Jethro’s Advice(A)
18 And (B)Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that (C)God had done for Moses and for Israel His people—that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took (D)Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back, 3 with her (E)two sons, of whom the name of one was [a]Gershom (for he said, (F)“I have been a [b]stranger in a foreign land”) 4 and the name of the other was [c]Eliezer (for he said, “The God of my father was my (G)help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”); 5 and Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he was encamped at (H)the mountain of God. 6 Now he had said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.”
7 So Moses (I)went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down, and (J)kissed him. And they asked each other about their well-being, and they went into the tent. 8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship that had come upon them on the way, and how the Lord had (K)delivered them. 9 Then Jethro rejoiced for all the (L)good which the Lord had done for Israel, whom He had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians. 10 And Jethro said, (M)“Blessed be the Lord, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, and who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that the Lord is (N)greater than all the gods; (O)for in the very thing in which they [d]behaved (P)proudly, He was above them.” 12 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, [e]took a burnt (Q)offering and other sacrifices to offer to God. And Aaron came with all the elders of Israel (R)to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.
13 And so it was, on the next day, that Moses (S)sat to judge the people; and the people stood before Moses from morning until evening. 14 So when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone [f]sit, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?”
15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because (T)the people come to me to inquire of God. 16 When they have (U)a [g]difficulty, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God and His laws.”
17 So Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good. 18 Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; (V)you are not able to perform it by yourself. 19 Listen now to my voice; I will give you [h]counsel, and God will be with you: Stand (W)before God for the people, so that you may (X)bring the difficulties to God. 20 And you shall (Y)teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and (Z)the work they must do. 21 Moreover you shall select from all the people (AA)able men, such as (AB)fear God, (AC)men of truth, (AD)hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 22 And let them judge the people at all times. (AE)Then it will be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for (AF)they will bear the burden with you. 23 If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their (AG)place in peace.”
24 So Moses heeded the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. 25 And (AH)Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 26 So they judged the people at all times; the (AI)hard[i] cases they brought to Moses, but they judged every small case themselves.
27 Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and (AJ)he went his way to his own land.
Israel at Mount Sinai
19 In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on the same day, (AK)they came to the Wilderness of Sinai. 2 For they had departed from (AL)Rephidim, had come to the Wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness. So Israel camped there before (AM)the mountain.
3 And (AN)Moses went up to God, and the Lord (AO)called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4 (AP)‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how (AQ)I [j]bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. 5 Now (AR)therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and (AS)keep My covenant, then (AT)you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is (AU)Mine. 6 And you shall be to Me a (AV)kingdom of priests and a (AW)holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
7 So Moses came and called for the (AX)elders of the people, and [k]laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him. 8 Then (AY)all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” So Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. 9 And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you (AZ)in the thick cloud, (BA)that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.”
So Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.
10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and (BB)consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. 11 And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. (BC)Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with an arrow; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain.”
14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; (BD)do not come near your wives.”
16 Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were (BE)thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp (BF)trembled. 17 And (BG)Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Now (BH)Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the Lord descended upon (BI)it in fire. (BJ)Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and [l]the (BK)whole mountain quaked greatly. 19 And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, (BL)Moses spoke, and (BM)God answered him by voice. 20 Then the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.
21 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go down and warn the people, lest they break through (BN)to gaze at the Lord, and many of them perish. 22 Also let the (BO)priests who come near the Lord (BP)consecrate themselves, lest the Lord (BQ)break out against them.”
23 But Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai; for You warned us, saying, (BR)‘Set bounds around the mountain and consecrate it.’ ”
24 Then the Lord said to him, “Away! Get down and then come up, you and Aaron with you. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the Lord, lest He break out against them.” 25 So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.
The Ten Commandments(BS)
20 And God spoke (BT)all these words, saying:
2 (BU)“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, (BV)out of the house of [m]bondage.
3 (BW)“You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 (BX)“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 (BY)you shall not bow down to them nor [n]serve them. (BZ)For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, (CA)visiting[o] the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but (CB)showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
7 (CC)“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord (CD)will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
8 (CE)“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 (CF)Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the (CG)seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, (CH)nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For (CI)in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
12 (CJ)“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be (CK)long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
13 (CL)“You shall not murder.
14 (CM)“You shall not commit (CN)adultery.
15 (CO)“You shall not steal.
16 (CP)“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17 (CQ)“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; (CR)you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
The People Afraid of God’s Presence
18 Now (CS)all the people (CT)witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain (CU)smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. 19 Then they said to Moses, (CV)“You speak with us, and we will hear; but (CW)let not God speak with us, lest we die.”
20 And Moses said to the people, (CX)“Do not fear; (CY)for God has come to test you, and (CZ)that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.” 21 So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near (DA)the thick darkness where God was.
The Law of the Altar
22 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘You have seen that I have talked with you (DB)from heaven. 23 You shall not make anything to be (DC)with Me—gods of silver or gods of gold you shall not make for yourselves.

