L’eau du rocher à Horeb
17 Toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël partit du désert de Sin, selon les marches que l’Eternel leur avait ordonnées; et ils campèrent à Rephidim, où le peuple ne trouva point d’eau à boire. 2 Alors le peuple chercha querelle à Moïse. Ils dirent: Donnez-nous de l’eau à boire. Moïse leur répondit: Pourquoi me cherchez-vous querelle? Pourquoi tentez-vous l’Eternel? 3 Le peuple était là, pressé par la soif, et murmurait contre Moïse. Il disait: Pourquoi nous as-tu fait monter hors d’Egypte, pour nous faire mourir de soif, moi, mes enfants et mes troupeaux? 4 Moïse cria à l’Eternel, en disant: Que ferai-je à ce peuple? Encore un peu, et ils me lapideront. 5 L’Eternel dit à Moïse: Passe devant le peuple, et prends avec toi des anciens d’Israël; prends aussi dans ta main ta verge avec laquelle tu as frappé le fleuve, et marche! 6 Voici, je me tiendrai devant toi sur le rocher d’Horeb; tu frapperas le rocher, et il en sortira de l’eau, et le peuple boira. Et Moïse fit ainsi, aux yeux des anciens d’Israël. 7 Il donna à ce lieu le nom de Massa et Meriba[a], parce que les enfants d’Israël avaient contesté, et parce qu’ils avaient tenté l’Eternel, en disant: L’Eternel est-il au milieu de nous, ou n’y est-il pas?
Victoire sur Amalek
8 Amalek vint combattre Israël à Rephidim. 9 Alors Moïse dit à Josué: Choisis-nous des hommes, sors, et combats Amalek; demain je me tiendrai sur le sommet de la colline, la verge de Dieu dans ma main. 10 Josué fit ce que lui avait dit Moïse, pour combattre Amalek. Et Moïse, Aaron et Hur montèrent au sommet de la colline. 11 Lorsque Moïse élevait sa main, Israël était le plus fort; et lorsqu’il baissait sa main, Amalek était le plus fort. 12 Les mains de Moïse étant fatiguées, ils prirent une pierre qu’ils placèrent sous lui, et il s’assit dessus. Aaron et Hur soutenaient ses mains, l’un d’un côté, l’autre de l’autre; et ses mains restèrent fermes jusqu’au coucher du soleil. 13 Et Josué vainquit Amalek et son peuple, au tranchant de l’épée.
14 L’Eternel dit à Moïse: Ecris cela dans le livre, pour que le souvenir s’en conserve, et déclare à Josué que j’effacerai la mémoire d’Amalek de dessous les cieux.
15 Moïse bâtit un autel, et lui donna pour nom: l’Eternel ma bannière. 16 Il dit: Parce que la main a été levée sur le trône de l’Eternel, il y aura guerre de l’Eternel contre Amalek, de génération en génération.

Water from the Rock
17 (A)All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 (B)Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you (C)test the Lord?” 3 But the people thirsted there for water, and (D)the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” 4 So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready (E)to stone me.” 5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with (F)which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 (G)Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the name of the place (H)Massah[a] and (I)Meribah,[b] because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Israel Defeats Amalek
8 (J)Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. 9 So Moses said to (K)Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with (L)the staff of God in my hand.” 10 So (M)Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and (N)Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 Whenever Moses (O)held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and (P)Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 And (Q)Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of (R)Joshua, that (S)I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses (T)built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner, 16 saying, “A hand upon the throne[c] of the Lord! (U)The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

17 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin,(A) traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim,(B) but there was no water(C) for the people to drink. 2 So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water(D) to drink.”(E)
Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”(F)
3 But the people were thirsty(G) for water there, and they grumbled(H) against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die(I) of thirst?”
4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone(J) me.”
5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff(K) with which you struck the Nile,(L) and go. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.(M) Strike(N) the rock, and water(O) will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah[a](P) and Meribah[b](Q) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
The Amalekites Defeated
8 The Amalekites(R) came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.(S) 9 Moses said to Joshua,(T) “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff(U) of God in my hands.”
10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur(V) went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning,(W) but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.(X) 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite(Y) army with the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write(Z) this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out(AA) the name of Amalek(AB) from under heaven.”
15 Moses built an altar(AC) and called(AD) it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against[c] the throne of the Lord,[d] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites(AE) from generation to generation.”(AF)
