L’arrivée au mont Sinaï
19 Le troisième mois après leur départ d’Egypte, ce jour même, les Israélites arrivèrent au désert du Sinaï[a]. 2 Après être partis de Rephidim, ils entrèrent dans ce désert et y dressèrent leur camp en face de la montagne.
Dieu adopte Israël
3 Moïse gravit la montagne pour aller vers Dieu. D’en haut, Dieu l’appela et lui dit : Voici comment tu parleras aux descendants de Jacob et ce que tu annonceras aux Israélites : 4 « Vous avez vu vous-mêmes comment j’ai traité les Egyptiens et comment je vous ai portés comme sur des ailes d’aigle pour vous faire venir jusqu’à moi[b]. 5 Maintenant, si vous m’obéissez et si vous restez fidèles à mon alliance, vous serez pour moi un peuple précieux parmi tous les peuples, bien que toute la terre m’appartienne. 6 Oui vous, vous serez pour moi un royaume de prêtres, une nation sainte. » Telles sont les paroles que tu transmettras aux Israélites[c].
7 Moïse retourna au camp, convoqua les responsables du peuple et leur transmit toutes les paroles de l’Eternel. 8 Alors le peuple s’écria à l’unanimité : Nous ferons tout ce que l’Eternel a dit.
Moïse rapporta à l’Eternel la réponse du peuple.
9 L’Eternel dit à Moïse : Voici que je viendrai te trouver au sein d’une épaisse nuée pour que le peuple entende lorsque je parlerai avec toi et qu’ils aient pour toujours confiance en toi.
Et Moïse rapporta à l’Eternel les paroles du peuple.
La purification rituelle
10 L’Eternel dit à Moïse : Va trouver le peuple et demande-lui d’accomplir aujourd’hui et demain des rites de purification et de laver leurs vêtements. 11 Qu’ils se tiennent prêts pour après-demain, car ce jour-là, je descendrai sur le mont Sinaï à la vue de tout le peuple. 12 Tu leur fixeras des limites autour de la montagne et tu leur donneras cet avertissement : « Gardez-vous bien de gravir cette montagne et même de vous en approcher ; quiconque s’en approchera sera puni de mort. 13 Si quelqu’un transgresse cet ordre, on ne le touchera pas, mais on le lapidera ou on le percera de flèches. Qu’il s’agisse d’une bête ou d’un homme, il ne restera pas en vie. C’est seulement lorsque la corne du bélier sonnera que certains[d] monteront sur la montagne[e]. »
14 Moïse redescendit de la montagne vers le peuple pour lui faire accomplir les rites de purification. Ils lavèrent aussi leurs vêtements. 15 Puis il leur dit : Tenez-vous prêts pour après-demain. Abstenez-vous d’ici-là de tout rapport sexuel[f].
L’Eternel descend sur le mont Sinaï
16 Le surlendemain, dès le lever du jour, il y eut des coups de tonnerre et des éclairs, une épaisse nuée couvrit la montagne et l’on entendit un son de corne très puissant. Dans le camp, tout le peuple se mit à trembler de peur. 17 Moïse fit sortir tout le monde du camp, à la rencontre de Dieu. Ils se tinrent au pied de la montagne. 18 Le mont Sinaï était entièrement enveloppé de fumée parce que l’Eternel était descendu là au milieu du feu, et la fumée s’élevait comme celle d’une fournaise. Toute la montagne était secouée d’un violent tremblement de terre. 19 Le son du cor allait en s’amplifiant énormément. Moïse parlait, et Dieu lui répondait dans le tonnerre[g]. 20 L’Eternel était descendu sur le sommet du mont Sinaï, et il y appela Moïse. Moïse monta.
21 L’Eternel lui dit : Redescends avertir le peuple de ne pas se précipiter vers l’Eternel pour le voir, car beaucoup d’entre eux y perdraient la vie. 22 Même les prêtres[h] qui s’approchent de moi doivent se purifier, sous peine de voir l’Eternel décimer leurs rangs.
23 Moïse dit à l’Eternel : Le peuple ne saurait gravir le mont Sinaï puisque tu nous as toi-même prescrit de fixer des limites autour de la montagne et de la tenir pour sacrée.
24 L’Eternel lui répéta : Va, redescends, et puis tu remonteras avec Aaron. Mais que les prêtres et le peuple ne se précipitent pas pour monter vers moi, de peur que je ne décime leurs rangs.
25 Moïse redescendit vers le peuple pour lui parler.

- 19.1 Le mot Sinaï désigne tantôt la montagne, tantôt le désert au sud-est de la péninsule. Les Israélites sont restés là près d’une année.
