A Plague of Locusts
10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Return to Pharaoh and make your demands again. I have made him and his officials stubborn[a] so I can display my miraculous signs among them. 2 I’ve also done it so you can tell your children and grandchildren about how I made a mockery of the Egyptians and about the signs I displayed among them—and so you will know that I am the Lord.”
3 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: How long will you refuse to submit to me? Let my people go, so they can worship me. 4 If you refuse, watch out! For tomorrow I will bring a swarm of locusts on your country. 5 They will cover the land so that you won’t be able to see the ground. They will devour what little is left of your crops after the hailstorm, including all the trees growing in the fields. 6 They will overrun your palaces and the homes of your officials and all the houses in Egypt. Never in the history of Egypt have your ancestors seen a plague like this one!” And with that, Moses turned and left Pharaoh.
7 Pharaoh’s officials now came to Pharaoh and appealed to him. “How long will you let this man hold us hostage? Let the men go to worship the Lord their God! Don’t you realize that Egypt lies in ruins?”
8 So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. “All right,” he told them, “go and worship the Lord your God. But who exactly will be going with you?”
9 Moses replied, “We will all go—young and old, our sons and daughters, and our flocks and herds. We must all join together in celebrating a festival to the Lord.”
10 Pharaoh retorted, “The Lord will certainly need to be with you if I let you take your little ones! I can see through your evil plan. 11 Never! Only the men may go and worship the Lord, since that is what you requested.” And Pharaoh threw them out of the palace.
12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Raise your hand over the land of Egypt to bring on the locusts. Let them cover the land and devour every plant that survived the hailstorm.”
13 So Moses raised his staff over Egypt, and the Lord caused an east wind to blow over the land all that day and through the night. When morning arrived, the east wind had brought the locusts. 14 And the locusts swarmed over the whole land of Egypt, settling in dense swarms from one end of the country to the other. It was the worst locust plague in Egyptian history, and there has never been another one like it. 15 For the locusts covered the whole country and darkened the land. They devoured every plant in the fields and all the fruit on the trees that had survived the hailstorm. Not a single leaf was left on the trees and plants throughout the land of Egypt.
16 Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron. “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you,” he confessed. 17 “Forgive my sin, just this once, and plead with the Lord your God to take away this death from me.”
18 So Moses left Pharaoh’s court and pleaded with the Lord. 19 The Lord responded by shifting the wind, and the strong west wind blew the locusts into the Red Sea.[b] Not a single locust remained in all the land of Egypt. 20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart again, so he refused to let the people go.
A Plague of Darkness
21 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Lift your hand toward heaven, and the land of Egypt will be covered with a darkness so thick you can feel it.” 22 So Moses lifted his hand to the sky, and a deep darkness covered the entire land of Egypt for three days. 23 During all that time the people could not see each other, and no one moved. But there was light as usual where the people of Israel lived.
24 Finally, Pharaoh called for Moses. “Go and worship the Lord,” he said. “But leave your flocks and herds here. You may even take your little ones with you.”
25 “No,” Moses said, “you must provide us with animals for sacrifices and burnt offerings to the Lord our God. 26 All our livestock must go with us, too; not a hoof can be left behind. We must choose our sacrifices for the Lord our God from among these animals. And we won’t know how we are to worship the Lord until we get there.”
27 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart once more, and he would not let them go. 28 “Get out of here!” Pharaoh shouted at Moses. “I’m warning you. Never come back to see me again! The day you see my face, you will die!”
29 “Very well,” Moses replied. “I will never see your face again.”

10 El Señor le dijo a Moisés:
—Ve a ver al faraón, pues yo he hecho que él y sus funcionarios se pongan tercos para mostrarles las grandes maravillas que yo puedo hacer, 2 y para que tú les cuentes a tus hijos y nietos la forma en que me burlé de los egipcios, y las grandes maravillas que hice entre ellos. Así sabrán ustedes que yo soy el Señor.
3 Moisés y Aarón fueron a ver al faraón, y le dijeron:
—Así dice el Señor, el Dios de los hebreos: “¿Hasta cuándo te negarás a humillarte delante de mí? Deja ir a mi pueblo, para que me adore; 4 porque si te sigues oponiendo a dejarlo ir, mañana haré que vengan langostas sobre tu país, 5 las cuales cubrirán la tierra en tal cantidad que no se podrá ver el suelo. Se comerán lo poco que haya quedado después del granizo, y se comerán también todos los árboles del campo. 6 Llenarán tus palacios, y las casas de tus funcionarios, y las casas de todos los egipcios. ¡Será algo como nunca vieron tus padres ni tus abuelos desde sus días hasta los nuestros!”
Al terminar de hablar, Moisés dio media vuelta y salió del palacio del faraón. 7 Entonces los funcionarios del faraón dijeron:
—¿Hasta cuándo nos va a causar problemas este hombre? Deje Su Majestad que esa gente vaya a adorar a su Dios, el Señor. ¿Todavía no se da cuenta Su Majestad de que Egipto está arruinado?
8 El faraón mandó llamar otra vez a Moisés y Aarón, y les dijo:
—Vayan a adorar al Señor su Dios. Pero antes díganme quiénes van a ir.
