Les cailles et la manne
16 Toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël partit d’Elim, et ils arrivèrent au désert de Sin, qui est entre Elim et Sinaï, le quinzième jour du second mois après leur sortie du pays d’Egypte. 2 Et toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël murmura dans le désert contre Moïse et Aaron. 3 Les enfants d’Israël leur dirent: Que ne sommes-nous morts par la main de l’Eternel dans le pays d’Egypte, quand nous étions assis près des pots de viande, quand nous mangions du pain à satiété? Car vous nous avez menés dans ce désert pour faire mourir de faim toute cette multitude.
4 L’Eternel dit à Moïse: Voici, je ferai pleuvoir pour vous du pain, du haut des cieux. Le peuple sortira, et en ramassera, jour par jour, la quantité nécessaire, afin que je le mette à l’épreuve, et que je voie s’il marchera, ou non, selon ma loi. 5 Le sixième jour, lorsqu’ils prépareront ce qu’ils auront apporté, il s’en trouvera le double de ce qu’ils ramasseront jour par jour.
6 Moïse et Aaron dirent à tous les enfants d’Israël: Ce soir, vous comprendrez que c’est l’Eternel qui vous a fait sortir du pays d’Egypte. 7 Et, au matin, vous verrez la gloire de l’Eternel, parce qu’il a entendu vos murmures contre l’Eternel; car que sommes-nous, pour que vous murmuriez contre nous? 8 Moïse dit: L’Eternel vous donnera ce soir de la viande à manger, et au matin du pain à satiété, parce que l’Eternel a entendu les murmures que vous avez proférés contre lui; car que sommes-nous? Ce n’est pas contre nous que sont vos murmures, c’est contre l’Eternel.
9 Moïse dit à Aaron: Dis à toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël: Approchez-vous devant l’Eternel, car il a entendu vos murmures. 10 Et tandis qu’Aaron parlait à toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël, ils se tournèrent du côté du désert, et voici, la gloire de l’Eternel parut dans la nuée. 11 L’Eternel, s’adressant à Moïse, dit: 12 J’ai entendu les murmures des enfants d’Israël. Dis-leur: Entre les deux soirs vous mangerez de la viande, et au matin vous vous rassasierez de pain; et vous saurez que je suis l’Eternel, votre Dieu.
13 Le soir, il survint des cailles qui couvrirent le camp; et, au matin, il y eut une couche de rosée autour du camp. 14 Quand cette rosée fut dissipée, il y avait à la surface du désert quelque chose de menu comme des grains, quelque chose de menu comme la gelée blanche sur la terre. 15 Les enfants d’Israël regardèrent et ils se dirent l’un à l’autre: Qu’est-ce que cela? car ils ne savaient pas ce que c’était. Moïse leur dit: C’est le pain que L’Eternel vous donne pour nourriture. 16 Voici ce que l’Eternel a ordonné: Que chacun de vous en ramasse ce qu’il faut pour sa nourriture, un omer par tête, suivant le nombre de vos personnes; chacun en prendra pour ceux qui sont dans sa tente.
17 Les Israélites firent ainsi; et ils en ramassèrent les uns en plus, les autres moins. 18 On mesurait ensuite avec l’omer; celui qui avait ramassé plus n’avait rien de trop, et celui qui avait ramassé moins n’en manquait pas[a]. Chacun ramassait ce qu’il fallait pour sa nourriture. 19 Moïse leur dit: Que personne n’en laisse jusqu’au matin. 20 Ils n’écoutèrent pas Moïse, et il y eut des gens qui en laissèrent jusqu’au matin; mais il s’y mit des vers, et cela devint infect. Moïse fut irrité contre ces gens. 21 Tous les matins, chacun ramassait ce qu’il fallait pour sa nourriture; et quand venait la chaleur du soleil, cela fondait.
22 Le sixième jour, ils ramassèrent une quantité double de nourriture, deux omers pour chacun. Tous les principaux de l’assemblée vinrent le rapporter à Moïse. 23 Et Moïse leur dit: C’est ce que l’Eternel a ordonné. Demain est le jour du repos, le sabbat consacré à l’Eternel; faites cuire ce que vous avez à faire cuire, faites bouillir ce que vous avez à faire bouillir, et mettez en réserve jusqu’au matin tout ce qui restera. 24 Ils le laissèrent jusqu’au matin, comme Moïse l’avait ordonné; et cela ne devint point infect, et il ne s’y mit point de vers. 25 Moïse dit: Mangez-le aujourd’hui, car c’est le jour du sabbat; aujourd’hui vous n’en trouverez point dans la campagne. 26 Pendant six jours vous en ramasserez; mais le septième jour, qui est le sabbat, il n’y en aura point.
