer themselves freely among the people. Bless Adonai!
10 Riders on white donkeys,
sitting on saddle blankets,
traveling on the road, sing!
11 Louder than the sound of archers,
    at the watering places!
There let them rehearse
    the righteous acts of Adonai,
    the righteous deeds for His villages in Israel.
Then the people of Adonai
    went down to the gates.
12 Awake, awake, Deborah!
Awake, awake, utter a song!
Arise, Barak, lead away your captives,
    O son of Abinoam!
13 Then a remnant of nobles came down.
Adonai’s people came down to me
    with the mighty ones.
14 Those with root in Amalek
are from Ephraim, following you,
    Benjamin, with your peoples.
From Machir came down rulers,
and from Zebulun wielding
    the marshal’s staff.
15 Issachar’s chiefs were with Deborah.
Issachar was with Barak.
Into the valley they rushed at his heels.
Among the divisions of Reuben
    there were great resolves of heart.
16 Why did you stay in the sheepfolds—
to hear the piping for the flocks?
Among the clans of Reuben
    there was much searching of heart.
17 Gilead stayed beyond the Jordan,
and Dan, why did he stay by the ships?
Asher sat at the seacoast,
    dwelling by its docks.
18 Zebulun is a people who jeopardized
their lives to death, and Naphtali also,
    on the heights of the battlefield.
19 The kings came, they fought,
then the kings of Canaan fought,
at Taanach, by the waters of Megiddo,
but they took no spoil of silver.
20 From heaven, the stars fought,
in their courses they fought Sisera.
21 The Kishon torrent swept them away—
that ancient torrent, the torrent Kishon!
O my soul, march on with strength!
22 Then the horses’ hooves beat
from the dashing,
the dashing of his mighty steeds.
23 ‘Curse Meroz!’ said the angel of Adonai,
‘Utterly curse its inhabitants,
for they came not to the aid of Adonai,
to the aid of Adonai among the mighty.’
24 Blessed above women is Yael,
    the wife of Heber the Kenite,
above women in the tent is she blessed.
25 Water he asked, milk she gave him.
In a lordly bowl she brought him butter.
26 Her hand reached for the tent pin,
her right hand to the workmen’s hammer,
and with the hammer she struck Sisera,
she smashed his head—
yes, she crushed and pierced his temple.
27 At her feet he collapsed, he fell, he lay.
Between her feet he bowed, he fell.
Where he bowed, there he fell dead.
28 Through the window, Sisera’s mother
looked out, through the lattice.
    and lamented shrilly:
‘Why does his chariot delay in coming?
Why do the wheels of his chariots tarry?’
29 The wisest of her princesses answer her,
yes, she repeats the words to herself:
30 ‘Are they not finding, dividing the spoil?
A maiden, maidens for every warrior!
To Sisera a spoil of dyed garments—
a spoil of dyed garments of embroidery,
double-dyed garments of embroidery
    for the necks of every spoiler!’
31 So let all Your enemies perish, Adonai!
But may those who love Him be
like the rising of the sun in its might.”

Then the land had peace for 40 years.

God’s Dealings with Israel Rehearsed

20 Now in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, [a]certain of the (A)elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and sat before me. 2 And the word of the Lord came to me saying, 3 “Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord [b]God, “Do you come to inquire of Me? As I live,” declares the Lord God, “(B)I will not be inquired of by you.”’ 4 Will you judge them, will you judge them, son of man? (C)Make them know the abominations of their fathers; 5 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “On the day when I (D)chose Israel and [c]swore to the [d]descendants of the house of Jacob and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt, when I [e]swore to them, saying, (E)I am the Lord your God, 6 on that day I swore to them, (F)to bring them out from the land of Egypt into a land that I had [f]selected for them, (G)flowing with milk and honey, which is (H)the glory of all lands. 7 I said to them, ‘(I)Cast away, each of you, the detestable things of his eyes, and (J)do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; (K)I am the Lord your God.’ 8 But they (L)rebelled against Me and were not willing to listen to Me; [g]they did not cast away the detestable things of their eyes, nor did they forsake the (M)idols of Egypt.

Then I [h]resolved to (N)pour out My wrath on them, to accomplish My anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. 9 But I acted (O)for the sake of My name, that it should (P)not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made Myself known to them by bringing them out of the land of Egypt. 10 So I took them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the (Q)wilderness. 11 I gave them My (R)statutes and informed them of My ordinances, by (S)which, if a man [i]observes them, he will live. 12 Also I gave them My sabbaths to be a (T)sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. 13 But the house of Israel (U)rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes and they rejected My ordinances, (V)by which, if a man [j]observes them, he will live; and My (W)sabbaths they greatly profaned. Then I [k]resolved to (X)pour out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to annihilate them. 14 But I acted for the sake of My name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, before whose sight I had brought them out. 15 Also (Y)I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands, 16 because they rejected My ordinances, and as for My statutes, they did not walk in them; they even profaned My sabbaths, for their (Z)heart continually went after their idols. 17 Yet My eye spared them rather than destroying them, and I did not cause their (AA)annihilation in the wilderness.

