29 Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, (A)I will stretch out my hands to the Lord. The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that (B)the earth is the Lord's. 30 But as for you and your servants, (C)I know that you do not yet fear the Lord God.” 31 (The flax and the barley were struck down, for the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bud. 32 But the wheat and the emmer[a] were not struck down, for they are late in coming up.) 33 So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and (D)stretched out his hands to the Lord, and the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain no longer poured upon the earth. 34 But when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunder had ceased, he sinned yet again and (E)hardened his heart, (F)he and his servants. 35 So (G)the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people of Israel go, just as the Lord had spoken through Moses.

The Eighth Plague: Locusts

10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may show these signs of mine among them, and (H)that you may tell in the hearing of your son and of your grandson how I have dealt harshly with the Egyptians and what signs I have done among them, (I)that you may know that I am the Lord.”

So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to (J)humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me. For if you refuse to let my people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring (K)locusts into your country, and they shall cover the face of the land, so that no one can see the land. And they shall (L)eat what is left to you after the hail, and they shall eat every tree of yours that grows in the field, and they shall fill (M)your houses and the houses of all your servants and of all the Egyptians, as neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen, from the day they came on earth to this day.’” Then he turned and went out from Pharaoh.

Then Pharaoh's servants said to him, “How long shall this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God. Do you not yet understand that Egypt is ruined?” So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. And he said to them, (N)“Go, serve the Lord your God. But which ones are to go?” Moses said, “We will go with our young and our old. We will go with our sons and daughters and with our flocks and herds, for (O)we must hold a feast to the Lord.” 10 But he said to them, “The Lord be with you, if ever I let you and your (P)little ones go! Look, you have some evil purpose in mind.[b] 11 No! Go, the men among you, and serve the Lord, for that is what you are asking.” And they were driven out from Pharaoh's presence.

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, (Q)“Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, so that they may come upon the land of Egypt and (R)eat every plant in the land, all that the hail has left.” 13 So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought an east wind upon the land all that day and all that night. When it was morning, the east wind had brought the locusts. 14 (S)The locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and settled on the whole country of Egypt, (T)such a dense swarm of locusts as had never been before, nor ever will be again. 15 They covered the face of the whole land, so that the land was darkened, and (U)they ate all the plants in the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Not a green thing remained, neither tree nor plant of the field, through all the land of Egypt. 16 Then Pharaoh hastily called Moses and Aaron and said, (V)“I have sinned against the Lord your God, and against you. 17 Now therefore, forgive my sin, please, only this once, and (W)plead with the Lord your God only to remove this death from me.” 18 So (X)he went out from Pharaoh and pleaded with the Lord. 19 And the Lord turned the wind into a very strong west wind, which lifted the locusts and drove them (Y)into the Red Sea. Not a single locust was left in all the country of Egypt. 20 But the Lord (Z)hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the people of Israel go.

  1. Exodus 9:32 A type of wheat
  2. Exodus 10:10 Hebrew before your face

29 Moses replied, “As soon as I’m out of the city, I’ll spread out my hands to the Lord in prayer. The thunder will stop, and there will be no more hail. This is how you will know that the earth belongs to the Lord. 30 But I know that you and your officials still don’t fear the Lord God.”

31 (The flax and the barley were ruined, because the barley had formed heads and the flax was in bloom. 32 Neither the wheat nor the wild grain was damaged, because they ripen later.)

33 As soon as he left Pharaoh and went out of the city, Moses spread out his hands to the Lord in prayer. The thunder and the hail stopped, and no more rain came pouring down on the ground.

34 When Pharaoh saw that the rain, the hail, and the thunder had stopped, he sinned again. He and his officials continued to be stubborn. 35 Pharaoh was stubborn and would not let the Israelites go, as the Lord had predicted through Moses.

The Eighth Plague—Locusts

10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh. I have made him and his officials stubborn so that I can do these miraculous signs among them. You will be able to tell your children and grandchildren exactly how I treated the Egyptians and what miraculous signs I did among them. This is how you will all know that I am the Lord.”

So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “This is what the Lord God of the Hebrews says: How long will you refuse to humble yourself in my presence? Let my people go to worship me. If you refuse to let my people go, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country. They will cover the land so that the ground can’t be seen. They will eat everything left by the hail, including every tree still standing in the fields. They will fill your houses and the houses of all your officials and those of all the Egyptians. Your parents and ancestors never saw anything like this from the time they first came here until now.” Moses turned and left Pharaoh.

