Exodus 12
Darby Translation

12 And Jehovah spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,

2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.

3 Speak unto all the assembly of Israel, saying, On the tenth of this month let them take themselves each a lamb, for a father's house, a lamb for a house.

4 And if the household be too small for a lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take [it] according to the number of the souls; each according to [the measure] of his eating shall ye count for the lamb.

5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a yearling male; ye shall take [it] from the sheep, or from the goats.

6 And ye shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; and the whole congregation of the assembly of Israel shall kill it between the two evenings.

7 And they shall take of the blood, and put [it] on the two door-posts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.

8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; with bitter [herbs] shall they eat it.

9 Ye shall eat none of it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roast with fire; its head with its legs and with its in-wards.

10 And ye shall let none of it remain until the morning; and what remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

11 And thus shall ye eat it: your loins shall be girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste; it is Jehovah's passover.

12 And I will go through the land of Egypt in that night, and smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am Jehovah.

13 And the blood shall be for you as a sign on the houses in which ye are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be among you for destruction, when I smite the land of Egypt.

14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall celebrate it [as] a feast to Jehovah; throughout your generations [as] an ordinance for ever shall ye celebrate it.

15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread: on the very first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses; for whoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day—that soul shall be cut off from Israel.

16 And on the first day ye shall have a holy convocation, and on the seventh day a holy convocation: no manner of work shall be done on them, save what is eaten by every person—that only shall be done by you.

17 And ye shall keep the [feast of] unleavened [bread]; for in this same day have I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt; and ye shall keep this day in your generations [as] an ordinance for ever.

18 In the first [month], on the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, ye shall eat unleavened bread until the one and twentieth day of the month in the evening.

19 Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses; for whoever eateth what is leavened—that soul shall be cut off from the assembly of Israel, whether he be a sojourner, or born in the land.

20 Ye shall eat nothing leavened: in all your dwellings shall ye eat unleavened bread.

21 And Moses called all the elders of Israel, and said to them, Seize and take yourselves lambs for your families, and kill the passover.

22 And take a bunch of hyssop, and dip [it] in the blood that is in the bason, and smear the lintel and the two door-posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning.

23 And Jehovah will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he sees the blood on the lintel, and on the two door-posts, Jehovah will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come into your houses to smite [you].

24 And ye shall observe this as an ordinance for thee and for thy sons for ever.

25 And it shall come to pass, when ye are come into the land that Jehovah will give you, as he has promised, that ye shall keep this service.

26 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say to you, What mean ye by this service?

27 that ye shall say, It is a sacrifice of passover to Jehovah, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when he smote the Egyptians and delivered our houses. And the people bowed their heads and worshipped.

28 And the children of Israel went away, and did as Jehovah had commanded Moses and Aaron; so did they.

29 And it came to pass that at midnight Jehovah smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of cattle.

30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his bondmen, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house in which there was not one dead.

31 And he called Moses and Aaron in the night, and said, Rise up, go away from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve Jehovah, as ye have said.

32 Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and go; and bless me also.

33 And the Egyptians urged the people, to send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We are all dead [men]!

34 And the people took their dough before it was leavened; their kneading-troughs bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.

35 And the children of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, and they had asked of the Egyptians utensils of silver, and utensils of gold, and clothing.

36 And Jehovah had given the people favour in the eyes of the Egyptians, and they gave to them; and they spoiled the Egyptians.

37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot [that were] men, besides children.

38 And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks and herds—very much cattle.

39 And they baked the dough that they brought forth out of Egypt into unleavened cakes, for it was not leavened; for they were driven out of Egypt, and could not wait; neither had they prepared for themselves any food.

40 And the residence of the children of Israel that they resided in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years.

41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, on that same day it came to pass that all the hosts of Jehovah went out from the land of Egypt.

42 It is a night of observance to Jehovah, because of their being brought out from the land of Egypt: that same night is an observance to Jehovah for all the children of Israel in their generations.

43 And Jehovah said to Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the passover: No stranger shall eat of it;

44 but every man's bondman that is bought for money—let him be circumcised: then shall he eat it.

45 A settler and a hired servant shall not eat it.

46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth any of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.

47 All the assembly of Israel shall hold it.

48 And when a sojourner sojourneth with thee, and would hold the passover to Jehovah, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and hold it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land; but no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof.

