La loi sur l’exercice de la justice
23 Tu ne colporteras pas de rumeur sans fondement. Ne te rends pas complice d’un méchant par un faux témoignage[a]. 2 Ne suis pas la majorité pour faire le mal et, si tu es appelé à témoigner dans un procès, ne te conforme pas au grand nombre pour fausser le droit. 3 Ne favorise pas un pauvre dans un procès[b].
4 Si tu rencontres le bœuf de ton ennemi ou son âne égaré, tu ne manqueras pas de les lui ramener[c]. 5 Lorsque tu verras l’âne de celui qui te déteste succomber sous sa charge, et que tu n’auras pas envie d’aider cet homme, aide-le quand même à délester son âne.
6 Ne fausse pas le cours de la justice aux dépens du pauvre dans un procès[d]. 7 Ne te mêle pas d’une cause mensongère et ne cause pas la mort de l’innocent et du juste, car je ne tiendrai pas le coupable pour innocent. 8 Tu n’accepteras pas de pot-de-vin, car les présents aveuglent même des hommes lucides et compromettent la cause des justes.
9 Tu n’opprimeras pas l’étranger qui réside dans ton pays ; vous savez vous-mêmes ce qu’éprouve un étranger, puisque vous l’avez été en Egypte[e].
La loi sur les divers sabbats
10 Pendant six années tu ensemenceras ta terre et tu en récolteras les produits[f] ; 11 mais la septième année, tu la laisseras en jachère. Les pauvres de ton peuple mangeront ce qu’ils y trouveront et ce qu’ils laisseront nourrira les bêtes sauvages. Tu feras de même pour tes vignes et tes oliviers.
12 Pendant six jours, tu feras tout ton travail, mais le septième jour, tu l’interrompras pour que ton bœuf et ton âne jouissent du repos, et que le fils de ta servante et l’étranger puissent reprendre leur souffle[g].
13 Vous veillerez à observer tout ce que je vous ai prescrit. Vous n’invoquerez jamais des dieux étrangers ; qu’ils ne soient même pas nommés par vous.
La loi sur les trois grandes fêtes
14 Trois fois par an, tu célébreras une fête en mon honneur. 15 Tu célébreras la fête des Pains sans levain. Pendant sept jours, tu mangeras des pains sans levain au temps fixé, au mois des épis[h], comme je te l’ai ordonné, car c’est au cours de ce mois que tu es sorti d’Egypte. Tu ne te présenteras pas devant moi les mains vides[i]. 16 Tu célébreras aussi la fête de la Moisson[j] et des Premiers Fruits de ton travail, de ce que tu auras semé dans les champs. A la fin de l’année, tu célébreras aussi la fête de la Récolte[k], quand tu rentreras des champs le fruit de ton travail. 17 Trois fois l’an, tous les hommes viendront se présenter devant moi le Seigneur, l’Eternel.
18 Tu ne verseras pas le sang des sacrifices qui me sont offerts sur du pain levé, et tu ne conserveras pas jusqu’au matin la graisse des animaux offerts au cours des fêtes célébrées en mon honneur. 19 Tu apporteras au sanctuaire de l’Eternel ton Dieu les tout premiers produits de tes récoltes[l]. Tu ne feras pas cuire un chevreau dans le lait de sa mère[m].
Les perspectives en vue de la conquête
20 Je vais envoyer un ange devant vous pour vous protéger en chemin et vous conduire au lieu que j’ai préparé pour vous. 21 Respectez-le et obéissez-lui. Ne lui résistez pas, il ne tolérerait pas votre rébellion, car il est mon représentant. 22 Mais si vous lui obéissez pleinement et si vous faites tout ce que je vous ai ordonné, je serai l’ennemi de vos ennemis et l’adversaire de vos adversaires. 23 Car mon ange marchera devant vous et vous fera entrer dans le pays des Amoréens, des Hittites, des Phéréziens, des Cananéens, des Héviens et des Yebousiens, et je les exterminerai. 24 Vous n’adorerez pas leurs dieux et vous ne leur rendrez pas de culte, vous n’adopterez pas leurs pratiques religieuses. Au contraire, vous renverserez leurs statues et vous mettrez en pièces leurs stèles sacrées. 25 Vous rendrez votre culte à l’Eternel votre Dieu. Alors je vous bénirai en vous donnant une nourriture excellente et de l’eau en abondance, et je vous préserverai des maladies. 26 Il n’y aura pas dans votre pays de femme qui avorte ou qui soit stérile. Je vous ferai parvenir à un âge avancé.
27 Je sèmerai la panique devant vous, je mettrai en déroute tous les peuples chez lesquels vous entrerez, et je ferai s’enfuir tous vos ennemis devant vous. 28 J’enverrai devant vous les frelons pour chasser les Héviens, les Cananéens et les Hittites devant vous. 29 Cependant, je ne les chasserai pas en une seule année, pour que les terres ne soient pas abandonnées et que les bêtes sauvages ne s’y multiplient pas à vos dépens. 30 C’est petit à petit que je les déposséderai en votre faveur, au fur et à mesure que vous deviendrez assez nombreux pour occuper le pays. 31 Je fixerai vos frontières, et votre territoire s’étendra de la mer des Roseaux à la Méditerranée qui borde le pays des Philistins[n], et du désert du Sinaï à l’Euphrate, car je livrerai les habitants de cette région en votre pouvoir et vous les chasserez devant vous. 32 Vous ne contracterez pas d’alliance avec eux, ni avec leurs dieux. 33 Ils ne demeureront pas dans votre pays, afin qu’ils ne vous incitent pas à pécher contre moi en vous faisant rendre un culte à leurs dieux, car vous seriez alors pris à leur piège.

