Israel’s Suffering in Egypt
1 Now (A)these are the names of the children of Israel who came to Egypt; each man and his household came with Jacob: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; 4 Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 5 All those [a]who were descendants of Jacob were (B)seventy[b] persons (for Joseph was in Egypt already). 6 And (C)Joseph died, all his brothers, and all that generation. 7 (D)But the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and [c]grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.
8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, (E)who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people, “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and (F)mightier than we; 10 (G)come, let us (H)deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them (I)to afflict them with their (J)burdens. And they built for Pharaoh (K)supply cities, Pithom (L)and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were in dread of the children of Israel. 13 So the Egyptians made the children of Israel (M)serve with [d]rigor. 14 And they (N)made their lives bitter with hard bondage—(O)in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor.
15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the (P)Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah; 16 and he said, “When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a (Q)son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” 17 But the midwives (R)feared God, and did not do (S)as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive. 18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive?”
19 And (T)the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they [e]are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them.”
20 (U)Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and [f]grew very mighty. 21 And so it was, because the midwives feared God, (V)that He [g]provided households for them.
22 So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, (W)“Every son who is [h]born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”
Moses Is Born(X)
2 And (Y)a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. 2 So the woman conceived and bore a son. And (Z)when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. 3 But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of (AA)bulrushes for him, daubed it with (AB)asphalt and (AC)pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds (AD)by the river’s bank. 4 (AE)And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him.
5 Then the (AF)daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river. And her maidens walked along the riverside; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it. 6 And when she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby wept. So she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”
8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the maiden went and called the child’s mother. 9 Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became (AG)her son. So she called his name [i]Moses, saying, “Because I drew him out of the water.”
Moses Flees to Midian(AH)
11 Now it came to pass in those days, (AI)when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brethren and looked at their burdens. And he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 So he looked this way and that way, and when he saw no one, he (AJ)killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 And (AK)when he went out the second day, behold, two Hebrew men (AL)were fighting, and he said to the one who did the wrong, “Why are you striking your companion?”
14 Then he said, (AM)“Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?”
So Moses (AN)feared and said, “Surely this thing is known!” 15 When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But (AO)Moses fled from [j]the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of (AP)Midian; and he sat down by (AQ)a well.
16 (AR)Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. (AS)And they came and drew water, and they filled the (AT)troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 Then the (AU)shepherds came and (AV)drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and (AW)watered their flock.
18 When they came to (AX)Reuel[k] their father, (AY)he said, “How is it that you have come so soon today?”
19 And they said, “An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and he also drew enough water for us and watered the flock.”
20 So he said to his daughters, “And where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may (AZ)eat bread.”
21 Then Moses was content to live with the man, and he gave (BA)Zipporah his daughter to Moses. 22 And she bore him a son. He called his name (BB)Gershom,[l] for he said, “I have been (BC)a [m]stranger in a foreign land.”
23 Now it happened (BD)in the process of time that the king of Egypt died. Then the children of Israel (BE)groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out; and (BF)their cry came up to God because of the bondage. 24 So God (BG)heard their groaning, and God (BH)remembered His (BI)covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 And God (BJ)looked upon the children of Israel, and God (BK)acknowledged them.
Moses at the Burning Bush(BL)
3 Now Moses was tending the flock of (BM)Jethro his father-in-law, (BN)the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to (BO)Horeb, (BP)the mountain of God. 2 And (BQ)the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. 3 Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this (BR)great sight, why the bush does not burn.”
4 So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called (BS)to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
5 Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. (BT)Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” 6 Moreover He said, (BU)“I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for (BV)he was afraid to look upon God.