49 One law shall be for him that is home-born and for the sojourner that sojourneth among you.

50 And all the children of Israel did as Jehovah had commanded Moses and Aaron; so did they.

51 And it came to pass on that same day, [that] Jehovah brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt according to their hosts.

12 وَخَاطَبَ الرَّبُّ مُوسَى وَهَرُونَ فِي أَرْضِ مِصْرَ قَائِلاً: 2 «مُنْذُ الآنَ يَكُونُ لَكُمْ هَذَا الشَّهْرُ رَأْسَ الشُّهُورِ وَأَوَّلَ شُهُورِ السَّنَةِ. 3 خَاطِبَا كُلَّ جَمَاعَةِ إِسْرَائِيلَ قَائِلَيْنِ: عَلَى كُلِّ وَاحِدٍ أَنْ يَأْخُذَ فِي الْعَاشِرِ مِنْ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ حَمَلاً لِعَائِلَتِهِ، وَفْقاً لِبُيُوتِ الْآبَاءِ، حَمَلاً لِكُلِّ عَائِلَةٍ. 4 وَإِنْ كَانَ الْبَيْتُ صَغِيراً لَا يَسْتَهْلِكُ حَمَلاً كَامِلاً، يَتَقَاسَمُهُ هُوَ وَجَارُهُ الْقَرِيبُ مِنْهُ بِحَسَبِ عَدَدِ الأَشْخَاصِ الْمَوْجُودِينَ هُنَاكَ، بِمِقْدَارِ مَا يَسْتَطِيعُ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ أَنْ يَأْكُلَهُ مِنَ الْحَمَلِ. 5 وَيَجِبُ أَنْ يَكُونَ الْحَمَلُ ذَكَراً ابْنَ سَنَةٍ، خَالِياً مِنْ كُلِّ عَيْبٍ، تَنْتَقُونَهُ مِنَ الْخِرْفَانِ أَوِ الْمَعِيزِ. 6 وَيَكُونُ عِنْدَكُمْ مَحْفُوظاً حَتَّى الْيَوْمِ الرَّابِعَ عَشَرَ مِنْ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ. ثُمَّ يَقُومُ كُلُّ جُمْهُورِ إِسْرَائِيلَ بِذَبْحِ الْحُمْلانِ عِنْدَ الْمَسَاءِ. 7 وَيَأْخُذُونَ الدَّمَ وَيَضَعُونَهُ عَلَى الْقَائِمَتَيْنِ وَالْعَتَبَةِ الْعُلْيَا فِي الْبُيُوتِ الَّتِي يَأْكُلُونَهُ فِيهَا. 8 ثُمَّ فِي نَفْسِ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ يَتَنَاوَلُونَ اللَّحْمَ مَشْوِيًّا بِالنَّارِ مَعَ فَطِيرٍ، يَأْكُلُونَهُ مَعَ أَعْشَابٍ مُرَّةٍ. 9 لَا تَأْكُلُوا مِنْهُ نِيئاً أَوْ مَسْلُوقاً، بَلْ مَشْوِيًّا بِنَارٍ، رَأْسَهُ مَعَ أَكَارِعِهِ وَجَوْفِهِ. 10 وَلا تُبْقُوا مِنْهُ إِلَى الصَّبَاحِ، بَلْ تُحْرِقُونَ كُلَّ مَا تَبَقَّى مِنْهُ إِلَى الصَّبَاحِ بِالنَّارِ. 11 تَأْكُلُونَهُ بِعَجَلَةٍ وَأَحْقَاؤُكُمْ مَشْدُودَةٌ، وَأَحْذِيَتُكُمْ فِي أَرْجُلِكُمْ، وَعِصِيُّكُمْ فِي أَيْدِيكُمْ. فَيَكُونُ هَذَا فِصْحاً لِلرَّبِّ. 12 فَفِي هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ أَجْتَازُ فِي بِلادِ مِصْرَ وَأَقْتُلُ كُلَّ بِكْرٍ فِيهَا مِنَ النَّاسِ وَالْبَهَائِمِ وَأُجْرِي قَضَاءً عَلَى كُلِّ آلِهَةِ الْمِصْرِيِّينَ. أَنَا هُوَ الرَّبُّ. 13 أَمَّا أَنْتُمْ فَإِنَّ الدَّمَ الَّذِي عَلَى بُيُوتِكُمُ الْمُقِيمِينَ فِيهَا يَكُونُ الْعَلامَةَ الَّتِي تُمَيِّزُكُمْ، فَأَرَى الدَّمَ وَأَعْبُرُ عَنْكُمْ، فَلا تَنْزِلُ بِكُمْ بَلِيَّةُ الْهَلاكِ حِينَ أَبْتَلِي بِها أَرْضَ مِصْرَ. 14 وَيَكُونُ لَكُمْ هَذَا الْيَوْمُ تَذْكَاراً تَحْتَفِلُونَ بِهِ عِيداً لِلرَّبِّ، فَرِيضَةً أَبَدِيَّةً تَحْتَفِلُونَ بِهِ فِي أَجْيَالِكُمْ.