- 19.4 La femelle de l’aigle porte ses petits sur ses ailes pendant son vol (voir Dt 32.11). Allusion à la manière dont Dieu a fait surmonter les difficultés à son peuple, en particulier en lui faisant traverser la barrière apparemment infranchissable de la mer des Roseaux.

19 Los israelitas llegaron al desierto de Sinaí, tres meses después de su salida de Egipto. 2-3 Levantaron el campamento en Refidín, y continuaron su viaje. Cuando llegaron al pie del monte Sinaí, establecieron allí su campamento. Moisés subió al monte para encontrarse con Dios, y desde la cima el Señor lo llamó y le dijo: «Esto es lo que les dirás a los israelitas, los descendientes de Jacob: 4 “Ustedes han visto lo que hice con los egipcios, y cómo los traje a ustedes con tanto cuidado, como cuando las águilas llevan sobre sus alas a sus polluelos. 5 Ahora, pues, si oyen mi voz y guardan mi pacto, serán mi principal tesoro entre todas las naciones de la tierra, porque toda la tierra es mía. 6 Y serán un reino de sacerdotes y gente santa”».
7 Moisés descendió del monte, llamó a todos los dirigentes del pueblo y les dijo lo que el Señor le había dicho. 8 Le respondieron unánimes: «Haremos siempre todo lo que él nos pida».
Y Moisés le refirió al Señor la respuesta del pueblo. 9 El Señor le dijo, a Moisés:
―Yo voy a presentarme delante de ti en forma de una nube oscura, de modo que el pueblo mismo pueda oírme cuando hable contigo, y así siempre te creerán. 10 Desciende ahora y haz que el pueblo se prepare para mi visita. Santifícalos hoy y mañana; y haz que laven su ropa. 11 Luego, pasado mañana, descenderé sobre el monte Sinaí, mientras el pueblo observa. 12 Establece límites para que la gente no pase, y diles: “No suban al monte ni toquen sus límites. 13 Si algún hombre o animal lo hace, nadie tocará al ofensor, sino que morirá a pedradas o a flechazos. Permanezcan alejados del monte. Sólo cuando oigan el toque largo de trompeta, podrán subir a la montaña”.
14 Moisés descendió al pueblo y lo santificó, y ellos lavaron su ropa. 15 Luego Moisés les dijo: «Prepárense para encontrarse con Dios pasado mañana, y no tengan relaciones sexuales».
16 En la mañana del tercer día hubo una terrible tormenta de relámpagos y truenos. Una densa nube descendió sobre el monte, y hubo un largo toque de trompeta, y todo el pueblo tembló. 17 Moisés los hizo salir del campamento para ir al encuentro de Dios, y los dejó al pie del monte. 18 Todo el monte Sinaí estaba cubierto de humo, porque el Señor había descendido en forma de fuego. El humo subía al cielo como si saliera de un horno, y todo el monte temblaba como sacudido por un violento terremoto; 19 y el toque de trompeta era cada vez más fuerte. Moisés hablaba con Dios, y él le respondía con voz de trueno.
20 El Señor bajó a la cumbre del monte Sinaí, y llamó a Moisés para que subiera. Entonces Moisés subió, 21 y el Señor le dijo:
―Desciende, y advierte al pueblo que no debe cruzar los límites. Nadie debe subir hasta aquí para tratar de verme, porque morirá. 22 Aun los sacerdotes que estén de turno deben santificarse para que no los destruya.
23 ―Pero el pueblo no subirá al monte —contestó Moisés—. Tú les dijiste que no lo hicieran. Me dijiste que estableciera límites alrededor del monte, y que les avisara que el terreno que estaba a este lado de los límites estaba reservado para ti.
24 El Señor le dijo:
―Desciende y trae a Aarón contigo. Pero nadie más debe subir al monte, ni siquiera los sacerdotes, pues quien lo haga se expone a mi castigo.
25 Moisés bajó del monte, y les dijo a los israelitas lo que el Señor le había comunicado.

19 In the third month of the going of Israel out of the land of Egypt, in this day they came into the wilderness of Sinai; (In the third month of Israel going out of the land of Egypt, on this day they came into the Sinai Desert;)
2 for they went forth from Rephidim, and came till into the desert of Sinai, and they setted tents in the same place; and there Israel setted tents, even against the hill (and Israel pitched their tents there, opposite the mountain).
3 Forsooth Moses went up into the hill to God; and the Lord called him from the mount, and said, Thou shalt say these things to the house of Jacob, and thou shalt tell to the sons of Israel, (And Moses went up the mountain to meet with God/And Moses went up God’s mountain; and the Lord called to him from the mount, and said, Thou shalt say these things to the house of Jacob, and thou shalt tell it to the Israelites,)
4 Ye yourselves have seen what things I have done to [the] Egyptians, how I bare you on the wings of eagles, and took you to me (and brought you here to me).