27 Le septième jour, quelques-uns du peuple sortirent pour en ramasser, et ils n’en trouvèrent point. 28 Alors l’Eternel dit à Moïse: Jusqu’à quand refuserez-vous d’observer mes commandements et mes lois? 29 Considérez que l’Eternel vous a donné le sabbat; c’est pourquoi il vous donne au sixième jour de la nourriture pour deux jours. Que chacun reste à sa place, et que personne ne sorte du lieu où il est au septième jour.
30 Et le peuple se reposa le septième jour.
31 La maison d’Israël donna à cette nourriture le nom de manne[b]. Elle ressemblait à de la graine de coriandre[c]; elle était blanche, et avait le goût d’un gâteau au miel.
32 Moïse dit: Voici ce que l’Eternel a ordonné: Qu’un omer rempli de manne soit conservé pour vos descendants, afin qu’ils voient le pain que je vous ai fait manger dans le désert, après vous avoir fait sortir du pays d’Egypte. 33 Et Moïse dit à Aaron: Prends un vase, mets-y de la manne plein un omer, et dépose-le devant l’Eternel, afin qu’il soit conservé pour vos descendants. 34 Suivant l’ordre donné par l’Eternel à Moïse, Aaron le déposa devant le témoignage, afin qu’il soit conservé.
35 Les enfants d’Israël mangèrent la manne pendant quarante ans, jusqu’à leur arrivée dans un pays habité; ils mangèrent la manne jusqu’à leur arrivée aux frontières du pays de Canaan.
36 L’omer est la dixième partie de l’épha.

16 以色列全體會眾從以琳起行，在出埃及以後第二個月十五日，來到以琳和西奈中間汛的曠野那裡。 2 以色列全體會眾在曠野都向摩西和亞倫發怨言； 3 以色列人對他們說：“我們寧願在埃及地坐在肉鍋旁邊，吃飯吃到飽的時候，死在耶和華的手裡！你們倒把我們領出來，到這曠野，是要叫這全體會眾餓死啊！”
4 耶和華對摩西說：“看哪，我要把糧食從天上降給你們；人民可以出去，每天收取當天的分量，我好試驗他們是否遵行我的律法。 5 到第六天，他們把收進來的預備好，比每天收取的多一倍。” 6 摩西和亞倫對以色列眾人說：“今晚你們必定知道是耶和華把你們從埃及地領出來。 7 明早你們必定看見耶和華的榮耀，因為耶和華聽見了你們向他所發的怨言了。我們算甚麼，你們竟向我們發怨言呢？” 8 摩西又說：“耶和華晚上必給你們肉吃，早晨必給你們食物吃飽，因為耶和華聽見了你們埋怨他所說的怨言了。我們算甚麼？你們的怨言不是向我們發的，而是向耶和華發的。” 9 摩西對亞倫說：“你要對以色列全體會眾說：‘你們走近耶和華面前，因為他已經聽見了你們的怨言了。’” 10 亞倫對以色列全體會眾說話的時候，他們向著曠野觀望，看見耶和華的榮耀在雲中顯現出來。 11 耶和華吩咐摩西說： 12 “以色列人的怨言，我已經聽見了。你告訴他們說：‘黃昏的時候你們必吃肉，早晨的時候必有食物吃飽；這樣，你們就知道我耶和華是你們的 神了。’”

13 到了晚上，有鵪鶉飛上來，把營都遮蓋了；到了早晨，營的四周有一層露水。 14 露水上升以後，就見野地上有細小鱗狀的東西，像小白霜一樣細小的東西。 15 以色列人看見了，就彼此對問說：“這是甚麼？”原來他們不知道那是甚麼。摩西對他們說：“這就是耶和華賜給你們吃的食物。 16 耶和華吩咐的話是這樣的：‘你們要按著各人的食量收取，按著你們的人數為帳幕裡的人收取，一人兩公升。’” 17 以色列人就這樣行了；有的多收、有的少收。 18 他們用升斗衡量的時候，多收的沒有剩餘，少收的也不缺乏；各人按著自己的食量收取。 19 摩西對他們說：“誰也不可把一些留到早晨。” 20 他們卻不聽摩西的話，有人把一些留到早晨，就生蟲發臭了。摩西就向他們發怒。 21 他們每天早晨都按著各人的食量去收取；太陽一發熱，就融化了。
22 到第六日，他們收取了兩倍的食物，每人四公升；會眾的首領都來告訴摩西。 23 摩西對他們說：“耶和華這樣說：‘明天是安息日，是向耶和華守的聖安息日。你們要烤的，就烤吧；要煮的，就煮吧；所有餘剩的要自己保存著，直留到早晨。’” 24 他們就照著摩西吩咐的，把餘剩的留到早晨；竟然不發臭，裡頭也沒有生蟲。 25 摩西說：“今天吃這個吧，因為今天是向耶和華守的安息日，今日你們在田野裡必找不著。 26 六天你們可以收取，但第七天是安息日，在那一天甚麼都沒有了。” 27 第七天民間有人出去收取，可是甚麼也找不著。 28 耶和華對摩西說：“你們拒絕遵守我的誡命和律法，要到幾時呢？ 29 你們看，耶和華把安息日賜給了你們，所以第六日他賜給你們兩天的食物；第七天你們各人要住在家裡，誰都不可離開自己的地方。” 30 於是人民在第七天都安息了。

Bread from Heaven
16 And they (A)journeyed from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came to the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and (B)Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they departed from the land of Egypt. 2 Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel (C)complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. 3 And the children of Israel said to them, (D)“Oh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, (E)when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain (F)bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather [a]a certain quota every day, that I may (G)test them, whether they will (H)walk in My law or not. 5 And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and (I)it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”
6 Then Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, (J)“At evening you shall know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt. 7 And in the morning you shall see (K)the glory of the Lord; for He (L)hears your complaints against the Lord. But (M)what are we, that you complain against us?” 8 Also Moses said, “This shall be seen when the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to the full; for the Lord hears your complaints which you make against Him. And what are we? Your complaints are not against us but (N)against the Lord.”
9 Then Moses spoke to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of the children of Israel, (O)‘Come near before the Lord, for He has heard your complaints.’ ” 10 Now it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord (P)appeared in the cloud.