15 سَبْعَةَ أَيَّامٍ تَحْتَفِلُونَ، تَأْكُلُونَ فِيهَا فَطِيراً، تُخْلُونَ بُيُوتَكُمْ مِنَ الْخَمِيرِ فِي الْيَوْمِ الأَوَّلِ، فَإِنَّ كُلَّ مَنْ أَكَلَ خَمِيراً فِي الْيَوْمِ الأَوَّلِ إِلَى الْيَوْمِ السَّابِعِ، تُبَادُ تِلْكَ النَّفْسُ مِنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ. 16 وَتُقِيمُونَ فِي الْيَوْمِ الأَوَّلِ حَفْلاً مُقَدَّساً، وَكَذَلِكَ فِي الْيَوْمِ السَّابِعِ. لَا يُجْرَى فِيهِمَا عَمَلٌ مَا إلّا تَجْهِيزُ طَعَامِ الأَكْلِ. هَذَا كُلُّ مَا تَعْمَلُونَهُ. 17 وَتَحْتَفِلُونَ بِعِيدِ الْفَطِيرِ، لأَنَّنِي فِي هَذَا الْيَوْمِ عَيْنِهِ أَخْرَجْتُ أَجْنَادَكُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِ مِصْرَ، فَاحْتَفِلُوا بِهَذَا الْيَوْمِ فَرِيضَةً أَبَدِيَّةً فِي أَجْيَالِكُمُ الْمُقْبِلَةِ. 18 وَمُنْذُ مَسَاءِ الْيَوْمِ الرَّابِعَ عَشَرَ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ الأَوَّلِ وَحَتَّى مَسَاءِ الْيَوْمِ الْحَادِي وَالعِشْرِينَ مِنْهُ تَأْكُلُونَ فَطِيراً. 19 سَبْعَةَ أَيَّامٍ تَخْلُو بُيُوتُكُمْ مِنَ الْخَمِيرِ فَإِنَّ كُلَّ مَنْ أَكَلَ خُبْزاً مُخْتَمِراً يُبَادُ مِنْ جَمَاعَةِ إِسْرَائِيلَ، الْغَرِيبُ وَالمُوَاطِنُ عَلَى حَدٍّ سَوَاءَ. 20 لَا تَأْكُلُوا شَيْئاً مُخْتَمِراً، بَلْ فِي كُلِّ مَسَاكِنِكُمْ تَأْكُلُونَ فَطِيراً».

