18 Then the King of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done thus, and have preserved alive the men children?
19 And the midwives answered Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew [a]women are not as the women of Egypt: for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come at them.
20 God therefore prospered the midwives, and the people multiplied, and were very mighty.

New International Version
18 Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”
19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.”(A)
20 So God was kind to the midwives(B) and the people increased and became even more numerous.
