9 Apoi Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: „Du-te la Faraon şi spune-i: «Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul evreilor: ‘Lasă-Mi poporul să plece ca să Mi se închine. 2 Dacă nu-l vei lăsa să plece şi-l vei opri din nou, 3 mâna Domnului va lovi cu molimă grea vitele de pe câmp: caii, măgarii, cămilele, cirezile şi turmele. 4 Dar Domnul va face deosebire între vitele lui Israel şi vitele Egiptului pentru ca nimic să nu moară din ce este al israeliţilor.’ 5 Domnul a hotărât o vreme, zicând că mâine va face acest lucru în ţară.»“ 6 În ziua următoare, Domnul a făcut întocmai: toate vitele egiptenilor au murit, dar din vitele israeliţilor n-a murit nici una. 7 Faraon a trimis pe cineva şi a aflat că nici una din vitele israeliţilor n-a murit. Inima lui Faraon însă a rămas împietrită şi tot nu a lăsat poporul să plece.

8 Domnul le-a zis din nou lui Moise şi lui Aaron: „Umpleţi-vă mâinile cu cenuşă din cuptor şi Moise să o arunce în aer înaintea lui Faraon. 9 Ea se va transforma într-un praf fin peste toată ţara Egiptului şi va cauza bube cu puroi pe oameni şi pe animale în toată ţara Egiptului.“ 10 Ei au luat cenuşă din cuptor şi s-au înfăţişat înaintea lui Faraon. Moise a aruncat-o înspre cer şi ea a dat naştere la bube cu puroi pe oameni şi pe animale. 11 Vrăjitorii n-au putut sta înaintea lui Moise din cauza bubelor, pentru că bubele erau şi pe vrăjitori, ca pe toţi egiptenii. 12 Dar Domnul i-a împietrit inima lui Faraon şi acesta nu i-a ascultat, după cum îi spusese Domnul lui Moise.

13 După aceea, Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: „Scoală-te dis-de-dimineaţă, du-te înaintea lui Faraon şi spune-i: «Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul evreilor: ‘Lasă-Mi poporul să plece ca să Mi se închine, 14 pentru că de data aceasta Îmi voi trimite toate urgiile împotriva ta, împotriva slujitorilor tăi şi împotriva poporului tău, ca să ştii că nu este nimeni ca Mine pe întreg pământul. 15 Căci, dacă Mi-aş fi întins mâna şi te-aş fi lovit pe tine şi pe poporul tău cu molimă, ai fi pierit de pe pământ. 16 Dar te-am ridicat[a] ca să-ţi arăt puterea Mea şi astfel Numele Meu să fie vestit pe întreg pământul. 17 Încă mai continui să te ridici împotriva poporului Meu ca să nu-l laşi să plece? 18 Ei bine, mâine, pe vremea aceasta, voi face să cadă cea mai grea grindină din câte au căzut vreodată în Egipt, de când a fost întemeiat până acum. 19 De aceea trimite oamenii ca să adăpostească, la loc sigur, vitele şi tot ce ai pe câmp; orice om şi orice animal care va fi pe câmp şi nu la adăpost va muri atunci când grindina va cădea peste el.’»“ 20 Aceia dintre slujitorii lui Faraon care s-au temut de Cuvântul Domnului şi-au adăpostit sclavii şi vitele în case, 21 dar cei care n-au luat în seamă Cuvântul Domnului şi-au lăsat sclavii şi vitele pe câmp. 22 Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: „Întinde-ţi mâna spre cer ca să cadă grindină peste toată ţara Egiptului: peste oameni, peste animale şi peste plantele câmpului din ţara Egiptului.“ 23 Când Moise şi-a întins toiagul spre cer, Domnul a trimis o furtună cu grindină şi trăsnete care au căzut pe pământ. Domnul a făcut să cadă grindină peste ţara Egiptului: 24 era grindină amestecată cu trăsnete, o grindină atât de grea, cum n-a mai căzut niciodată în ţara Egiptului, de când aceasta a fost întemeiată ca neam. 25 Grindina a doborât la pământ tot ce era pe câmp în toată ţara Egiptului, atât oameni, cât şi animale; grindina a doborât la pământ toate plantele câmpului şi a frânt orice copac de pe câmp. 26 Singurul loc în care n-a căzut grindină a fost ţinutul Goşen[b], unde locuiau israeliţii. 27 Faraon şi-a trimis slujitorii să-i cheme pe Moise şi pe Aaron şi le-a zis:

– De data aceasta am păcătuit; Domnul este drept, eu şi poporul meu suntem răi. 28 Rugaţi-vă Domnului, căci ne este de ajuns trăsnetul şi grindina lui Dumnezeu! Vă las să plecaţi; nu mai trebuie să staţi.