21 ثُمَّ اسْتَدْعَى مُوسَى كُلَّ شُيُوخِ إِسْرَائِيلَ وَقَالَ لَهُمْ: «اذْهَبُوا وَانْتَقُوا حُمْلاناً بِحَسَبِ عَائِلاتِكُمْ وَاذْبَحُوا حَمَلَ الْفِصْحِ. 22 ثُمَّ خُذُوا بَاقَةَ زُوفَا وَاغْمِسُوهَا فِي الدَّمِ الَّذِي تَصَفَّى فِي الإِنَاءِ وَاطْلُوا بِهِ عَتَبَةَ الْبَابِ الْعُلْيَا وَالْقَائِمَتَيْنِ، وَلا يَخْرُجُ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ حَتَّى الصَّبَاحِ. 23 لأَنَّ الرَّبَّ سَيَجْتَازُ لَيْلاً لِيُهْلِكَ الْمِصْرِيِّينَ. فَحِينَ يَرَى الدَّمَ عَلَى الْعَتَبَةِ الْعُلْيَا وَالْقَائِمَتَيْنِ يَعْبُرُ عَنِ الْبَابِ وَلا يَدَعُ الْمُهْلِكَ يَدْخُلُ بُيُوتَكُمْ لِيَضْرِبَكُمْ. 24 فَتُمَارِسُونَ هَذَا الأَمْرَ فَرِيضَةً لَكُمْ وَلأَوْلادِكُمْ إِلَى الأَبَدِ. 25 وَعِنْدَمَا تَدْخُلُونَ الأَرْضَ الَّتِي وَعَدَ الرَّبُّ أَنْ يَهَبَهَا لَكُمْ، فَإِنَّكُمْ تُمَارِسُونَ هَذِهِ الْفَرِيضَةَ. 26 وَيَكُونُ حِينَ يَسْأَلُكُمْ أَبْنَاؤُكُمْ: مَاذَا تَعْنِي هَذِهِ الْفَرِيضَةُ لَكُمْ؟ 27 تُجِيبُونَهُمْ آنَئِذٍ: إِنَّهَا ذَبِيحَةُ فِصْحٍ لِلرَّبِّ الَّذِي عَبَرَ عَنْ بُيُوتِ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ فِي مِصْرَ عِنْدَمَا أَهْلَكَ الْمِصْرِيِّينَ، وَأَنْقَذَ بُيُوتَنَا». فَحَنَى الشَّعْبُ رُؤُوسَهُمْ سَاجِدِينَ. 28 فَمَضَى بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ وَفَعَلُوا تَمَاماً كَمَا أَمَرَ الرَّبُّ مُوسَى وَهَرُونَ.

29 وَفِي مُنْتَصَفِ اللَّيْلِ أَهْلَكَ الرَّبُّ كُلَّ بِكْرٍ فِي بِلادِ مِصْرَ، مِنْ بِكْرِ فِرْعَوْنَ الْمُتَرَبِّعِ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ إِلَى بِكْرِ الْحَبِيسِ فِي السِّجْنِ، وَأَبْكَارَ الْبَهَائِمِ جَمِيعاً أَيْضاً. 30 فَاسْتَيْقَظَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَحَاشِيَتُهُ وَجَمِيعُ الْمِصْرِيِّينَ وَإذَا عَوِيلٌ عَظِيمٌ فِي أَرْضِ مِصْرَ، لأَنَّهُ لَمْ يُوْجَدْ بَيْتٌ لَيْسَ فِيهِ مَيْتٌ. 31 فَاسْتَدْعَى مُوسَى وَهَرُونَ لَيْلاً قَائِلاً: «قُومُوا وَاخْرُجُوا مِنْ بَيْنِ الشَّعْبِ أَنْتُمَا وَبَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ، وَانْطَلِقُوا اعْبُدُوا الرَّبَّ كَمَا طَلَبْتُمْ، 32 وَخُذُوا مَعَكُمْ غَنَمَكُمْ وَبَقَرَكُمْ كَمَا سَأَلْتُمْ وَامْضُوا وَبَارِكُونِي أَيْضاً». 33 وَأَلَحَّ الْمِصْرِيُّونَ عَلَى الشَّعْبِ لِيُسْرِعُوا فِي الارْتِحَالِ عَنِ الْبِلادِ قَائِلِينَ: «لِئَلّا نَمُوتَ جَمِيعاً».

الخروج

34 فَصَرَّ الشَّعْبُ فِي ثِيَابِهِمْ مَعَاجِنَهُمْ وَعَجِينَهُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَخْتَمِرَ، وَحَمَلُوهَا عَلَى أَكْتَافِهِمْ، 35 وَطَلَبُوا مِنَ الْمِصْرِيِّينَ آنِيَةَ فِضَّةٍ وَذَهَباً وَثِيَاباً بِحَسَبِ قَوْلِ مُوسَى. 36 وَجَعَلَ الرَّبُّ الشَّعْبَ يَحْظَى بِرِضَى الْمِصْرِيِّينَ، فَأَعْطَوْهُمْ كُلَّ مَا طَلَبُوهُ، فَغَنِمُوا مِنَ الْمِصْرِيِّينَ.