18 “I said to their [l](AB)children in the wilderness, ‘(AC)Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers or keep their ordinances or defile yourselves with their idols. 19 (AD)I am the Lord your God; (AE)walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and [m]observe them. 20 (AF)Sanctify My sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’ 21 But the (AG)children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes, nor were they careful to observe My ordinances, by which, if a man observes them, he will live; they profaned My sabbaths. So I [n]resolved to pour out My wrath on them, to accomplish My anger against them in the wilderness. 22 But I (AH)withdrew My hand and acted (AI)for the sake of My name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out. 23 Also I swore to them in the wilderness that I would (AJ)scatter them among the nations and disperse them among the lands, 24 because they had not observed My ordinances, but had rejected My statutes and had profaned My sabbaths, and (AK)their eyes were [o]on the idols of their fathers. 25 I also gave them statutes that were (AL)not good and ordinances by which they could not live; 26 and I pronounced them (AM)unclean because of their gifts, in that they (AN)caused all [p]their firstborn to pass through the fire so that I might make them desolate, in order that they might (AO)know that I am the Lord.”’

27 “Therefore, son of man, (AP)speak to the house of Israel and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Yet in this your fathers have (AQ)blasphemed Me by (AR)acting treacherously against Me. 28 When I had (AS)brought them into the land which I swore to give to them, then they saw every (AT)high hill and every leafy tree, and they offered there their sacrifices and there they presented the provocation of their offering. There also they made their soothing aroma and there they poured out their drink offerings. 29 Then I said to them, ‘What is the high place to which you go?’ So its name is called [q]Bamah to this day.”’ 30 Therefore, say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Will you defile yourselves [r]after the manner of your (AU)fathers and play the harlot after their detestable things? 31 [s]When you offer your gifts, when you (AV)cause your sons to pass through the fire, you are defiling yourselves with all your idols to this day. And shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live,” declares the Lord God, “I will not be inquired of by you. 32 What (AW)comes [t]into your mind will not come about, when you say: ‘We will be like the nations, like the tribes of the lands, (AX)serving wood and stone.’

God Will Restore Israel to Her Land

33 “As I live,” declares the Lord God, “surely with a mighty hand and with an (AY)outstretched arm and with wrath poured out, I shall be (AZ)king over you. 34 I will (BA)bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm and with (BB)wrath poured out; 35 and I will bring you into the (BC)wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face. 36 As I (BD)entered into judgment with your fathers in the (BE)wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will enter into judgment with you,” declares the Lord God. 37 “I will make you (BF)pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant; 38 and I will (BG)purge from you the rebels and those who transgress against Me; I will bring them out of the land where they sojourn, but they will (BH)not enter the [u]land of Israel. Thus you will know that I am the Lord.

39 “As for you, O house of Israel,” thus says the Lord God, “(BI)Go, serve everyone his idols; [v]but later you will surely listen to Me, and My holy name you will (BJ)profane no longer with your gifts and with your idols. 40 For on My holy mountain, on the high mountain of Israel,” declares the Lord God, “there the whole house of Israel, (BK)all of them, will serve Me in the land; there I will (BL)accept them and there I will [w]seek your contributions and the choicest of your gifts, with all your holy things. 41 [x]As a soothing aroma I will accept you when I (BM)bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you are scattered; and I will prove Myself (BN)holy among you in the sight of the nations. 42 And (BO)you will know that I am the Lord, (BP)when I bring you into the land of Israel, into the (BQ)land which I swore to give to your forefathers. 43 There you will (BR)remember your ways and all your deeds with which you have defiled yourselves; and you will (BS)loathe yourselves in your own [y]sight for all the evil things that you have done. 44 Then (BT)you will know that I am the Lord when I have dealt with you (BU)for My name’s sake, not according to your evil ways or according to your corrupt deeds, O house of Israel,” declares the Lord God.’”

Rebellion and Return

20 On the tenth day of the fifth month of the seventh year, some of the elders of Israel came to seek Adonai. They sat before me. 2 The word of Adonai came to me saying: 3 “Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel. Say to them, thus says Adonai Elohim: ‘Have you come to inquire of Me? As I live’—it is a declaration of Adonai—‘I will not be inquired of by you.’

4 “Will you judge them, son of man, will you judge them? Make them know the detestable practices of their fathers. 5 Say to them, thus says Adonai Elohim: On the day I chose Israel, I lifted up My hand to the seed of the house of Jacob and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt. I lifted up My hand to them saying, ‘I am Adonai your God.’ 6 On that day I lifted up My hand to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had sought out for them, flowing with milk and honey, the splendor of all lands. 7 I said to them, ‘Each of you must throw away every detestable thing from his eyes, and not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am Adonai your God.’