Jethro Visits Moses
18 Now Jethro,(A) the priest of Midian(B) and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.(C)
2 After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah,(D) his father-in-law Jethro received her 3 and her two sons.(E) One son was named Gershom,[a] for Moses said, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land”;(F) 4 and the other was named Eliezer,[b](G) for he said, “My father’s God was my helper;(H) he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.”
5 Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, together with Moses’ sons and wife, came to him in the wilderness, where he was camped near the mountain(I) of God. 6 Jethro had sent word to him, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.”
7 So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down(J) and kissed(K) him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent. 8 Moses told his father-in-law about everything the Lord had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel’s sake and about all the hardships(L) they had met along the way and how the Lord had saved(M) them.
9 Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things(N) the Lord had done for Israel in rescuing them from the hand of the Egyptians. 10 He said, “Praise be to the Lord,(O) who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all other gods,(P) for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly.”(Q) 12 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law,(R) brought a burnt offering(S) and other sacrifices(T) to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal(U) with Moses’ father-in-law in the presence(V) of God.
13 The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening. 14 When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, “What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?”
15 Moses answered him, “Because the people come to me to seek God’s will.(W) 16 Whenever they have a dispute,(X) it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God’s decrees and instructions.”(Y)
17 Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.(Z) 19 Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you.(AA) You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes(AB) to him. 20 Teach them his decrees and instructions,(AC) and show them the way they are to live(AD) and how they are to behave.(AE) 21 But select capable men(AF) from all the people—men who fear(AG) God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain(AH)—and appoint them as officials(AI) over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22 Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case(AJ) to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share(AK) it with you. 23 If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.”
24 Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. 25 He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders(AL) of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.(AM) 26 They served as judges(AN) for the people at all times. The difficult cases(AO) they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves.(AP)
27 Then Moses sent his father-in-law on his way, and Jethro returned to his own country.(AQ)
At Mount Sinai
19 On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt(AR)—on that very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai.(AS) 2 After they set out from Rephidim,(AT) they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.(AU)
3 Then Moses went up to God,(AV) and the Lord called(AW) to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt,(AX) and how I carried you on eagles’ wings(AY) and brought you to myself.(AZ) 5 Now if you obey me fully(BA) and keep my covenant,(BB) then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.(BC) Although the whole earth(BD) is mine, 6 you[c] will be for me a kingdom of priests(BE) and a holy nation.’(BF) These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”
7 So Moses went back and summoned the elders(BG) of the people and set before them all the words the Lord had commanded him to speak.(BH) 8 The people all responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has said.”(BI) So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.
9 The Lord said to Moses, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud,(BJ) so that the people will hear me speaking(BK) with you and will always put their trust(BL) in you.” Then Moses told the Lord what the people had said.
10 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate(BM) them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes(BN) 11 and be ready by the third day,(BO) because on that day the Lord will come down(BP) on Mount Sinai(BQ) in the sight of all the people. 12 Put limits(BR) for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death. 13 They are to be stoned(BS) or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.’ Only when the ram’s horn(BT) sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.”(BU)
14 After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes.(BV) 15 Then he said to the people, “Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain(BW) from sexual relations.”
16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder(BX) and lightning, with a thick cloud(BY) over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast.(BZ) Everyone in the camp trembled.(CA) 17 Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.(CB) 18 Mount Sinai was covered with smoke,(CC) because the Lord descended on it in fire.(CD) The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace,(CE) and the whole mountain[d] trembled(CF) violently. 19 As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice(CG) of God answered(CH) him.[e]
20 The Lord descended to the top of Mount Sinai(CI) and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up 21 and the Lord said to him, “Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see(CJ) the Lord and many of them perish.(CK) 22 Even the priests, who approach(CL) the Lord, must consecrate(CM) themselves, or the Lord will break out against them.”(CN)
23 Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up Mount Sinai,(CO) because you yourself warned us, ‘Put limits(CP) around the mountain and set it apart as holy.’”
24 The Lord replied, “Go down and bring Aaron(CQ) up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to the Lord, or he will break out against them.”(CR)
25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.
The Ten Commandments(CS)

2 “I am the Lord your God,(CV) who brought you out(CW) of Egypt,(CX) out of the land of slavery.(CY)
3 “You shall have no other gods before[f] me.(CZ)
4 “You shall not make for yourself an image(DA) in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship(DB) them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,(DC) punishing the children for the sin of the parents(DD) to the third and fourth generation(DE) of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand(DF) generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.(DG)
8 “Remember the Sabbath(DH) day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,(DI) 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath(DJ) to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,(DK) the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested(DL) on the seventh day.(DM) Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12 “Honor your father and your mother,(DN) so that you may live long(DO) in the land(DP) the Lord your God is giving you.
13 “You shall not murder.(DQ)