37 وَارْتَحَلَ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ مِنْ رَعَمْسِيسَ إِلَى سُكُّوتَ فَكَانُوا نَحْوَ سِتِّ مِئَةِ أَلْفٍ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ المُشَاةِ مَاعَدَا النِّسَاءَ وَالأَوْلادَ. 38 وَكَذَلِكَ انْضَمَّ إِلَيْهِمْ حَشْدٌ كَبِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ، مَعَ غَنَمٍ وَمَوَاشٍ وَقُطْعَانٍ كَثِيرَةٍ. 39 ثُمَّ خَبَزُوا الْعَجِينَ الَّذِي أَخْرَجُوهُ مَعَهُمْ مِنْ مِصْرَ خُبْزَ مَلَّةٍ، لأَنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ مُخْتَمِراً، إذْ أَنَّهُمْ طُرِدُوا مِنْ مِصْرَ وَلَمْ يَقْدِرُوا أَنْ يَتَأَخَّرُوا فَمَا أَعَدُّوا لأَنْفُسِهِمْ زَاداً.

40 وَكَانَتْ مُدَّةُ غُرْبَةِ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ الَّتِي أَقَامُوهَا فِي مِصْرَ أَرْبَعَ مِئَةٍ وَثَلاثِينَ سَنَةً. 41 وَفِي الْيَوْمِ الأَخِيرِ بِالذَّاتِ، فِي خِتَامِ أَرْبَعِ مِئَةٍ وَثَلاثِينَ سَنَةً خَرَجَ جَمِيعُ أَجْنَادِ الرَّبِّ مِنْ أَرْضِ مِصْرَ. 42 هِيَ لَيْلَةٌ تُكَرَّسُ لِلرَّبِّ إذْ أَخْرَجَهُمْ فِيهَا مِنْ أَرْضِ مِصْرَ. هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةُ هِيَ لِلرَّبِّ، يُكَرِّسُهَا بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ فِي جَمِيعِ أَجْيَالِهِمْ.

43 وَقَالَ الرَّبُّ لِمُوسَى وَهَرُونَ: «هَذِهِ هِيَ مَرَاسِيمُ الْفِصْحِ: لَا يَأْكُلُ غَرِيبٌ مِنْهُ. 44 كُلُّ عَبْدٍ مُشْتَرَى بِفِضَّةٍ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ بَعْدَ أَنْ تَخْتِنَهُ. 45 النَّزِيلُ وَالأَجِيرُ لَا يَأْكُلانِ مِنْهُ. 46 يُؤْكَلُ فِي بَيْتٍ وَاحِدٍ فَلا تَحْمِلْ لَحْماً إِلَى خَارِجِ الْمَنْزِلِ، وَلا تَكْسِرْ مِنْهُ عَظْماً. 47 وَعَلَى كُلِّ جَمَاعَةِ إِسْرَائِيلَ أَنْ تَحْتَفِلَ بِهِ. 48 وَإذَا عَزَمَ غَرِيبٌ مُقِيمٌ بَيْنَكُمْ أَنْ يَحْتَفِلَ بِفِصْحِ الرَّبِّ فَلْيُخْتَنْ كُلُّ ذَكَرٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ، ثُمَّ يَحْتَفِلُ بِهِ، فَيَكُونُ آنَئِذٍ كَمَوْلُودِ الأَرْضِ. لَا يَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ أَيُّ ذَكَرٍ أَغْلَفَ. 49 فَتَسُودُ هَذِهِ الشَّرِيعَةُ عَلَى الْمُوَاطِنِ وَالدَّخِيلِ الْمُقِيمِ بَيْنَكُمْ». 50 فَفَعَلَ جَمِيعُ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ تَمَاماً كَمَا أَمَرَ الرَّبُّ مُوسَى وَهَرُونَ.

51 فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ عَيْنِهِ أَخْرَجَ الرَّبُّ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِنْ أَرْضِ مِصْرَ بِحَسَبِ فِرَقِ عَشَائِرِهِمْ.