Then Pharaoh’s officials asked him, “How long will this man hold us in his grip? Let the Israelite men go to worship the Lord their God. When will you realize that Egypt is ruined?”

So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. “Go, worship the Lord your God,” he said to them. “But exactly who will be going?”

Moses answered, “Everyone! We’ll be taking our young and old, our sons and daughters, our flocks and herds with us. For us it’s a pilgrimage festival in the Lord’s honor.”

10 Pharaoh said to them, “The Lord would have to be with you if I would ever let you take your women and children along. I know you’re up to no good! 11 No! Only the men may go to worship the Lord, since that’s what you’ve been asking for.” Then Moses and Aaron were thrown out of Pharaoh’s palace.

12 The Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over Egypt to bring locusts. They will invade Egypt and eat up every plant in the land—everything left by the hail.”

13 Moses held his staff over the land of Egypt, and the Lord made a wind from the east blow over the land all that day and all that night. By morning the east wind had brought the locusts. 14 They invaded all of Egypt and landed all over the country in great swarms. Never before had there been so many locusts like this, nor would there ever be that many again. 15 They covered all the ground until it was black ⌞with them⌟. They ate all the plants and all the fruit on the trees that the hail had left. Nothing green was left on any tree or plant anywhere in Egypt.

16 Then Pharaoh quickly called for Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Please forgive my sin one more time. Pray to the Lord your God to take this deadly plague away from me.”

18 Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. 19 Then the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind. It picked up the locusts and blew them into the Red Sea. Not one locust was left anywhere in Egypt.

20 But the Lord made Pharaoh stubborn, so he did not let the Israelites go.

¿Cómo os voy a dejar ir a vosotros y a vuestros niños?

29 Моисей сказал ему: как скоро я выйду из города, простру руки мои к Господу; громы перестанут, и града более не будет, дабы ты узнал, что Господня земля;

31 Лен и ячмень были побиты, потому что ячмень выколосился, а лен осеменился;

Моисей и Аарон пришли к фараону и сказали ему: так говорит Господь, Бог Евреев: долго ли ты не смиришься предо Мною? отпусти народ Мой, чтобы он совершил Мне служение;

14 И напала саранча на всю землю Египетскую и легла по всей стране Египетской в великом множестве: прежде не бывало такой саранчи, и после сего не будет такой;

16 Фараон поспешно призвал Моисея и Аарона и сказал: согрешил я пред Господом, Богом вашим, и пред вами;

The Lord Has Destroyed Without Pity

How the Lord in his anger
    has set the daughter of Zion (A)under a cloud!
(B)He has cast down from heaven to earth
    the splendor of Israel;
he has not remembered (C)his footstool
    in the day of his anger.

The Lord (D)has swallowed up (E)without mercy
    all the habitations of Jacob;
in his wrath (F)he has broken down
    the strongholds of the daughter of Judah;
he has brought (G)down to the ground (H)in dishonor
    the kingdom (I)and its rulers.

He has cut down in (J)fierce anger
    all (K)the might of Israel;
(L)he has withdrawn from them his right hand
    in the face of the enemy;
(M)he has burned like a flaming fire in Jacob,
    consuming all around.

(N)He has bent his bow like an enemy,
    with his right hand set (O)like a foe;
and he has killed all who were delightful in our eyes
    in the tent of the daughter of Zion;
he has poured out his fury like fire.

(P)The Lord has become like an enemy;
    (Q)he has swallowed up Israel;
(R)he has swallowed up all its palaces;
    he has laid in ruins its strongholds,
and he has multiplied in the daughter of Judah
    (S)mourning and lamentation.

He has laid waste his booth like a garden,
    laid in ruins (T)his meeting place;
(U)the Lord has made Zion forget
    festival and (V)Sabbath,
and in his fierce indignation has spurned king and priest.

(W)The Lord has scorned his altar,
    (X)disowned his sanctuary;
(Y)he has delivered into the hand of the enemy
    the walls of her palaces;
(Z)they raised a clamor in the house of the Lord
    as on the day of festival.