8 “But they rebelled against Me and were unwilling to listen to Me. None of them cast away the detestable things that were before their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. So I resolved to pour out My fury upon them, to expend My anger upon them in the midst of the land of Egypt. 9 But I acted, for the sake of My Name, to keep it from being profaned in the eyes of the nations, where they were, in whose sight I made Myself known to them, to bring them out from the land of Egypt. 10 So I led them out from the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. 11 I gave them My laws and taught them My judgments, which if a man does, he will live by them. 12 I also gave them My Shabbatot, as a sign between Me and them, so that they would know that I am Adonai who made them holy.

13 “But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes. They rejected My judgments, which if a man does, he will live by them. They greatly profaned My Shabbatot. Then I resolved to pour out My fury on them in the wilderness to consume them. 14 But for the sake of My Name I did what would keep it from being profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out. 15 Yet I also lifted My hand to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the splendor of all lands. 16 For they rejected My laws, did not walk in My rulings and profaned My Shabbatot—for their heart went after their idols. 17 Nevertheless, My eye spared them from destruction, so I did not make a full end of them in the wilderness.

18 “I said to their children in the wilderness, ‘Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, do not keep their ordinances, do not defile yourselves with their idols. 19 I am Adonai your God. Walk in My statutes, keep My ordinances and do them. 20 Keep My Shabbatot holy, so they will be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am Adonai your God.’

21 “But the children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes. They did not keep My ordinances to do them, which if a man does, he will live by them; they profaned My Shabbatot. Then I resolved to pour out My fury on them, to expend My anger on them in the wilderness. 22 Nevertheless, I withheld My hand. For the sake of My Name I did what would keep it from being profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out. 23 I also lifted up My hand to them in the wilderness, to scatter them among the nations and disperse them through the countries. 24 For they had not obeyed My ordinances, but had rejected My statutes and profaned My Shabbatot. Their eyes went after their fathers’ idols. 25 I also gave them statutes that were not good, ordinances by which they could not live. 26 I let them become polluted in their own gifts, when they offered up all that opened the womb to pass through the fire, so that I might make them desolate, so that they would know that I am Adonai.

27 “Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, thus says Adonai Elohim: ‘Again your fathers have blasphemed Me, in that they dealt faithlessly with Me. 28 When I brought them into the land, which I lifted up My hand to give to them, they saw every high hill and every leafy tree. There they slaughtered their sacrifices and presented their offensive offering. There they made their soothing aroma and poured out their drink offerings. 29 So I asked them, ‘What is the high place where you are going?’ So the name of it is called Bamah[a] to this day. 30 Therefore say to the house of Israel, thus says Adonai Elohim: Will you pollute yourselves after the manner of your fathers and go after their abominations? 31 When offering your gifts, making your sons pass through the fire, you keep polluting yourselves with all your idols, up to this day. So should I be inquired of by you, house of Israel? As I live”—it is a declaration of Adonai—“I will not be inquired of by you. 32 What comes up in your mind will not happen at all, when you say, ‘Let us be like the nations, like the families of the countries, worshiping wood and stone.’ 33 As I live,”—it is a declaration of Adonai—“surely with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm and with fury poured out, I will be king over you. 34 I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, with fury poured out. 35 I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples. I will judge you there face to face. 36 Just as I judged your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will judge you.” It is a declaration of Adonai.

37 “I will make you pass under the rod and bring you into the bond of the covenant. 38 I will purge out the rebels from among you and those who transgress against Me. I will bring them out from the land where they dwell, but they will not enter the land of Israel. So you will know that I am Adonai.

39 “As for you, house of Israel,” thus says Adonai Elohim: “Go on serving your idols, all of you! Yet afterward, you will surely listen to Me. My holy Name you will no longer profane with your gifts and your idols. 40 For in My holy mountain, Israel’s high mountain”—it is a declaration of Adonai—“there the whole house of Israel, all of them, will serve Me in the land. There I will take pleasure in them. There I will receive your offerings, the first of your gifts, with all your holy things. 41 With your sweet aroma I will accept you, when I bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered. I will be sanctified in you in the sight of the nations. 42 You will know that I am Adonai, when I bring you into the land of Israel, into the country where I lifted up My hand to give it to your fathers. 43 There you will remember your ways and all your deeds, by which you defiled yourselves. You will loathe yourselves for all your evil that you have done. 44 Then you will know that I am Adonai, when I deal with you for My Name’s sake and not according to your evil ways and your corrupt deeds, house of Israel.” It is a declaration of Adonai.