The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread(A)

12 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, 2 “This month is to be for you the first month,(B) the first month of your year. 3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb[a](C) for his family, one for each household.(D) 4 If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5 The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect,(E) and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month,(F) when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.(G) 7 Then they are to take some of the blood(H) and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. 8 That same night(I) they are to eat the meat roasted(J) over the fire, along with bitter herbs,(K) and bread made without yeast.(L) 9 Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire—with the head, legs and internal organs.(M) 10 Do not leave any of it till morning;(N) if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste;(O) it is the Lord’s Passover.(P)

12 “On that same night I will pass through(Q) Egypt and strike down(R) every firstborn(S) of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods(T) of Egypt. I am the Lord.(U) 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over(V) you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.(W)

14 “This is a day you are to commemorate;(X) for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord—a lasting ordinance.(Y) 15 For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast.(Z) On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh must be cut off(AA) from Israel. 16 On the first day hold a sacred assembly, and another one on the seventh day. Do no work(AB) at all on these days, except to prepare food for everyone to eat; that is all you may do.

17 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(AC) because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt.(AD) Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.(AE) 18 In the first month(AF) you are to eat bread made without yeast, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day. 19 For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And anyone, whether foreigner(AG) or native-born, who eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off(AH) from the community of Israel. 20 Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live,(AI) you must eat unleavened bread.”(AJ)

21 Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover(AK) lamb. 22 Take a bunch of hyssop,(AL) dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood(AM) on the top and on both sides of the doorframe. None of you shall go out of the door of your house until morning. 23 When the Lord goes through the land to strike(AN) down the Egyptians, he will see the blood(AO) on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over(AP) that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer(AQ) to enter your houses and strike you down.

24 “Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance(AR) for you and your descendants. 25 When you enter the land(AS) that the Lord will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. 26 And when your children(AT) ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27 then tell them, ‘It is the Passover(AU) sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’”(AV) Then the people bowed down and worshiped.(AW) 28 The Israelites did just what the Lord commanded(AX) Moses and Aaron.

29 At midnight(AY) the Lord(AZ) struck down all the firstborn(BA) in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock(BB) as well. 30 Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing(BC) in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.

The Exodus

31 During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship(BD) the Lord as you have requested. 32 Take your flocks and herds,(BE) as you have said, and go. And also bless(BF) me.”

33 The Egyptians urged the people to hurry(BG) and leave(BH) the country. “For otherwise,” they said, “we will all die!”(BI) 34 So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs(BJ) wrapped in clothing. 35 The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold(BK) and for clothing.(BL) 36 The Lord had made the Egyptians favorably disposed(BM) toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered(BN) the Egyptians.

37 The Israelites journeyed from Rameses(BO) to Sukkoth.(BP) There were about six hundred thousand men(BQ) on foot, besides women and children. 38 Many other people(BR) went up with them, and also large droves of livestock, both flocks and herds. 39 With the dough the Israelites had brought from Egypt, they baked loaves of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out(BS) of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.

40 Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt[b] was 430 years.(BT) 41 At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord’s divisions(BU) left Egypt.(BV) 42 Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the Lord for the generations to come.(BW)

Passover Restrictions

43 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “These are the regulations for the Passover meal:(BX)

“No foreigner(BY) may eat it. 44 Any slave you have bought may eat it after you have circumcised(BZ) him, 45 but a temporary resident or a hired worker(CA) may not eat it.

46 “It must be eaten inside the house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones.(CB) 47 The whole community of Israel must celebrate it.

48 “A foreigner residing among you who wants to celebrate the Lord’s Passover must have all the males in his household circumcised; then he may take part like one born in the land.(CC) No uncircumcised(CD) male may eat it. 49 The same law applies both to the native-born and to the foreigner(CE) residing among you.”

50 All the Israelites did just what the Lord had commanded(CF) Moses and Aaron. 51 And on that very day the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt(CG) by their divisions.(CH)