29 Moise i-a răspuns:

– Cum voi ieşi din cetate, îmi voi ridica mâinile spre Domnul; trăsnetul nu va mai lovi şi nu va mai cădea grindină, ca să recunoşti că pământul este al Domnului. 30 Cât despre tine şi slujitorii tăi, ştiu că încă nu vă temeţi de Domnul Dumnezeu.

31 Plantaţiile de in şi de orz au fost distruse, pentru că orzul dăduse în spic şi inul înflorise, 32 însă cele de grâu şi secară albă n-au păţit nimic, pentru că erau sădite târziu. 33 Moise l-a lăsat pe Faraon, a ieşit din cetate şi şi-a ridicat mâinile spre Domnul; atunci trăsnetul şi grindina au încetat şi n-a mai plouat pe pământ. 34 Când Faraon a văzut că ploaia, grindina şi trăsnetul au încetat, a păcătuit din nou şi şi-a împietrit inima atât el, cât şi slujitorii săi. 35 Inima lui Faraon s-a împietrit şi nu i-a lăsat pe israeliţi să plece, după cum îi spusese Domnul lui Moise.

Plague Five: Livestock Death

9 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, “Release my people so that they may serve me.” 2 But if you are refusing to release and you still are keeping hold of them, 3 look, the hand of Yahweh is about to be present with a very severe[a] plague on your livestock that are in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the cattle, and on the sheep and goats. 4 But Yahweh will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, and not a thing will die from all that belongs to the Israelites.’”[b] 5 And Yahweh set an appointed time, saying, “Tomorrow Yahweh will do this thing in the land.”

6 And Yahweh did this thing the next day; all the livestock of Egypt died, but from the livestock of the Israelites[c] not one died. 7 And Pharaoh sent to check, and it turned out[d] not even one from the livestock of Israel had died, but Pharaoh’s heart was insensitive,[e] and he did not release the people.

Plague Six: Painful Sores

8 And Yahweh said to Moses and to Aaron, “Take for yourselves full handfuls of soot from a smelting furnace, and let Moses sprinkle it toward the heavens before the eyes of Pharaoh. 9 And it will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and it will become on humans and on animals a skin sore sprouting blisters in all the land of Egypt.” 10 And they took the soot of the smelting furnace, and they stood before Pharaoh, and Moses sprinkled it toward the heavens, and it became skin sores sprouting blisters on humans and on animals. 11 And the magicians were not able to stand before Moses because of the skin sores, for the skin sores were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians. 12 And Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken to Moses.

Plague Seven: Hail

13 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Start early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh. Look, he is going out to the water, and you must say to him, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, “Release my people so that they may serve me. 14 For at this time I am sending all of my plagues to you personally[f] and among your servants and among your people so that you will know that there is no one like me in all the earth. 15 For now I could have stretched out my hand, and I could have struck you and your people with the plague, and you would have perished from the earth. 16 But for the sake of this I have caused you to stand—for the sake of showing you my strength and in order to proclaim my name in all the earth. 17 Still you are behaving haughtily to my people by not releasing them. 18 Look, about this time tomorrow, I am going to cause very severe[g] hail to rain, the like of which has not been in Egypt from the day it was founded until now. 19 And now send word; bring into safety your livestock and all that belongs to you in the field. The hail will come down on every human and animal that is found in the field and not gathered into the house, and they will die.”’”

20 Anyone from the servants of Pharaoh who feared the word of Yahweh caused his servants and livestock to flee to the houses. 21 But whoever did not give regard to[h] the word of Yahweh abandoned his servants and his livestock in the field.

22 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand to the heavens, and let there be hail in all the land of Egypt, on human and on animal and on all the vegetation of the field in the land of Egypt.” 23 And Moses stretched out his staff to the heavens, and Yahweh gave thunder[i] and hail, and fire went to the earth, and Yahweh caused hail to rain on the land of Egypt. 24 And there was hail, and fire was flashing back and forth in the midst of the very severe hail, the like of which was not in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation. 25 And the hail struck in all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, from human to animal, and the hail struck all the vegetation of the field and smashed every tree of the field. 26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the Israelites[j] were, there was no hail.