7 And the Lord said: (BW)“I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry (BX)because of their taskmasters, (BY)for I know their [n]sorrows. 8 So (BZ)I have come down to (CA)deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land (CB)to a good and large land, to a land (CC)flowing with milk and honey, to the place of (CD)the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore, behold, (CE)the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the (CF)oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 (CG)Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”
11 But Moses said to God, (CH)“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”
12 So He said, (CI)“I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a (CJ)sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”
13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”
14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, (CK)‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” 15 Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is (CL)My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’ 16 Go and (CM)gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, (CN)“I have surely visited you and seen what is done to you in Egypt; 17 and I have said (CO)I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.” ’ 18 Then (CP)they will heed your voice; and (CQ)you shall come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt; and you shall say to him, ‘The Lord God of the Hebrews has (CR)met with us; and now, please, let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I am sure that the king of Egypt (CS)will not let you go, no, not even by a mighty hand. 20 So I will (CT)stretch out My hand and strike Egypt with (CU)all My wonders which I will do in its midst; and (CV)after that he will let you go. 21 And (CW)I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be, when you go, that you shall not go empty-handed. 22 (CX)But every woman shall ask of her neighbor, namely, of her who dwells near her house, (CY)articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing; and you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So (CZ)you shall plunder the Egyptians.”
Miraculous Signs for Pharaoh
4 Then Moses answered and said, “But suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice; suppose they say, ‘The Lord has not appeared to you.’ ”
2 So the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?”
He said, “A rod.”
3 And He said, “Cast it on the ground.” So he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it. 4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail” (and he reached out his hand and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand), 5 “that they may (DA)believe that the (DB)Lord God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”
6 Furthermore the Lord said to him, “Now put your hand in your bosom.” And he put his hand in his bosom, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, (DC)like snow. 7 And He said, “Put your hand in your bosom again.” So he put his hand in his bosom again, and drew it out of his bosom, and behold, (DD)it was restored like his other flesh. 8 “Then it will be, if they do not believe you, nor heed the message of the (DE)first sign, that they may believe the message of the latter sign. 9 And it shall be, if they do not believe even these two signs, or listen to your voice, that you shall take water from [o]the river and pour it on the dry land. (DF)The water which you take from the river will become blood on the dry land.”
10 Then Moses said to the Lord, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but (DG)I am slow of speech and [p]slow of tongue.”
11 So the Lord said to him, (DH)“Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord? 12 Now therefore, go, and I will be (DI)with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.”
13 But he said, “O my Lord, (DJ)please send by the hand of whomever else You may send.”
14 So (DK)the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses, and He said: “Is not Aaron the Levite your (DL)brother? I know that he can speak well. And look, (DM)he is also coming out to meet you. When he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. 15 Now (DN)you shall speak to him and (DO)put the words in his mouth. And I will be with your mouth and with his mouth, and (DP)I will teach you what you shall do. 16 So he shall be your spokesman to the people. And he himself shall be as a mouth for you, and (DQ)you shall be to him as God. 17 And you shall take this rod in your hand, with which you shall do the signs.”

Aflicción de los israelitas en Egipto
1 Éstos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que entraron en Egipto con Jacob, cada uno con su familia: 2 Rubén, Simeón, Leví, Judá, 3 Isacar, Zabulón, Benjamín, 4 Dan, Neftalí, Gad y Aser. 5 Todas las personas de la descendencia de Jacob fueron setenta. José ya estaba en Egipto.
6 Murieron José, todos sus hermanos y toda aquella generación. 7 Pero los hijos de Israel fructificaron y se multiplicaron, llegaron a ser numerosos y fuertes en extremo, y se llenó de ellos la tierra.
8 Entretanto, se levantó sobre Egipto un nuevo rey que no conocía a José, y dijo a su pueblo: 9 «Mirad, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es más numeroso y fuerte que nosotros. 10 Ahora, pues, seamos sabios para con él, para que no se multiplique y acontezca que, en caso de guerra, él también se una a nuestros enemigos para pelear contra nosotros, y se vaya de esta tierra.»
11 Entonces pusieron sobre ellos comisarios de tributos para que los oprimieran con sus cargas. Así edificaron para el faraón las ciudades de almacenaje, Pitón y Ramesés. 12 Pero cuanto más los oprimían, tanto más se multiplicaban y crecían, de manera que los egipcios temían a los hijos de Israel.