11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 12 (Q)“I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, (R)‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and (S)in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’ ”
13 So it was that (T)quail came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning (U)the dew lay all around the camp. 14 And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was (V)a small round (W)substance, as fine as frost on the ground. 15 So when the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.
And Moses said to them, (X)“This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: ‘Let every man gather it (Y)according to each one’s need, one (Z)omer for each person, according to the number of persons; let every man take for those who are in his tent.’ ”
17 Then the children of Israel did so and gathered, some more, some less. 18 So when they measured it by omers, (AA)he who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack. Every man had gathered according to each one’s need. 19 And Moses said, “Let no one (AB)leave any of it till morning.” 20 Notwithstanding they did not [b]heed Moses. But some of them left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. 21 So they gathered it every morning, every man according to his need. And when the sun became hot, it melted.
22 And so it was, on the sixth day, that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. 23 Then he said to them, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Tomorrow is (AC)a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.’ ” 24 So they laid it up till morning, as Moses commanded; and it did not (AD)stink, nor were there any worms in it. 25 Then Moses said, “Eat that today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. 26 (AE)Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none.”
27 Now it happened that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found none. 28 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long (AF)do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws? 29 See! For the Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore He gives you on the sixth day bread for two days. Let every man remain in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
31 And the house of Israel called its name [c]Manna. And (AG)it was like white coriander seed, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.
32 Then Moses said, “This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: ‘Fill an omer with it, to be kept for your generations, that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’ ” 33 And Moses said to Aaron, (AH)“Take a pot and put an omer of manna in it, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for your generations.” 34 As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up (AI)before the Testimony, to be kept. 35 And the children of Israel (AJ)ate manna (AK)forty years, (AL)until they came to an inhabited land; they ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. 36 Now an omer is one-tenth of an ephah.

The People Demand Food
16 The whole ·Israelite community [L congregation/assembly of the sons/T children of Israel] left Elim and came to the ·Desert [Wilderness] of Sin, which was between Elim and Sinai; they arrived there on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had left Egypt. 2 Then the whole ·Israelite community [congregation; L assembly of the sons/T children of Israel] ·grumbled [complained] to Moses and Aaron in the ·desert [wilderness]. 3 ·They [L The sons/T children of Israel] said to them, “It would have been better if the [L hand of the] Lord had killed us in the land of Egypt. There we ·had meat to eat and [L sat by the fleshpots and ate] all the ·food [bread] we wanted. But you have brought us into this ·desert [wilderness] to starve ·us [L all this assembly/crowd] to death.”
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will cause ·food [bread] to fall like rain from ·the sky [heaven] for all of you. Every day the people must go out and gather what they need for that day. I want to ·see if the people will do what I teach them [L test them to see if they will walk in my law/instruction or not]. 5 On the sixth day of each week, they are to gather twice as much as they gather on other days. Then they are to prepare it.”