12 Khi còn ở Ai-cập, CHÚA có phán với Môi-se và A-rôn: 2 “Tháng này sẽ được kể là tháng giêng, tức là tháng thứ nhất trong năm. 3 Con hãy ra lệnh cho toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên: vào mồng mười tháng này mỗi người đàn ông phải bắt một con cừu con cho gia đình mình, mỗi gia đình một con cừu con. 4 Nếu gia đình nào có ít người không thể ăn hết một cừu con thì phải chia sẻ với người láng giềng gần nhất, tính thế nào cho đủ số người ăn. Các con cũng ước tính số lượng thịt cần thiết cho mỗi người ăn. 5 Con vật các con chọn trong bầy cừu hay bầy dê phải là con đực, đúng một tuổi, không tì vết. 6 Các con vật này phải được chăm sóc cho đến ngày mười bốn tháng này, là ngày toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đem chúng ra giết vào lúc chiều tối. 7 Rồi họ sẽ lấy huyết cừu đem bôi trên thanh ngang và trên hai thanh dọc của khung cửa vào nhà, là nơi sẽ ăn thịt cừu. 8 Nội đêm đó họ sẽ ăn thịt cừu đã quay trên lửa với rau đắng và bánh không men. 9 Đừng ăn thịt sống hay thịt luộc, nhưng phải đem quay cả con cừu trên lửa, với cái đầu, chân và bộ lòng. 10 Đừng để thừa lại cho đến sáng mai; nếu còn thừa chút gì, hãy đem đốt hết. 11 Đây là cách các con ăn thịt đó; phải nai nịt gọn gàng, chân mang dép và tay cầm gậy. Các con phải ăn vội vàng; đó là lúc CHÚA Vượt Qua.

12 Trong đêm ấy, Ta sẽ vượt qua khắp xứ Ai-cập và giết hết các con đầu lòng của loài người cũng như của các loài súc vật, và Ta cũng sẽ đoán phạt các thần của Ai-cập. Ta là CHÚA. 13 Huyết bôi trên cửa là dấu hiệu của nhà các con ở và khi Ta thấy huyết, Ta sẽ vượt qua, và bệnh dịch sát hại sẽ không đụng đến các con trong khi ta hành hại người Ai-cập.

14 Đây là ngày các con phải kỷ niệm; từ thế hệ này đến thế hệ khác, các con phải tổ chức lễ này cho CHÚA. Đây là mạng lệnh đời đời. 15 Trong bảy ngày, các con phải ăn bánh không men. Vào ngày thứ nhất, các con phải đem hết men ra khỏi nhà, vì ai ăn bất cứ món gì có men từ ngày thứ nhất cho đến ngày thứ bảy sẽ bị khai trừ ra khỏi Y-sơ-ra-ên. 16 Vào ngày thứ nhất các con phải tổ chức một cuộc hội họp thánh; đến ngày thứ bảy cũng tổ chức một cuộc họp thánh nữa. Trong những ngày này, các con không được làm việc gì cả, ngoại trừ việc chuẩn bị thức ăn là việc duy nhất có thể làm.

17 Các con hãy tổ chức Lễ Bánh Không Men, vì vào chính ngày này Ta đem các đạo quân Y-sơ-ra-ên ra khỏi Ai-cập. Việc tổ chức lễ này là một mạng lệnh đời đời cho các thế hệ trong tương lai. 18 Từ tối ngày mười bốn cho đến tối ngày hai mươi mốt tháng giêng, các con phải ăn bánh không men. 19 Trong bảy ngày đó, không ai được giữ men trong nhà. Bất cứ người nào ăn món gì có men sẽ bị khai trừ khỏi hội chúng Y-sơ-ra-ên, dù là ngoại kiều hay người sinh trong xứ. 20 Đừng ăn món gì có men. Bất cứ sinh sống ở đâu, các con cũng phải ăn bánh không men.”

21 Môi-se triệu tập các bô lão Y-sơ-ra-ên lại và nói với họ: “Các ông phải lập tức đi chọn cừu con cho gia đình mình và giết nó để làm lễ Vượt Qua. 22 Hãy lấy một bó bài hương thảo, nhúng vào chậu huyết và đem bôi trên thanh ngang và hai thanh dọc của khung cửa. Không ai được ra khỏi nhà khi trời chưa sáng. 23 Khi CHÚA đi qua xứ để hình phạt người Ai-cập, Ngài sẽ vượt qua nhà nào khi thấy khung cửa nhà ấy có bôi huyết trên thanh ngang và hai thanh dọc. Ngài sẽ không cho phép đấng Hủy Diệt vào nhà để giết hại.

24 Phải vâng giữ các chỉ thị này như một mạng lệnh đời đời cho các ông và cho hậu tự các ông. 25 Cũng phải giữ Lễ này khi đã vào xứ CHÚA hứa sẽ ban cho. 26 Khi con cháu các ông hỏi: ‘Lễ này có ý nghĩa gì?’ 27 thì nói với chúng: ‘đây là lễ Vượt Qua cho CHÚA, để kỷ niệm ngày Ngài đã vượt qua nhà của dân Y-sơ-ra-ên khi còn ở trong xứ Ai-cập. Ngài vượt qua nhà của chúng ta trong khi giết hại người Ai-cập.’ ” Nghe xong, dân chúng cúi xuống và thờ phượng. 28 Rồi dân Y-sơ-ra-ên làm đúng theo mọi điều CHÚA đã phán dạy Môi-se và A-rôn.