13 Los egipcios hicieron servir a los hijos de Israel con dureza, 14 y amargaron su vida con dura servidumbre en la fabricación de barro y ladrillo, en toda labor del campo y en todo su servicio, al cual los obligaban con rigor. 15 También habló el rey de Egipto a las parteras de las hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Sifra y la otra Fúa, y les dijo:
16 —Cuando asistáis a las hebreas en sus partos, observad el sexo: si es hijo, matadlo; si es hija, dejadla vivir.
17 Pero las parteras temieron a Dios y no hicieron como les mandó el rey de Egipto, sino que preservaron la vida a los niños. 18 Entonces el rey de Egipto hizo llamar a las parteras, y les dijo:
—¿Por qué habéis hecho esto? ¿Por que habéis preservado la vida a los niños?
19 Las parteras respondieron al faraón:
—Porque las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias; son robustas y dan a luz antes que llegue la partera.
20 Dios favoreció a las parteras; el pueblo se multiplicó y se fortaleció mucho. 21 Y por haber las parteras temido a Dios, él prosperó sus familias.
22 Entonces el faraón dio a todo su pueblo esta orden: «Echad al río a todo hijo que nazca, y preservad la vida a toda hija.»
Nacimiento de Moisés
2 Un hombre de la familia de Leví fue y tomó por mujer a una hija de Leví, 2 la que concibió y dio a luz un hijo. Al ver que era hermoso, lo tuvo escondido durante tres meses. 3 Pero no pudiendo ocultarlo más tiempo, tomó una canasta, la calafateó con asfalto y brea, colocó en ella al niño y la puso entre los juncos a la orilla del río. 4 Y una hermana suya se puso a lo lejos para ver lo que le acontecería.
5 La hija del faraón descendió a lavarse al río y, mientras sus doncellas se paseaban por la ribera del río, vio ella la canasta entre los juncos y envió una criada suya para que la tomara. 6 Cuando la abrió, vio al niño, que estaba llorando. Llena de compasión por él, exclamó:
—Éste es un niño de los hebreos.
7 Entonces la hermana del niño dijo a la hija del faraón:
—¿Quieres que te llame a una nodriza de las hebreas para que te críe a este niño?
8 —Ve —respondió la hija del faraón.
La joven fue y llamó a la madre del niño, 9 a la cual dijo la hija del faraón:
—Llévate a este niño y críamelo; yo te lo pagaré.
La mujer tomó al niño y lo crió. 10 Y cuando el niño creció, se lo entregó a la hija del faraón, la cual lo crió como hijo suyo y le puso por nombre Moisés, diciendo: «Porque de las aguas lo saqué.»
Moisés huye de Egipto
11 En aquellos días sucedió que, crecido ya Moisés, salió a visitar a sus hermanos. Los vio en sus duras tareas, y observó a un egipcio que golpeaba a uno de sus hermanos hebreos. 12 Entonces miró a todas partes, y viendo que no había nadie, mató al egipcio y lo escondió en la arena. 13 Al día siguiente salió, vio a dos hebreos que reñían, y preguntó al que maltrataba al otro:
—¿Por qué golpeas a tu prójimo?
14 Él respondió:
—¿Quién te ha puesto a ti por príncipe y juez sobre nosotros? ¿Piensas matarme como mataste al egipcio?
Entonces Moisés tuvo miedo, y pensó: «Ciertamente esto ha sido descubierto.»
15 Cuando el faraón oyó acerca de este hecho, procuró matar a Moisés; pero Moisés huyó de la presencia del faraón y habitó en la tierra de Madián. Allí se sentó junto a un pozo.
16 El sacerdote de Madián tenía siete hijas, que fueron a sacar agua para llenar las pilas y dar de beber a las ovejas de su padre. 17 Pero llegaron los pastores y las echaron de allí; entonces Moisés se levantó, las defendió y dio de beber a sus ovejas. 18 Cuando ellas volvieron junto a su padre Reuel, éste les preguntó:
—¿Por qué habéis venido hoy tan pronto?