6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel]: “This evening you will know that the Lord is the one who brought you out of Egypt. 7 Tomorrow morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard you ·grumble [complain] against him. ·We are nothing, so you are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord [L For what are we that you grumble/complain against us?].” 8 And Moses said, “Each evening the Lord will give you meat to eat, and every morning he will give you all the bread you want, because he has heard you ·grumble [complain] against him. You are not grumbling against ·Aaron and me, because we are nothing; you are grumbling [L us, but] against the Lord.”
9 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Speak to the whole ·community of the Israelites [L congregation/assembly of the sons/T children of Israel], and say to them, ‘·Meet together in the presence of [L Draw near] the Lord, because he has heard your ·grumblings [complaints].’”
10 While Aaron was speaking to the whole ·community of the Israelites [L congregation/assembly of the sons/T children of Israel], they ·looked [L turned] toward the ·desert [wilderness]. There the glory of the Lord appeared in a cloud.
11 The Lord said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the ·grumblings [complaints] of the ·people [sons/T children] of Israel. So tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and every morning you will eat all the bread you want. Then you will know I am the Lord your God.’”
13 That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning [L a layer of] dew lay around the camp. 14 When the [L layer of] dew ·was gone [evaporated; L went up], thin flakes like frost were on the ·desert [wilderness] ground. 15 When the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] saw it, they asked each other, “What is it?” because they did not know what it was.
So Moses told them, “This is the bread the Lord has given you to eat. 16 The Lord has commanded, ‘Each one of you must gather what he needs, about ·two quarts [L an omer] for every person in your ·family [L own tent].’”
17 So the ·people [L sons; children] of Israel did this; some people gathered much, and some gathered little. 18 Then they measured it [L by omer]. The person who gathered more did not have too much, nor did the person who gathered less have too little. Each person gathered just as much as he needed.
19 Moses said to them, “Don’t ·keep any of it to eat [L leave any of it until] the next day.” 20 But some of the people did not listen to Moses and kept part of it to eat the next morning. It became full of worms and ·began to stink [spoiled], so Moses was angry with those people.
21 Every morning each person gathered as much food as he needed, but when the sun became hot, it melted away.
22 On the sixth day the people gathered twice as much food—·four quarts [L two omers] for every person. When all the leaders of the ·community [congregation; assembly] came and told this to Moses, 23 he said to them, “This is what the Lord ·commanded [L said], because tomorrow is the Sabbath, the Lord’s holy day of rest. Bake what you want to bake, and boil what you want to boil today. Save the rest of the food until tomorrow morning.”
24 So the people saved it until the next morning, as Moses had commanded, and none of it ·began to stink [spoiled] or have worms in it. 25 Moses told the people, “Eat ·the food you gathered yesterday [L it today]. Today is a Sabbath, ·the Lord’s day of rest [L …of the Lord]; you will not find any out in the field today. 26 You should gather ·the food [L it] for six days, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day. On that day ·there will not be any food on the ground [L it will not be on it].”
27 On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather food, but they couldn’t find any. 28 Then the Lord said to Moses, “How long will you people refuse to ·obey [keep] my commands and ·teachings [instructions; laws]? 29 Look, the Lord has ·made the Sabbath a day of rest for you [L given to you the Sabbath]. So on the sixth day he will give you enough food for two days, but on the seventh day each of you must stay where you are. Do not go anywhere.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
31 The ·people [L house] of Israel called the food manna [C based on the Hebrew phrase, “What is it?”; 16:15]. It was like ·small white seeds [L coriander seeds, white] and tasted like wafers made with honey.
32 Then Moses said, “·The Lord said [L This is the word/thing the Lord has commanded], ‘·Save [Keep; L Fill] ·two quarts [L an omer] of this food ·for your descendants [L throughout your generations]. Then they can see the food I gave you to eat in the ·desert [wilderness] when I brought you out of Egypt.’”
33 Moses told Aaron, “Take a jar and fill it with ·two quarts [L an omer] of manna. Then place it before the Lord, and ·save [keep] it ·for your descendants [L throughout your generations].” 34 So Aaron did what the Lord had commanded Moses. He put ·the jar of manna [L it] in front of the ·Agreement [L Testimony; C the Ark, named for the Ten Commandments placed in it] to keep it safe. 35 The ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] ate manna for forty years, until they came to the land where they settled—the edge of the land of Canaan [Josh. 5:12]. 36 The measure they used for the manna was ·two quarts [L an omer], or one-tenth of an ephah [C an ephah is about 20 quarts].