5 Therefore if ye shall hear my voice, and shall keep my covenant, ye shall be to me into a specialty of all peoples (ye shall be special to me out of all peoples), that is, a thing loved excellently; for all the earth is mine;
6 and ye shall be to me into a realm of priesthood, and an holy folk; these be the words which thou shalt speak to the sons of Israel. (and ye shall be my kingdom of priests, and my holy nation; these be the words which thou shalt say to the Israelites.)
7 Moses came, and when the greater men in birth of the people were called together, he expounded all the words which the Lord commanded him. (Moses came back down, and when the men of great age, that is, the elders, of the people were called together, he expounded all the words which the Lord commanded him to say.)
8 And all the people answered together, (and said,) We shall do all [the] things which the Lord hath spoken. And when Moses had told the words of the people to the Lord,
9 the Lord said to him, Right now I shall come to thee in the darkness of a cloud, (so) that the people hear me speaking to thee, and believe to thee [into] without end (and then they shall always believe thee). Therefore Moses told the words of the people to the Lord,
10 which said to Moses (who said to Moses), Go thou (back) to the people, and make them holy today and tomorrow, and wash they their clothes,
11 and be they ready into the third day; for in the third day the Lord shall come down before all the people on the hill of Sinai. (and be they ready by the third day; for on the third day the Lord shall come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.)
12 And thou shalt set terms to the people, by compass; and thou shalt say to them, Be ye ware, that ye go not up into the hill, neither touch ye the ends thereof; each man that shall touch the hill, shall die by death. (And thou shalt set a boundary for the people, all around the mountain; and thou shalt say to them, Beware, that ye go not up onto the mountain, nor even touch its edges; for anyone who shall touch the mountain, shall die.)
13 Hands shall not touch him, but he shall be oppressed with stones, or he shall be pierced with darts; whether it shall be a beast, or a man, it shall not live; (but) when a clarion shall begin to sound, then go they up into the hill. (No hands shall touch him, but he shall be thrown down with stones, or shall be pierced with arrows; whether it be a beast, or a person, they shall not live; but when the trumpet shall begin to sound, then the people can come up onto the mountain.)
14 And Moses came down from the hill to the people, and hallowed it (And so Moses came down from the mountain to the people, and hallowed them); and when they had washed their clothes,
15 he said to them, Be ye ready into the third day (Be ye ready by the third day); nigh ye not to your wives.
16 And now the third day was come, and the morrowtide was clear; and, lo! thunders began to be heard, and lightnings to shine, and a most thick cloud to cover the mountain; and the sounding of a clarion made noise full greatly, and the people dreaded, that was in the tents (and the sounding of a trumpet made a very great noise, and the people in their tents had great fear).
17 And when Moses had led them out into the coming of God, from the place of the tents, they stood at the roots of the hill. (And when Moses had led them out from the place of the tents to meet with God, they stood at the foot of the mountain.)
18 Forsooth all the hill of Sinai smoked, for the Lord had come down thereon in fire; and the smoke thereof went up as of a furnace, and all the hill was fearful; (And all of Mount Sinai smoked, for the Lord had come down on it in fire; and its smoke went up like that of a furnace, and all the mountain fearfully shook;)
19 and the sound of a clarion increased little and little, and it was holden forth longer (and longer). (And) Moses spake, and the Lord answered him (with a clap of thunder/by a voice),
20 and the Lord came down on the hill of Sinai, in that top of the hill (and the Lord came down on Mount Sinai, onto the top of the mountain), and he called Moses (up) to the top thereof. And when he had gone up thither,
21 the Lord said to him, Go thou down, and witness thou to the people, lest peradventure it will pass [over] the terms to see the Lord (lest they pass over the boundary to see the Lord), and [a] full great multitude thereof perish;
22 and [the] priests, that nigh to the Lord, be they hallowed, lest I smite them (or I shall strike them down).
23 And Moses said to the Lord, The common people may not go up into the hill of Sinai; for thou hast witnessed, and hast commanded, saying, Set thou terms about the hill, and hallow it. (And Moses said to the Lord, The common people cannot come up onto Mount Sinai; for thou hast witnessed, and hast commanded, saying, Set thou a sacred boundary all around the mountain, and hallow it, and they have heard thee.)
24 To whom the Lord said, Go thou down, and (then) thou shalt go up, and (bring) Aaron with thee; forsooth the priests and the people pass not (over) the terms, neither go they up to the Lord, lest peradventure he slay them. (To whom the Lord said, Go thou down, and then come back up, and bring Aaron with thee; but the priests and the people must not pass over the boundary, nor let them come up to the Lord, lest I kill them.)
25 (And so) Moses went down to the people, and told all (these) things to them.