23 Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.
2 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:
3 Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause.
4 If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again.
5 If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.
6 Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause.
7 Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.
8 And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.
9 Also thou shalt not oppress a stranger: for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
10 And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof:

15 Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:)
16 And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field.
17 Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord God.
18 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning.
19 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.
20 Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.
21 Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.
22 But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.
23 For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off.
24 Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.
25 And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.
26 There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.
27 I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.
28 And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.
29 I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee.
30 By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land.
31 And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.
32 Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.

Gerechtigkeit und Nächstenliebe
23 Du sollst kein falsches Gerücht verbreiten[a]! Leihe keinem Gottlosen deine Hand, sodass du durch dein Zeugnis einen Frevel unterstützt.
2 Du sollst nicht der Menge folgen zum Bösen und sollst vor Gericht deine Aussagen nicht nach der Menge richten, um das Recht zu beugen.
3 Du sollst auch den Armen nicht begünstigen in seinem Rechtsstreit.
4 Wenn du das Rind deines Feindes oder seinen Esel antriffst, der sich verlaufen hat, so sollst du ihm denselben auf jeden Fall wiederbringen.
5 Siehst du den Esel deines Feindes unter seiner Last erliegen, könntest du es unterlassen, ihm zu helfen? Du sollst ihm samt jenem unbedingt aufhelfen!
6 Du sollst das Recht deines Armen nicht beugen in seinem Rechtsstreit.
7 Von einer betrügerischen Sache[b] halte dich fern, und den Unschuldigen und Gerechten bringe nicht um; denn ich spreche keinen Gottlosen gerecht.
8 Und nimm kein Bestechungsgeschenk an! Denn das Bestechungsgeschenk macht die Sehenden blind und verkehrt die Sache der Gerechten.
9 Und bedrücke den Fremdling nicht; denn ihr wisst, wie es den Fremdlingen zumute ist; denn ihr seid Fremdlinge gewesen im Land Ägypten.
Sabbatjahr und Sabbat
10 Sechs Jahre sollst du dein Land besäen und seinen Ertrag einsammeln;
11 aber im siebten sollst du es brachliegen und ruhen lassen, damit sich die Armen deines Volkes davon ernähren können; und was sie übrig lassen, das mögen die Tiere des Feldes fressen. Dasselbe sollst du mit deinem Weinberg und mit deinem Ölbaumgarten tun.
12 Sechs Tage sollst du deine Werke verrichten, aber am siebten Tag sollst du ruhen, damit dein Rind und dein Esel ausruhen und der Sohn deiner Magd und der Fremdling sich erholen können.
13 Habt sorgfältig acht auf alles, was ich euch befohlen habe! Und die Namen der fremden Götter sollt ihr nicht erwähnen; sie sollen gar nicht über eure Lippen kommen!
Die drei großen Jahresfeste
14 Dreimal im Jahr sollst du mir ein Fest feiern.
15 Das Fest der ungesäuerten Brote sollst du halten: Sieben Tage sollst du ungesäuertes Brot essen zur bestimmten Zeit im Monat Abib, so wie ich es dir befohlen habe; denn in diesem [Monat] bist du aus Ägypten ausgezogen. Und man soll nicht mit leeren Händen vor meinem Angesicht erscheinen.
16 Sodann das Fest der Ernte, wenn du die Erstlinge deiner Arbeit darbringst von dem, was du auf dem Feld gesät hast; und das Fest der Einbringung am Ausgang des Jahres, wenn du den Ertrag deiner Arbeit vom Feld eingebracht hast.[c]
17 Dreimal im Jahr sollen alle deine Männer erscheinen vor dem Angesicht Gottes, des Herrn![d]
18 Du sollst das Blut meiner Opfer nicht zusammen mit Sauerteig darbringen, und das Fett meiner Festopfer soll nicht bleiben bis zum anderen Morgen.
19 Die frühesten Erstlinge deines Ackers sollst du in das Haus des Herrn, deines Gottes, bringen. Du sollst ein Böcklein nicht in der Milch seiner Mutter kochen!
Mahnungen für die Besitznahme von Kanaan. Warnung vor dem Götzendienst
20 Siehe, ich sende einen Engel vor dir her, damit er dich behüte auf dem Weg und dich an den Ort bringe, den ich bereitet habe.
21 Hüte dich vor ihm und gehorche seiner Stimme und sei nicht widerspenstig gegen ihn; denn er wird eure Übertretungen nicht ertragen; denn mein Name ist in ihm.
22 Wenn du aber seiner Stimme wirklich gehorchen und alles tun wirst, was ich sage, so will ich der Feind deiner Feinde sein und der Widersacher deiner Widersacher.
23 Wenn nun mein Engel vor dir hergeht und dich zu den Amoritern, Hetitern, Pheresitern, Kanaanitern, Hewitern und Jebusitern bringt und ich sie vertilge,
24 so sollst du ihre Götter nicht anbeten, noch ihnen dienen, und sollst es nicht machen wie sie; sondern du sollst sie vollständig zerstören und ihre Säulen ganz niederreißen.
25 Und ihr sollt dem Herrn, eurem Gott, dienen, so wird er dein Brot und dein Wasser segnen; und ich will die Krankheit aus deiner Mitte hinwegnehmen.
26 Es soll keine Fehlgebärende oder Unfruchtbare in deinem Land sein; ich will die Zahl deiner Tage vollmachen.
27 Ich will meinen Schrecken vor dir hersenden und will alle Völker in Verwirrung bringen, zu denen du kommst, und will alle deine Feinde vor dir fliehen lassen.
28 Ich will die Hornisse[e] vor dir hersenden, damit sie die Hewiter, die Kanaaniter und Hetiter vor dir her vertreibt.
29 Ich will sie aber nicht in einem Jahr vor dir vertreiben, damit das Land nicht zur Einöde wird und die wilden Tiere sich nicht vermehren zu deinem Schaden.
30 Nach und nach will ich sie vor dir vertreiben, in dem Maß, wie du an Zahl zunimmst, sodass du das Land in Besitz nehmen kannst.
31 Und ich setze deine Grenze vom Schilfmeer bis zum Meer der Philister und von der Wüste bis zum Strom [Euphrat]; denn ich will die Bewohner des Landes in eure Hand geben, dass du sie vor dir vertreibst.
32 Du sollst mit ihnen und mit ihren Göttern keinen Bund schließen!
33 Sie sollen nicht in deinem Land wohnen bleiben, damit sie dich nicht zur Sünde gegen mich verleiten; denn du würdest ihren Göttern dienen, und sie würden dir zum Fallstrick werden!