19 —Un varón egipcio nos libró de manos de los pastores; también nos sacó el agua y dio de beber a las ovejas —respondieron ellas.
20 Preguntó entonces Reuel a sus hijas:
—¿Dónde está? ¿Por qué habéis dejado marchar a ese hombre? Llamadlo para que coma.
21 Moisés aceptó vivir en casa de aquel hombre; y éste dio a su hija Séfora por mujer a Moisés.
22 Ella le dio a luz un hijo, y él le puso por nombre Gersón, pues dijo: «Forastero soy en tierra ajena.»
23 Aconteció que después de muchos días murió el rey de Egipto. Los hijos de Israel, que gemían a causa de la servidumbre, clamaron; y subió a Dios el clamor de ellos desde lo profundo de su servidumbre. 24 Dios oyó el gemido de ellos y se acordó de su pacto con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob. 25 Y miró Dios a los hijos de Israel, y conoció su condición.
Llamamiento de Moisés
3 Apacentando Moisés las ovejas de su suegro Jetro, sacerdote de Madián, llevó las ovejas a través del desierto y llegó hasta Horeb, monte de Dios. 2 Allí se le apareció el Ángel de Jehová en una llama de fuego, en medio de una zarza. Al fijarse, vio que la zarza ardía en fuego, pero la zarza no se consumía. 3 Entonces Moisés se dijo: «Iré ahora para contemplar esta gran visión, por qué causa la zarza no se quema.»
4 Cuando Jehová vio que él iba a mirar, lo llamó de en medio de la zarza:
—¡Moisés, Moisés!
—Aquí estoy —respondió él.
5 Dios le dijo:
—No te acerques; quita el calzado de tus pies, porque el lugar en que tú estás, tierra santa es.
6 Y añadió:
—Yo soy el Dios de tu padre, el Dios de Abraham, el Dios de Isaac y el Dios de Jacob.
Entonces Moisés cubrió su rostro, porque tuvo miedo de mirar a Dios.
7 Dijo luego Jehová:
—Bien he visto la aflicción de mi pueblo que está en Egipto, y he oído su clamor a causa de sus opresores, pues he conocido sus angustias. 8 Por eso he descendido para librarlos de manos de los egipcios y sacarlos de aquella tierra a una tierra buena y ancha, a una tierra que fluye leche y miel, a los lugares del cananeo, del heteo, del amorreo, del ferezeo, del heveo y del jebuseo. 9 El clamor, pues, de los hijos de Israel ha llegado ante mí, y también he visto la opresión con que los egipcios los oprimen. 10 Ven, por tanto, ahora, y te enviaré al faraón para que saques de Egipto a mi pueblo, a los hijos de Israel.
11 Entonces Moisés respondió a Dios:
—¿Quién soy yo para que vaya al faraón y saque de Egipto a los hijos de Israel?
12 Dios le respondió:
—Yo estaré contigo; y esto te será por señal de que yo te he enviado: cuando hayas sacado de Egipto al pueblo, serviréis a Dios sobre este monte.
13 Dijo Moisés a Dios:
—Si voy a los hijos de Israel y les digo: “Jehová, el Dios de vuestros padres, me ha enviado a vosotros”, me preguntarán: “¿Cuál es su nombre?” Entonces ¿qué les responderé?
14 Respondió Dios a Moisés:
—“Yo soy el que soy.”
Y añadió:
—Así dirás a los hijos de Israel: “‘Yo soy’ me envió a vosotros.”
