The Cloud and the Glory

34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.(A) 35 Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled upon it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 36 Whenever the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, the Israelites would set out on each stage of their journey,(B) 37 but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day that it was taken up. 38 For the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud[a] by night, before the eyes of all the house of Israel at each stage of their journey.(C)

The Glory of the Lord

34 Then the cloud(A) covered the tent of meeting, and the glory(B) of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory(C) of the Lord filled the tabernacle.(D)

36 In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out;(E) 37 but if the cloud did not lift, they did not set out—until the day it lifted. 38 So the cloud(F) of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.[a](A)

10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, yet the world did not know him.(B) 11 He came to what was his own,[b] and his own people did not accept him. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God,(C) 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.(D)

14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son,[c] full of grace and truth.(E) 15 (John testified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ ”) 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.[d](F) 17 The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(G) 18 No one has ever seen God. It is the only Son, himself God, who[e] is close to the Father’s heart,[f] who has made him known.(H)

14 The Word became flesh(L) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,(M) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace(N) and truth.(O)

15 (John testified(P) concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)(Q) 16 Out of his fullness(R) we have all received grace(S) in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses;(T) grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(U) 18 No one has ever seen God,(V) but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[a](W) is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
