The Plague of Locusts

10 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Come to Pharaoh, for (A)I have [a]hardened his heart and the heart of his servants with firmness, that I may [b]set these signs of Mine [c]among them, and (B)that you may recount in the [d]hearing of your son and of your grandson, how I dealt severely with the Egyptians, and how I [e]put My signs among them, (C)that you may know that I am Yahweh.”

Then Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to (D)humble yourself before Me? (E)Let My people go, that they may serve Me. For if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your territory. And they shall cover the [f]surface of the land, so that no one will be able to see the land. (F)They will also eat the rest of what has escaped—what remains for you from the hail—and they will eat every tree which sprouts for you out of the field. Then (G)your houses and the houses of all your servants and the houses of all the Egyptians shall be filled, something which neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen, from the day that they [g]came upon the earth until this day.’” And he turned and went out from Pharaoh. (H)And Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “How long will this man be (I)a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve Yahweh their God. Do you not yet know that Egypt is destroyed?” So Moses and Aaron (J)were brought back to Pharaoh, and he said to them, “(K)Go, serve Yahweh your God! [h]Who are the ones that are going?” And Moses said, “(L)We shall go with our young and our old; with our sons and our daughters, (M)with our flocks and our herds we shall go, for it is a feast of Yahweh for us.” 10 Then he said to them, “Thus may Yahweh be with you, [i]if ever I let you and your little ones go! See, for evil is [j]on your faces. 11 Not so! Go now, the men among you, and serve Yahweh, for [k]that is what you are seeking.” So (N)they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.

12 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “(O)Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up on the land of Egypt and (P)eat every plant of the land, all that the hail has left remaining.” 13 So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and Yahweh directed an east wind on the land all that day and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind [l]brought the (Q)locusts. 14 (R)And the locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and rested on all the territory of Egypt; they were very heavy. There had never been so many [m]locusts, nor would there be so many [n]again. 15 For they covered the surface of the whole land, so that the land was darkened; and they (S)ate every plant of the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Thus nothing green was left on tree or plant of the field through all the land of Egypt. 16 Then Pharaoh hurriedly (T)called for Moses and Aaron, and he said, “(U)I have sinned against Yahweh your God and against you. 17 So now, please forgive my sin only this once and (V)entreat Yahweh your God, that He would only cause this death to depart from me.” 18 (W)And he went out from Pharaoh and entreated Yahweh. 19 So Yahweh changed the wind to a very strong west wind which took up the locusts and drove them into the [o]Red Sea; not one locust remained in all the territory of Egypt. 20 But (X)Yahweh [p]hardened Pharaoh’s heart with strength, and he did not let the sons of Israel go.

The Eighth Plague: Locusts

10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his officials, in order that I may show these signs of mine among them(A) and that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I have made fools of the Egyptians and what signs I have done among them—so that you may know that I am the Lord.”(B)

So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews: How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may serve me.(C) For if you refuse to let my people go, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country.(D) They shall cover the surface of the land, so that no one will be able to see the land. They shall devour the last remnant left you after the hail, and they shall devour every tree of yours that grows in the field.(E) They shall fill your houses and the houses of all your officials and of all the Egyptians—something that neither your parents nor your grandparents have seen, from the day they came on earth to this day.” Then he turned and went out from Pharaoh.(F)

Pharaoh’s officials said to him, “How long shall this fellow be a snare to us? Send the people away, so that they may serve the Lord their God. Do you not yet understand that Egypt is ruined?”(G) So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh, and he said to them, “Go, serve the Lord your God! But which ones are to go?”(H) Moses said, “We will go with our young and our old; we will go with our sons and daughters and with our flocks and herds, because we have the Lord’s festival to celebrate.”(I) 10 He said to them, “The Lord indeed will be with you, if ever I let your little ones go with you! Plainly, you have some evil purpose in mind. 11 No, never! Your men may go and serve the Lord, for that is what you are asking.” And they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.(J)

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt, so that the locusts may come upon it and eat every plant in the land, all that the hail has left.”(K) 13 So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought an east wind upon the land all that day and all that night. When morning came, the east wind had brought the locusts. 14 The locusts came upon all the land of Egypt and settled on the whole country of Egypt, such a dense swarm of locusts as had never been before nor ever shall be again.(L) 15 They covered the surface of the whole land, so that the land was black, and they ate all the plants in the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Nothing green was left on the trees or on the plants in the fields, in all the land of Egypt.(M) 16 Pharaoh hurriedly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you.(N) 17 Do forgive my sin this once, and pray to the Lord your God that at the least he remove this deadly thing from me.”(O) 18 So he went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. 19 The Lord changed the wind into a very strong west wind, which lifted the locusts and drove them into the Red Sea;[a] not a single locust was left in all the country of Egypt. 20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go.(P)