29 Lúc nửa đêm, CHÚA giết hại tất cả các con đầu lòng trong xứ Ai-cập, từ thái tử con Pha-ra-ôn đang ngồi trên ngai cho đến con đầu lòng của tù nhân đang bị giam trong ngục, cả đến con đầu lòng của gia súc. 30 Pha-ra-ôn, quần thần và mọi người dân Ai-cập thức dậy lúc nửa đêm, có tiếng than khóc vang lên khắp nước vì không nhà nào mà không có người chết.

Xuất Hành

31 Ngay đêm ấy, Pha-ra-ôn cho triệu Môi-se và A-rôn đến và nói: “Hai ông và toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên hãy lìa khỏi chúng tôi! Các ông hãy đi thờ phượng CHÚA như điều hai ông đã xin. 32 Cũng dẫn theo cả bò cừu như các ông đã nói, rồi đi hết đi! Và cũng cầu phước cho chúng tôi với!” 33 Dân Ai-cập hối thúc người Y-sơ-ra-ên phải cấp tốc ra khỏi nước họ, vì nói rằng: “Nếu các ngươi không đi, chúng tôi sẽ chết hết!” 34 Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên lấy áo bọc thùng nhồi bột, với bột mới nhồi nhưng chưa kịp pha men, rồi vác lên vai mà đi. 35 Họ làm theo điều Môi-se đã dặn bảo và hỏi xin người Ai-cập các món bằng bạc và bằng vàng và cả quần áo nữa. 36 CHÚA làm cho người Ai-cập có cảm tình với họ và cho họ những thứ họ hỏi xin; như vậy, người Ai-cập bị họ bóc lột.

37 Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ra đi từ Ram-se đến Su-cốt, tổng số người đi độ sáu trăm ngàn người. Đây là số đàn ông, chưa kể đàn bà con nít. 38 Cũng có rất nhiều người ngoại tộc cùng đi, dẫn theo từng đàn gia súc rất lớn. 39 Với bột đã nhồi ở Ai-cập, họ làm bánh không men. Bột này nhồi không pha men vì họ bị đuổi đi gấp, không kịp chuẩn bị lương thực đi đường. 40 Thời gian dân Y-sơ-ra-ên cư ngụ trong xứ Ai-cập là bốn trăm ba mươi năm. 41 Đúng vào ngày cuối cùng của thời gian bốn trăm ba mươi năm ấy, các đạo quân của CHÚA rời khỏi Ai-cập. 42 Vì CHÚA đã rút dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ra khỏi Ai-cập vào đêm ấy, nên dân Y-sơ-ra-ên phải giữ đêm ấy làm kỷ niệm, từ thế hệ này đến thế hệ khác.

Các Quy Tắc Về Lễ Vượt Qua

43 CHÚA phán bảo Môi-se và A-rôn: “Đây là các quy tắc về lễ vượt qua: người ngoại quốc không được ăn lễ ấy. 44 Nô lệ các con đã mua chỉ được phép ăn lễ sau khi chịu cắt bì, 45 nhưng những kiều dân tạm trú và người làm mướn không được phép ăn. 46 Thịt phải ăn trong nhà và không được đem ra khỏi nhà, cũng không được làm gẫy một cái xương nào cả. 47 Toàn thể hội chúng Y-sơ-ra-ên phải dự lễ vượt qua. 48 Những ngoại kiều sống chung với người Y-sơ-ra-ên nếu muốn dự lễ vượt qua thì đàn ông phải chịu cắt bì; sau đó họ được phép ăn lễ như người sinh ra trong xứ. Đàn ông không chịu cắt bì không được phép ăn lễ. 49 Luật này áp dụng cho cả người sinh trong xứ lẫn người kiều ngụ.” 50 Tất cả dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đều làm theo điều CHÚA đã phán dạy Môi-se và A-rôn. 51 Trong chính ngày đó, CHÚA dẫn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ra khỏi Ai-cập, tùy theo các đạo quân của họ.
