Exodus 17:7-9
Revised Standard Version
7 And he called the name of the place Massah[a] and Mer′ibah,[b] because of the faultfinding of the children of Israel, and because they put the Lord to the proof by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Amalek Attacks Israel and Is Defeated
8 Then came Am′alek and fought with Israel at Reph′idim. 9 And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out, fight with Am′alek; tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.”

Exodus 17:7-9
New International Version
7 And he called the place Massah[a](A) and Meribah[b](B) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
The Amalekites Defeated
8 The Amalekites(C) came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.(D) 9 Moses said to Joshua,(E) “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff(F) of God in my hands.”
