22 So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, (A)“Every son who is [a]born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

Moses Is Born(B)

And (C)a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. So the woman conceived and bore a son. And (D)when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of (E)bulrushes for him, daubed it with (F)asphalt and (G)pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds (H)by the river’s bank. (I)And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him.

Then the (J)daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river. And her maidens walked along the riverside; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it. And when she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby wept. So she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”

And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the maiden went and called the child’s mother. Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became (K)her son. So she called his name [b]Moses, saying, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “(A)Every son who is born, [a]you are to throw into (B)the Nile, but every daughter, you are to keep alive.”

The Birth of Moses

Now a man from (C)the house of Levi went and [b]married a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived and gave birth to a son; and when she saw [c]that he was [d](D)beautiful, she hid him for three months. But when she could no longer hide him, she got him a (E)papyrus [e]basket and covered it with tar and pitch. Then she put the child in it and set it among the (F)reeds by the bank of the Nile. (G)And his sister stood at a distance to [f]find out what would [g]happen to him.

Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down (H)to bathe at the Nile, with her female attendants walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the [h]basket among the reeds and sent her slave woman, and she brought it to her. When she opened it, she [i]saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a woman for you who is nursing from the Hebrew women, so that she may nurse the child for you?” Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go ahead.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and (I)he became her son. And she named him [j]Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”