(AA)The Lord determined to lay in ruins
    (AB)the wall of the daughter of Zion;
(AC)he stretched out the measuring line;
    he did not restrain his hand from destroying;
(AD)he caused rampart and wall to lament;
    (AE)they languished together.

Her gates have sunk into the ground;
    (AF)he has ruined (AG)and broken her bars;
(AH)her king and princes are among the nations;
    the law is no more,
and (AI)her prophets find
    no vision from the Lord.

10 The elders of the daughter of Zion
    (AJ)sit on the ground (AK)in silence;
(AL)they have thrown dust on their heads
    and (AM)put on sackcloth;
the young women of Jerusalem
    have bowed their heads to the ground.

11 (AN)My eyes are spent with weeping;
    (AO)my stomach churns;
(AP)my bile is poured out to the ground
    (AQ)because of the destruction of the daughter of my people,
(AR)because infants and babies (AS)faint
    in the streets of the city.

12 They cry to their mothers,
    (AT)“Where is bread and wine?”
(AU)as they faint like a wounded man
    in the streets of the city,
as their life is poured out
    on their mothers' bosom.

13 What can I say for you, (AV)to what compare you,
    O daughter of Jerusalem?
(AW)What can I liken to you, that I may comfort you,
    O virgin daughter of Zion?
(AX)For your ruin is vast as the sea;
    who can heal you?

14 (AY)Your prophets have seen for you
    false and deceptive visions;
(AZ)they have not exposed your iniquity
    to (BA)restore your fortunes,
(BB)but have seen for you (BC)oracles
    that are false and misleading.

15 All who pass along the way
    clap their hands at you;
(BD)they hiss and wag their heads
    at the daughter of Jerusalem:
“Is this the city that was called
    (BE)the perfection of beauty,
    (BF)the joy of all the earth?”

16 (BG)All your enemies
    rail against you;
they hiss, they gnash their teeth,
    they cry: “We (BH)have swallowed her!
Ah, this is the day we longed for;
    now we have it; (BI)we see it!”

17 The Lord has done what he purposed;
    he has carried out (BJ)his word,
which he commanded (BK)long ago;
    (BL)he has thrown down (BM)without pity;
(BN)he has made the enemy rejoice over you
    and exalted the (BO)might of your foes.

18 Their heart cried to the Lord.
    O (BP)wall of the daughter of Zion,
(BQ)let tears stream down like a torrent
    (BR)day and night!
(BS)Give yourself no rest,
    (BT)your eyes no respite!

19 “Arise, (BU)cry out in the night,
    at the beginning of the night watches!
(BV)Pour out your heart like water
    before the presence of the Lord!
(BW)Lift your hands to him
    for the lives of your children,
(BX)who faint for hunger
    at the head of every street.”

20 Look, O Lord, and see!
    (BY)With whom have you dealt thus?
(BZ)Should women eat the fruit of their womb,
    the children of (CA)their tender care?
Should (CB)priest and prophet be killed
    in the sanctuary of the Lord?

21 In the dust of the streets
    (CC)lie the young and the old;
(CD)my young women and my young men
    have fallen by the sword;
(CE)you have killed them in the day of your anger,
    slaughtering (CF)without pity.

22 You summoned as if to (CG)a festival day
    (CH)my terrors on every side,
(CI)and on the day of the anger of the Lord
    no one escaped or survived;
(CJ)those whom I held and raised
    my enemy destroyed.

The Prophet Speaks Out: the Lord Destroyed Zion

[a]“Look how the Lord has covered the people of Zion
with the cloud of his anger!
He has thrown down Israel’s beauty from heaven to earth.
He didn’t ⌞even⌟ remember his footstool on the day of his anger.
The Lord swallowed up all of Jacob’s pastures without any pity.
He tore down the fortified cities of Judah in his fury.
He brought the kingdom ⌞of Judah⌟ and its leaders
down to the ground in dishonor.
In his burning anger he cut off all of Israel’s strength.
He withdrew his right hand when they faced their enemy.
He burned like a raging fire in ⌞the land of⌟ Jacob,
destroying everything around him.
Like an enemy he bent his bow.
Like an opponent his right hand held the arrow steady.
He killed all the beautiful people.
He poured out his fury like fire on the tent of Zion’s people.
The Lord became an enemy.
He swallowed up Israel.
He swallowed up all of its palaces.
He destroyed its strongholds.
He made the people of Judah mourn and moan.
He stripped his own booth as if it were a garden
and destroyed his own festivals.
The Lord wiped out the memory of festivals and days of rest—holy days—in Zion.
He expelled kings and priests because of his fierce anger.
The Lord rejected his altar and disowned his holy place.
He handed the walls of Zion’s palaces over to its enemies.
The enemies made noise in the Lord’s temple
as though it were a festival day.
The Lord planned to destroy the wall of Zion’s people.
He marked it off with a line.
He didn’t take his hand away until he had swallowed it up.
He made the towers and walls mourn.
They are completely dejected.