23 “Do not spread false reports.(A) Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness.(B)
2 “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice(C) by siding with the crowd,(D) 3 and do not show favoritism(E) to a poor person in a lawsuit.
4 “If you come across your enemy’s(F) ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to return it.(G) 5 If you see the donkey(H) of someone who hates you fallen down under its load, do not leave it there; be sure you help them with it.
6 “Do not deny justice(I) to your poor people in their lawsuits. 7 Have nothing to do with a false charge(J) and do not put an innocent(K) or honest person to death,(L) for I will not acquit the guilty.(M)
8 “Do not accept a bribe,(N) for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the innocent.
9 “Do not oppress a foreigner;(O) you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners, because you were foreigners in Egypt.
Sabbath Laws
10 “For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, 11 but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused.(P) Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what is left. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove.
12 “Six days do your work,(Q) but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and so that the slave born in your household and the foreigner living among you may be refreshed.(R)
13 “Be careful(S) to do everything I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods;(T) do not let them be heard on your lips.(U)
The Three Annual Festivals
14 “Three times(V) a year you are to celebrate a festival to me.
15 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread;(W) for seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv,(X) for in that month you came out of Egypt.
“No one is to appear before me empty-handed.(Y)
16 “Celebrate the Festival of Harvest(Z) with the firstfruits(AA) of the crops you sow in your field.
“Celebrate the Festival of Ingathering(AB) at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field.(AC)
17 “Three times(AD) a year all the men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord.

“The fat of my festival offerings must not be kept until morning.(AF)

God’s Angel to Prepare the Way
20 “See, I am sending an angel(AI) ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.(AJ) 21 Pay attention to him and listen(AK) to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive(AL) your rebellion,(AM) since my Name(AN) is in him. 22 If you listen carefully to what he says and do(AO) all that I say, I will be an enemy(AP) to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. 23 My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites,(AQ) and I will wipe them out. 24 Do not bow down before their gods or worship(AR) them or follow their practices.(AS) You must demolish(AT) them and break their sacred stones(AU) to pieces. 25 Worship the Lord your God,(AV) and his blessing(AW) will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness(AX) from among you, 26 and none will miscarry or be barren(AY) in your land. I will give you a full life span.(AZ)
27 “I will send my terror(BA) ahead of you and throw into confusion(BB) every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run.(BC) 28 I will send the hornet(BD) ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites(BE) out of your way. 29 But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals(BF) too numerous for you. 30 Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession(BG) of the land.
31 “I will establish your borders from the Red Sea[a] to the Mediterranean Sea,[b] and from the desert to the Euphrates River.(BH) I will give into your hands the people who live in the land, and you will drive them out(BI) before you. 32 Do not make a covenant(BJ) with them or with their gods. 33 Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare(BK) to you.”