9 Moisés contestó:
—Tenemos que ir con nuestros niños y ancianos, hijos e hijas, y con nuestras ovejas y vacas, pues para nosotros es una gran fiesta del Señor.
10 Pero el faraón les dijo:
—¡Claramente se ven sus malas intenciones! ¿Y ustedes creen que el Señor los va a acompañar, y que voy a dejar que ustedes y sus niños se vayan? 11 Pues no va a ser así. Vayan ustedes, los hombres adultos, a adorar al Señor, ya que eso es lo que quieren.
Y el faraón ordenó que los echaran de su presencia. 12 Pero el Señor le dijo a Moisés:
—Extiende tu brazo sobre Egipto, para que vengan las langostas y acaben con todas las plantas del país y con todo lo que quedó después del granizo.
13 Moisés extendió su brazo sobre Egipto, y el Señor hizo venir un viento del este que sopló sobre el país todo el día y toda la noche. Al día siguiente, el viento del este había traído las langostas, 14 las cuales invadieron todo el país. Nunca antes hubo, ni habrá después, tantas langostas como en aquel día, 15 pues cubrieron la tierra en tal cantidad que no se podía ver el suelo, y se comieron todas las plantas y toda la fruta que había quedado en los árboles después del granizo. No quedó nada verde en ningún lugar de Egipto: ni en el campo ni en los árboles.
16 El faraón mandó llamar inmediatamente a Moisés y Aarón, y les dijo:
—He pecado contra el Señor su Dios, y contra ustedes, 17 pero les ruego que tan sólo esta vez perdonen mi pecado, y que oren por mí al Señor su Dios, para que por lo menos aleje de mí esta plaga mortal.
18 En cuanto Moisés salió del palacio del faraón, oró al Señor. 19 Entonces el Señor cambió el rumbo del viento, y lo convirtió en un fuerte viento del oeste que se llevó las langostas y las echó en el Mar Rojo. No quedó en todo Egipto una sola langosta. 20 Pero el Señor hizo que el faraón se pusiera terco y que no dejara ir a los israelitas.
La plaga de la oscuridad
21 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Moisés:
—Extiende tu brazo hacia el cielo, para que en todo Egipto haya una oscuridad tan espesa que hasta se pueda tocar.
22 Moisés levantó su brazo hacia el cielo y hubo una oscuridad tan grande en todo Egipto 23 que, durante tres días, nadie podía ver a su vecino ni moverse de su lugar. En cambio, en todas las casas de los israelitas había luz.
24 Entonces el faraón mandó llamar a Moisés, y le dijo:
—Vayan a adorar al Señor, y llévense también a sus hijos; pero dejen aquí sus ovejas y sus vacas.
25 Pero Moisés contestó:
—Al contrario, tú mismo nos vas a dar los animales que vamos a sacrificar y quemar en honor del Señor nuestro Dios. 26 Además, nuestros ganados irán con nosotros. Ni un solo animal debe quedarse, porque tenemos que escoger algunos de ellos para rendir culto al Señor. Mientras no lleguemos allá, no sabremos qué vamos a necesitar para adorar al Señor.
27 Pero el Señor hizo que el faraón se pusiera terco y que no los dejara ir. 28 Además el faraón le dijo a Moisés:
—Vete de aquí, y cuídate bien de no venir a verme otra vez, porque el día que vuelvas a presentarte ante mí, morirás.
29 Y Moisés contestó:
—Bien dicho. No volveré a verte.

10 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs before him:
2 And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son's son, what things I have wrought in Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that ye may know how that I am the Lord.
3 And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me.
4 Else, if thou refuse to let my people go, behold, to morrow will I bring the locusts into thy coast:
5 And they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field:
6 And they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians; which neither thy fathers, nor thy fathers' fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day. And he turned himself, and went out from Pharaoh.
7 And Pharaoh's servants said unto him, How long shall this man be a snare unto us? let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God: knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?
8 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh: and he said unto them, Go, serve the Lord your God: but who are they that shall go?
9 And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the Lord.
10 And he said unto them, Let the Lord be so with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones: look to it; for evil is before you.
11 Not so: go now ye that are men, and serve the Lord; for that ye did desire. And they were driven out from Pharaoh's presence.
12 And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail hath left.
13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.
14 And the locust went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt: very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such.
15 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.
16 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste; and he said, I have sinned against the Lord your God, and against you.
17 Now therefore forgive, I pray thee, my sin only this once, and intreat the Lord your God, that he may take away from me this death only.
18 And he went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the Lord.
19 And the Lord turned a mighty strong west wind, which took away the locusts, and cast them into the Red sea; there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt.
20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go.
21 And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.
22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days:
23 They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
24 And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the Lord; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you.
25 And Moses said, Thou must give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice unto the Lord our God.
26 Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the Lord our God; and we know not with what we must serve the Lord, until we come thither.
27 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go.
28 And Pharaoh said unto him, Get thee from me, take heed to thyself, see my face no more; for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die.
29 And Moses said, Thou hast spoken well, I will see thy face again no more.