The Prophet Describes Jerusalem’s Destruction

⌞Zion’s⌟ gates have sunk into the ground.
⌞The Lord destroyed and shattered the bars across its ⌞gates⌟.
Its king and influential people are ⌞scattered⌟ among the nations.
There is no longer any instruction ⌞from Moses’ Teachings⌟.
Its prophets can find no visions from the Lord.
10 The respected leaders of Zion’s people sit silently on the ground.
They throw dirt on their heads and put on sackcloth.
The young women of Jerusalem bow their heads to the ground.
11 My eyes are worn out with tears.
My stomach is churning.
My heart is poured out on the ground
because of the destruction of my people.
Little children and infants faint in the city streets.
12 They’re asking their mothers for some bread and wine
as they faint like wounded people in the city streets.
Their lives dwindle away in their mothers’ arms.

The Prophet Speaks Out: the Lord Destroyed You

13 “What example can I give you?
What parallel can I show you, people of Jerusalem?
What comparison can I make that will comfort you, beloved people of Zion?
Your wounds are as deep as the sea.
Who can heal you?
14 Your prophets saw misleading visions about you.
They painted a good picture of you.
They didn’t expose your guilt in order to make things better again.
They gave you false prophecies that misled you.
15 Everyone who walks along the road shakes a fist at you.
They hiss and shake their heads at Jerusalem’s people:
‘Is this the city they used to call absolutely beautiful,
the joy of the whole world?’
16 All your enemies gawk at you.
They hiss and grit their teeth.
They say, ‘We’ve swallowed it up.
Yes, this is the day we’ve been waiting for.
At last we have seen it!’
17 The Lord has accomplished what he had planned to do.
He carried out the threat he announced long ago.
He tore you down without any pity, ⌞Jerusalem⌟.
He made your enemies gloat over you.
He raised the weapons of your opponents.
18 The hearts of Jerusalem’s people
cried out to the Lord, the wall of Zion’s people.
Let your tears run down like a river day and night.
Don’t let them stop.
Don’t let your eyes rest.
19 Get up! Cry out at night, every hour on the hour.
Pour your heart out like water in the presence of the Lord.
Lift up your hands to him ⌞in prayer⌟
for the life of your little children
who faint from hunger at every street corner.”

Zion Speaks Out: the Lord Destroyed Me

20 “O Lord, look and consider:
Have you ever treated anyone like this?
Should women eat their own children,
the children they have nursed?
Should priests and prophets be killed in the Lord’s holy place?
21 Young and old lie on the ground in the streets.
My young women and men are cut down by swords.
You killed them on the day of your anger.
You slaughtered them without any pity.
22 You have invited those who terrorize me on every side,
as though they were invited to a festival.
No one escaped or survived on the day of the Lord’s anger.
My enemy has murdered the children I nursed and raised.”

  1. 2:1 Chapter 2 is a poem in Hebrew alphabetical order.

Destruyó el Señor, y no perdonó;

Destruyó en su furor todas las tiendas de Jacob;

Cortó con el ardor de su ira todo el poderío de Israel;

El Señor llegó a ser como enemigo, destruyó a Israel;

Quitó su tienda como enramada de huerto;

Destruyó el lugar en donde se congregaban;

Desechó el Señor su altar, menospreció su santuario;

Ha entregado en mano del enemigo los muros de sus palacios;

Jehová determinó destruir el muro de la hija de Sion;

Extendió el cordel, no retrajo su mano de la destrucción;

Sus puertas fueron echadas por tierra, destruyó y quebrantó sus cerrojos;

Su rey y sus príncipes están entre las naciones donde no hay ley;

Sus profetas tampoco hallaron visión de Jehová.

