19 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and (A)stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their streams, over their rivers, over their ponds, and over all their pools of water, that they may become blood. And there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in buckets of wood and pitchers of stone.’ ” 20 And Moses and Aaron did so, just as the Lord commanded. So he (B)lifted up the rod and struck the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants. And all the (C)waters that were in the river were turned to blood. 21 The fish that were in the river died, the river stank, and the Egyptians (D)could not drink the water of the river. So there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.

22 (E)Then the magicians of Egypt did (F)so with their [a]enchantments; and Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, (G)as the Lord had said. 23 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house. Neither was his heart moved by this. 24 So all the Egyptians dug all around the river for water to drink, because they could not drink the water of the river. 25 And seven days passed after the Lord had struck the river.

19 The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff(A) and stretch out your hand(B) over the waters of Egypt—over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs—and they will turn to blood.’ Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in vessels[a] of wood and stone.”

20 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded.(C) He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile,(D) and all the water was changed into blood.(E) 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt.

22 But the Egyptian magicians(F) did the same things by their secret arts,(G) and Pharaoh’s heart(H) became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said. 23 Instead, he turned and went into his palace, and did not take even this to heart. 24 And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile to get drinking water(I), because they could not drink the water of the river.