15 Además, Dios dijo a Moisés:
—Así dirás a los hijos de Israel: “Jehová, el Dios de vuestros padres, el Dios de Abraham, el Dios de Isaac y el Dios de Jacob, me ha enviado a vosotros.” Éste es mi nombre para siempre; con él se me recordará por todos los siglos. 16 Ve, reúne a los ancianos de Israel y diles: “Jehová, el Dios de vuestros padres, el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob, se me apareció y me dijo: En verdad os he visitado y he visto lo que se os hace en Egipto. 17 Y he dicho: Yo os sacaré de la aflicción de Egipto a la tierra del cananeo, del heteo, del amorreo, del ferezeo, del heveo y del jebuseo, a una tierra que fluye leche y miel.” 18 Ellos oirán tu voz; tú irás con los ancianos de Israel al rey de Egipto y le dirás: “Jehová, el Dios de los hebreos, se nos ha manifestado; por tanto, nosotros iremos ahora tres días de camino por el desierto a ofrecer sacrificios a Jehová, nuestro Dios.” 19 Yo sé que el rey de Egipto no os dejará ir sino por la fuerza. 20 Pero yo extenderé mi mano y heriré a Egipto con todas las maravillas que obraré en el país, y entonces os dejará ir. 21 Yo haré que este pueblo halle gracia a los ojos de los egipcios, para que cuando salgáis no vayáis con las manos vacías, 22 sino que cada mujer pedirá a su vecina, y a la que se hospeda en su casa, alhajas de plata, alhajas de oro y vestidos, los cuales pondréis sobre vuestros hijos y vuestras hijas. Así despojaréis a los egipcios.
4 Entonces Moisés respondió y dijo:
—Ellos no me creerán, ni oirán mi voz, pues dirán: “No se te ha aparecido Jehová.”
2 —¿Qué es eso que tienes en tu mano? —le preguntó Jehová.
—Una vara —le respondió Moisés.
3 —Échala al suelo —le dijo Jehová.
Él la echó al suelo y se convirtió en una culebra; y Moisés huía de ella. 4 Entonces Jehová dijo a Moisés:
—Extiende tu mano y tómala por la cola.
Él extendió su mano y la tomó, y volvió a ser vara en su mano.
5 —Por esto creerán que se te ha aparecido Jehová, el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, el Dios de Isaac y el Dios de Jacob.
6 Le dijo además Jehová:
—Mete ahora tu mano en el seno.
Él metió la mano en su seno y, cuando la sacó, vio que su mano estaba leprosa como la nieve.
7 Le dijo Jehová:
—Vuelve a meter la mano en tu seno.
Él volvió a meter la mano en su seno, y al sacarla de nuevo del seno, vio que estaba como el resto de su carne.
8 —Si acontece que no te creen ni obedecen a la voz de la primera señal, creerán a la voz de la segunda. 9 Y si aún no creen a estas dos señales, ni oyen tu voz, tomarás de las aguas del río y las derramarás en tierra; y las aguas que saques del río se convertirán en sangre sobre la tierra.
10 Entonces dijo Moisés a Jehová:
—¡Ay, Señor! nunca he sido hombre de fácil palabra, ni antes ni desde que tú hablas con tu siervo, porque soy tardo en el habla y torpe de lengua.
11 Jehová le respondió:
—¿Quién dio la boca al hombre? ¿o quién hizo al mudo y al sordo, al que ve y al ciego? ¿No soy yo, Jehová? 12 Ahora, pues, ve, que yo estaré en tu boca y te enseñaré lo que has de hablar.
13 Y él dijo:
—¡Ay, Señor! envía, te ruego, a cualquier otra persona.
14 Entonces Jehová se enojó contra Moisés, y dijo:
—¿No conozco yo a tu hermano Aarón, el levita, y que él habla bien? Él saldrá a recibirte, y al verte se alegrará en su corazón. 15 Tú le hablarás y pondrás en su boca las palabras, y yo estaré en tu boca y en la suya, y os enseñaré lo que habéis de hacer. 16 Él hablará por ti al pueblo; será como tu boca, y tú ocuparás para él el lugar de Dios. 17 Y tomarás en tu mano esta vara, con la cual harás las señales.