27 And Pharaoh sent and called Moses and Aaron and said to them, “I have sinned this time. Yahweh is the righteous one, and I and my people are the wicked ones. 28 Pray to Yahweh. The thunder of God and hail are enough,[k] and I will release you, and you will no longer have to stay.”[l] 29 And Moses said to him, “At my leaving the city, I will spread out my hands to Yahweh. The thunder will stop, and the hail will be no more, so that you will know that the earth belongs to Yahweh. 30 But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear the presence of Yahweh God.”

31 And the flax and the barley were struck, because the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bud. 32 But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, because they are late-ripening.

33 And Moses went from Pharaoh out of the city, and he spread his hands to Yahweh, and the thunder and the hail stopped, and rain did not pour on the earth. 34 And Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunder stopped, and he again sinned[m] and made his heart insensitive,[n] he and his servants. 35 And Pharaoh’s heart was hard, and he did not release the Israelites,[o] as Yahweh had said by the agency of Moses.[p]

The Plague on Livestock

9 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: “Let my people go, so that they may worship(A) me.” 2 If you refuse to let them go and continue to hold them back, 3 the hand(B) of the Lord will bring a terrible plague(C) on your livestock in the field—on your horses, donkeys and camels and on your cattle, sheep and goats. 4 But the Lord will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and that of Egypt,(D) so that no animal belonging to the Israelites will die.’”

5 The Lord set a time and said, “Tomorrow the Lord will do this in the land.” 6 And the next day the Lord did it: All the livestock(E) of the Egyptians died,(F) but not one animal belonging to the Israelites died. 7 Pharaoh investigated and found that not even one of the animals of the Israelites had died. Yet his heart(G) was unyielding and he would not let the people go.(H)

The Plague of Boils

8 Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from a furnace and have Moses toss it into the air in the presence of Pharaoh. 9 It will become fine dust over the whole land of Egypt, and festering boils(I) will break out on people and animals throughout the land.”

10 So they took soot from a furnace and stood before Pharaoh. Moses tossed it into the air, and festering boils broke out on people and animals. 11 The magicians(J) could not stand before Moses because of the boils that were on them and on all the Egyptians. 12 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart(K) and he would not listen(L) to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said to Moses.

The Plague of Hail

13 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning, confront Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, so that they may worship(M) me, 14 or this time I will send the full force of my plagues against you and against your officials and your people, so you may know(N) that there is no one like(O) me in all the earth. 15 For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people(P) with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. 16 But I have raised you up[a] for this very purpose,(Q) that I might show you my power(R) and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. 17 You still set yourself against my people and will not let them go. 18 Therefore, at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm(S) that has ever fallen on Egypt, from the day it was founded till now.(T) 19 Give an order now to bring your livestock and everything you have in the field to a place of shelter, because the hail will fall on every person and animal that has not been brought in and is still out in the field, and they will die.’”

20 Those officials of Pharaoh who feared(U) the word of the Lord hurried to bring their slaves and their livestock inside. 21 But those who ignored(V) the word of the Lord left their slaves and livestock in the field.

22 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that hail will fall all over Egypt—on people and animals and on everything growing in the fields of Egypt.” 23 When Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, the Lord sent thunder(W) and hail,(X) and lightning flashed down to the ground. So the Lord rained hail on the land of Egypt; 24 hail fell and lightning flashed back and forth. It was the worst storm in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation.(Y) 25 Throughout Egypt hail struck everything in the fields—both people and animals; it beat down everything growing in the fields and stripped every tree.(Z) 26 The only place it did not hail was the land of Goshen,(AA) where the Israelites were.(AB)

27 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron. “This time I have sinned,”(AC) he said to them. “The Lord is in the right,(AD) and I and my people are in the wrong. 28 Pray(AE) to the Lord, for we have had enough thunder and hail. I will let you go;(AF) you don’t have to stay any longer.”

29 Moses replied, “When I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands(AG) in prayer to the Lord. The thunder will stop and there will be no more hail, so you may know that the earth(AH) is the Lord’s. 30 But I know that you and your officials still do not fear(AI) the Lord God.”

31 (The flax and barley(AJ) were destroyed, since the barley had headed and the flax was in bloom. 32 The wheat and spelt,(AK) however, were not destroyed, because they ripen later.)

33 Then Moses left Pharaoh and went out of the city. He spread out his hands toward the Lord; the thunder and hail stopped, and the rain no longer poured down on the land. 34 When Pharaoh saw that the rain and hail and thunder had stopped, he sinned again: He and his officials hardened their hearts. 35 So Pharaoh’s heart(AL) was hard and he would not let the Israelites go, just as the Lord had said through Moses.