Jesus Walks on the Water

15 So Jesus, perceiving that they were [a]intending to come and take Him by force (A)to make Him king, (B)withdrew again to (C)the mountain by Himself alone.

16 Now when evening came, His (D)disciples went down to the sea, 17 and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea (E)to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea began to be stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. 19 Then, when they had rowed about [b]three or four miles, they *saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened. 20 But He *said to them, “It is I; [c](F)do not be afraid.” 21 So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

22 The next day (G)the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus (H)had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone. 23 There came other small boats from (I)Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the (J)Lord (K)had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and (L)came to Capernaum seeking Jesus. 25 When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “(M)Rabbi, when did You get here?”

Words to the People

26 Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you (N)seek Me, not because you saw (O)signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not (P)work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to (Q)eternal life, which (R)the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, (S)has set His seal.” 28 Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is (T)the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He (U)has sent.” 30 So they said to Him, “(V)What then do You do for a (W)sign, so that we may see, and believe You? 52 (BK)Then the Jews (BL)began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (BM)the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will (BN)raise him up on the last day. 55 For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (BO)abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the (BP)living Father (BQ)sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which (BR)came down out of heaven; not as (BS)the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread (BT)will live forever.”

[a] 15 Realizing that they were about to come and seize Him by force to make Him king, Yeshua withdrew again to the mountain, Himself alone.

The Savior on the Sea

16 Now when evening came, Yeshua’s disciples went down to the sea. 17 Getting into a boat, they set out to cross the sea toward Capernaum. By now it had become dark, and still Yeshua had not come to them. 18 A great wind began to blow, stirring up the sea.

19 After they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia,[b] they catch sight of Yeshua walking on the sea, approaching the boat. They were terrified! 20 But Yeshua says to them, “I am. Don’t be afraid.” [c] 21 Then they wanted to take Him into the boat, and right away the boat reached the shore where they were headed.

The Bread from Heaven

22 The next day, the crowd remaining on the other side of the sea realized that no other boat had been there except the one, and that Yeshua hadn’t gone into the boat with His disciples, but that His disciples had gone away alone. 23 Some other boats from Tiberias came close to the place where they had eaten the bread after the Master had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd realized that neither Yeshua nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and set off for Capernaum to find Him. 25 When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”

26 Yeshua responded to them, “Amen, amen I tell you, you seek Me not because you saw signs, but because you ate all the bread and were filled. 27 Don’t work for food that spoils, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on Him, God the Father has put the seal of approval.”

28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do to perform the works of God?”

29 Yeshua answered them, “This is the work of God, to trust in the One He sent.”

30 So they said to Him, “Then what sign do You perform, so that we may see and believe You? What work do You do? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘Out of heaven He gave them bread to eat.’”[d]

32 Yeshua answered them, “Amen, amen I tell you, it isn’t Moses who has given you bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the One coming down from heaven and giving life to the world.”

34 So they said to Him, “Sir, give us this bread from now on!”

35 Yeshua said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty. 36 But I told you that you have seen Me, yet you do not believe. 37 Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and anyone coming to Me I will never reject. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do My own will but the will of the One who sent Me.

39 “Now this is the will of the One who sent Me, that I lose not one of all He has given Me, but raise each one on the last day. 40 For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who sees the Son and trusts in Him may have eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day.”

41 Some of the Judeans[e] started to grumble about Him, because He said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They were saying, “Isn’t this Yeshua the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”

43 Yeshua answered, “Stop grumbling among yourselves! 44 No one can come to Me unless My Father who sent Me draws him—and I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘They will all be taught by God.’[f] Everyone who has listened and learned from the Father comes to Me. 46 Not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God—He has seen the Father.

47 “Amen, amen I tell you, he who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread, which came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever. This bread is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

52 Then the Jews began arguing with one another, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”

53 So Yeshua said to them, “Amen, amen I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

55 “For My flesh is real food and My blood is real drink. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so the one who eats of Me will also live because of Me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven—not like the bread your fathers ate and then died. He who eats this bread will live forever.”

59 He said these things while teaching at the synagogue in Capernaum.

Fallout from a Hard Teaching

60 So when many of His disciples heard this, they said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can listen to it?”

61 But Yeshua knew His disciples were murmuring, so He said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man going back up to the place where He was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no benefit. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and are life! 64 Yet some of you do not trust.” Yeshua knew from the beginning who were the ones who did not trust, as well as which one would betray Him.

65 Then He told them, “For this reason I’ve told you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by the Father.”

66 From this time, many of His disciples left and quit walking with Him. 67 So Yeshua said to the Twelve, “You don’t want to leave also, do you?”

68 Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life! 69 We have trusted and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

70 Yeshua answered them, “Didn’t I choose you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is the adversary!” 71 Now He was speaking of Judah, the son of Simon of Kriot—for he, one of the Twelve, was about to betray Him.
