17 以色列全体会众都照着耶和华的吩咐，一站一站，从汛的旷野起程，在利非订安营。在那里人民没有水喝。 2 因此人民与摩西争吵，说：“给我们水喝吧。”摩西对他们说：“你们为甚么与我争吵呢？你们为甚么试探耶和华呢？” 3 人民在那里渴望得水喝，就向摩西发怨言，说：“你为甚么把我们从埃及领上来，使我们和我们的儿女，以及我们的牲畜都渴死呢？” 4 摩西向耶和华呼求，说：“我要怎样对待这人民呢？他们几乎要用石头打死我了。” 5 耶和华回答摩西：“你要到人民的面前，要带着以色列的几个长老和你一起，手里要拿着你先前击打河水的杖。 6 看哪，我必在何烈山那里的盘石上站在你面前；你要击打盘石，就必有水从盘石流出来，使人民可以喝。”摩西就在以色列的长老眼前这样行了。 7 他给那地方起名叫玛撒，又叫米利巴，因为以色列人在那里争吵，又因为他们试探耶和华，说：“耶和华是不是在我们中间呢？”
与亚玛力人作战
8 那时亚玛力人来了，在利非订和以色列人争战。 9 摩西对约书亚说：“你要为我们选出人来，出去和亚玛力人争战；明天我要站在山顶上，手里拿着 神的杖。” 10 于是，约书亚照着摩西吩咐他的行了，去和亚玛力人争战；摩西、亚伦和户珥都上了山顶。 11 摩西举起手来的时候，以色列人就得胜；摩西把手放下来的时候，亚玛力人就得胜。 12 可是摩西的两手疲乏了，他们就搬块石头来，放在摩西下面，他就坐在上面；亚伦和户珥，一边一个，扶着摩西的两手；这样，他的两手就稳住，直到日落的时候。 13 约书亚用刀打败了亚玛力王和他的人民。
14 耶和华对摩西说：“我要把亚玛力的名号从天下完全抹掉；你要把话写在书上作记念，也要告诉约书亚。” 15 摩西筑了一座祭坛，给它起名叫“耶和华尼西”。 16 摩西又说：“向耶和华的旌旗举手，耶和华必世世代代和亚玛力人争战。”

Water from the Rock
17 (A)All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 (B)Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you (C)test the Lord?” 3 But the people thirsted there for water, and (D)the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” 4 So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready (E)to stone me.” 5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with (F)which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 (G)Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the name of the place (H)Massah[a] and (I)Meribah,[b] because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Israel Defeats Amalek
8 (J)Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. 9 So Moses said to (K)Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with (L)the staff of God in my hand.” 10 So (M)Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and (N)Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 Whenever Moses (O)held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and (P)Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 And (Q)Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of (R)Joshua, that (S)I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses (T)built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner, 16 saying, “A hand upon the throne[c] of the Lord! (U)The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