10 Se sentaron en tierra, callaron los ancianos de la hija de Sion;

Echaron polvo sobre sus cabezas, se ciñeron de cilicio;

14 Tus profetas vieron para ti vanidad y locura;

Y no descubrieron tu pecado para impedir tu cautiverio,

Sino que te predicaron vanas profecías y extravíos.

15 Todos los que pasaban por el camino batieron las manos sobre ti;

16 Todos tus enemigos abrieron contra ti su boca;

Se burlaron, y crujieron los dientes; dijeron: Devorémosla;

17 Jehová ha hecho lo que tenía determinado;

Destruyó, y no perdonó;

18 El corazón de ellos clamaba al Señor;

Oh hija de Sion, echa lágrimas cual arroyo día y noche;

19 Levántate, da voces en la noche, al comenzar las vigilias;

Derrama como agua tu corazón ante la presencia del Señor;

20 Mira, oh Jehová, y considera a quién has hecho así.

21 Niños y viejos yacían por tierra en las calles;

Mis vírgenes y mis jóvenes cayeron a espada;

22 Has convocado de todas partes mis temores, como en un día de solemnidad;

Y en el día del furor de Jehová no hubo quien escapase ni quedase vivo;

  1. Lamentaciones 2:6 Aquí equivale a sábado.

в пылу гнева сломил все роги Израилевы, отвел десницу Свою от неприятеля и воспылал в Иакове, как палящий огонь, пожиравший все вокруг;

Jesus Greater Than Moses

Therefore, holy brothers,[a] you who share in (A)a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, (B)the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, (C)just as Moses also was faithful in all God's[b] house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but (D)the builder of all things is God.) (E)Now Moses was faithful in all God's house (F)as a servant, (G)to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God's house as (H)a son. And (I)we are his house, if indeed we (J)hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.[c]

A Rest for the People of God

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

(K)“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
    on the day of testing in the wilderness,
where your fathers put me to the test
    and saw my works for (L)forty years.
10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation,
and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
    they have not known my ways.’
11 (M)As I swore in my wrath,
    ‘They shall not enter my rest.’”

12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from (N)the living God. 13 But (O)exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by (P)the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, (Q)if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said,

(R)“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

16 For (S)who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not (T)all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, (U)whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that (V)they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that (W)they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

Christ Is Superior to Moses

Brothers and sisters, you are holy partners in a heavenly calling. So look carefully at Jesus, the apostle and chief priest about whom we make our declaration of faith. Jesus is faithful to God, who appointed him, in the same way that Moses was faithful when he served in God’s house. Jesus deserves more praise than Moses in the same way that the builder of a house is praised more than the house. After all, every house has a builder, but the builder of everything is God.

Moses was a faithful servant in God’s household. He told ⌞the people⌟ what God would say in the future. But Christ is a faithful son in charge of God’s household. We are his household if we continue to have courage and to be proud of the confidence we have.

As the Holy Spirit says,

“If you hear God speak today, don’t be stubborn.
Don’t be stubborn like those who rebelled
and tested me in the desert.
That is where your ancestors tested me,
10 although they had seen what I had done for 40 years.
That is why I was angry with those people. So I said,
‘Their hearts continue to stray,
and they have not learned my ways.’
11 So I angrily took a solemn oath
that they would never enter my place of rest.”

12 Be careful, brothers and sisters, that none of you ever develop a wicked, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 Encourage each other every day while you have the opportunity. If you do this, none of you will be deceived by sin and become stubborn. 14 After all, we will remain Christ’s partners only if we continue to hold on to our original confidence until the end.

15 Scripture says,

“If you hear God speak today, don’t be stubborn.
Don’t be stubborn like those who rebelled.”

16 Who heard God and rebelled? All those whom Moses led out of Egypt rebelled. 17 With whom was God angry for 40 years? He was angry with those who sinned and died in the desert. 18 Who did God swear would never enter his place of rest? He was talking about those who didn’t obey him. 19 So we see that they couldn’t enter his place of rest because they didn’t believe.

No endurezcáis vuestros corazones,

И Моисей верен во всем доме Его, как служитель, для засвидетельствования того, что надлежало возвестить;

10 Посему Я вознегодовал на оный род и сказал: непрестанно заблуждаются сердцем, не познали они путей Моих;
