¹³ The Egyptians compelled the sons of Israel ^(A)to labor rigorously; ¹⁴ and they made ^(B)their lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks and at all kinds of labor in the field, all their labors which they rigorously ^[a]imposed on them.

⁴⁶ You may even bequeath them to your sons after you, to receive as a possession; you can use them as permanent slaves. ^(A)But in respect to your ^[a]countrymen, the sons of Israel, you shall not rule with severity over one another.

⁵³ Like a man hired year by year he shall be with him; ^(A)he shall not rule over him with severity in your sight.

⁴ Those who are sickly you have not strengthened, the ^[a]diseased you have not healed, ^(A)the broken you have not bound up, the scattered you have not brought back, nor have you ^(B)sought for the lost; but with force and with severity you have dominated them.