15 “You shall not steal.(DS)
16 “You shall not give false testimony(DT) against your neighbor.(DU)
17 “You shall not covet(DV) your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet(DW) and saw the mountain in smoke,(DX) they trembled with fear.(DY) They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak(DZ) to us or we will die.”(EA)
20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid.(EB) God has come to test(EC) you, so that the fear(ED) of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”(EE)
21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness(EF) where God was.
Idols and Altars
22 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites this: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven:(EG) 23 Do not make any gods to be alongside me;(EH) do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.(EI)

Isaiah Called to Be a Prophet(A)
6 In the year that (B)King Uzziah died, I (C)saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, (D)with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one cried to another and said:
4 And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.
5 So I said:
“Woe is me, for I am [a]undone!
Because I am a man of (G)unclean lips,
And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the King,
The Lord of hosts.”
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from (H)the altar. 7 And he (I)touched my mouth with it, and said:
“Behold, this has touched your lips;
Your iniquity is taken away,
And your sin [b]purged.”
8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying:
“Whom shall I send,
And who will go for (J)Us?”
Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
9 And He said, “Go, and (K)tell this people:
‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand;
Keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’
10 “Make (L)the heart of this people dull,
And their ears heavy,
And shut their eyes;
(M)Lest they see with their eyes,
And hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart,
And return and be healed.”
11 Then I said, “Lord, how long?”
And He answered:
(N)“Until the cities are laid waste and without inhabitant,
The houses are without a man,
The land is utterly desolate,
12 (O)The Lord has removed men far away,
And the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
13 But yet a tenth will be in it,
And will return and be for consuming,
As a terebinth tree or as an oak,
Whose stump remains when it is cut down.
So (P)the holy seed shall be its stump.”
Isaiah Sent to King Ahaz(Q)
7 Now it came to pass in the days of (R)Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to make war against (S)it, but could not [c]prevail against it. 2 And it was told to the house of David, saying, “Syria’s forces are [d]deployed in Ephraim.” So his heart and the heart of his people were moved as the trees of the woods are moved with the wind.
3 Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and [e]Shear-Jashub your son, at the end of the aqueduct from the upper pool, on the highway to the Fuller’s Field, 4 and say to him: [f]‘Take heed, and [g]be (T)quiet; do not fear or be fainthearted for these two stubs of smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and the son of Remaliah. 5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah have plotted evil against you, saying, 6 “Let us go up against Judah and [h]trouble it, and let us make a gap in its wall for ourselves, and set a king over them, the son of Tabel”—

6 In the year that King Uzziah(A) died,(B) I saw the Lord,(C) high and exalted,(D) seated on a throne;(E) and the train of his robe(F) filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim,(G) each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet,(H) and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:
4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.(M)
5 “Woe(N) to me!” I cried. “I am ruined!(O) For I am a man of unclean lips,(P) and I live among a people of unclean lips,(Q) and my eyes have seen(R) the King,(S) the Lord Almighty.”(T)
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal(U) in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips;(V) your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.(W)”
8 Then I heard the voice(X) of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send?(Y) And who will go for us?(Z)”
And I said, “Here am I.(AA) Send me!”
9 He said, “Go(AB) and tell this people:
“‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’(AC)
10 Make the heart of this people calloused;(AD)
make their ears dull
and close their eyes.[a](AE)
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,(AF)
understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”(AG)
11 Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”(AH)
And he answered:
“Until the cities lie ruined(AI)
and without inhabitant,
until the houses are left deserted(AJ)
and the fields ruined and ravaged,(AK)
12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away(AL)
and the land is utterly forsaken.(AM)
13 And though a tenth remains(AN) in the land,
it will again be laid waste.(AO)
But as the terebinth and oak
leave stumps(AP) when they are cut down,
so the holy(AQ) seed will be the stump in the land.”(AR)
The Sign of Immanuel
7 When Ahaz(AS) son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin(AT) of Aram(AU) and Pekah(AV) son of Remaliah(AW) king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.
2 Now the house of David(AX) was told, “Aram has allied itself with[b] Ephraim(AY)”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken,(AZ) as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.
3 Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,[c](BA) to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.(BB) 4 Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm(BC) and don’t be afraid.(BD) Do not lose heart(BE) because of these two smoldering stubs(BF) of firewood—because of the fierce anger(BG) of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.(BH) 5 Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s(BI) son have plotted(BJ) your ruin, saying, 6 “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.”

Christ Fulfills the Law
17 (N)“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, (O)till heaven and earth pass away, one [a]jot or one [b]tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 (P)Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds (Q)the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.(Q) 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.(R) 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands(S) and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.(T)
