Le cantique de délivrance
15 Alors Moïse et les Israélites entonnèrent ce cantique[a] en l’honneur de l’Eternel :
Je veux chanter pour l’Eternel,
il a fait éclater sa gloire,
il a culbuté dans la mer ╵le cheval et son cavalier.
2 L’Eternel est ma force, ╵il est le sujet de mes chants[b],
il m’a sauvé,
il est mon Dieu, je le louerai
et je l’exalterai, ╵lui, le Dieu de mon père[c].
3 L’Eternel est un grand guerrier,
l’Eternel est son nom.
4 Les chars du pharaon ╵et toute son armée,
il les a jetés à la mer,
l’élite de ses combattants
a été engloutie ╵dans la mer des Roseaux,
5 et les flots les ont recouverts.
Ils ont coulé comme une pierre ╵dans les profondeurs de l’abîme.
6 Ton bras droit, Eternel,
a fait éclater sa puissance,
ton bras droit, Eternel,
écrase l’ennemi.
7 Dans ta gloire éclatante,
tu renverses tes adversaires,
tu déchaînes contre eux ╵le feu de ta colère
et ils sont consumés ╵comme des brins de paille.
8 Sous l’action de ton souffle[d],
les eaux se sont amoncelées,
les flots se sont dressés ╵comme un rempart,
et ils se sont figés ╵au milieu de la mer.
9 L’ennemi se disait :
Je les pourchasserai ╵et je les atteindrai,
je m’emparerai d’un butin,
je m’en rassasierai,
je tirerai l’épée,
je me saisirai d’eux.
10 Tu as soufflé,
et la mer les a recouverts !
Ils se sont enfoncés ╵comme des blocs de plomb
dans les puissantes eaux.
11 Qui, parmi tous les dieux, ╵ô Eternel, ╵qui est semblable à toi ?
Et qui est, comme toi, ╵paré de sainteté,
et redoutable, ╵et digne de louanges,
opérant des prodiges ?
12 Tu étends ton bras droit,
et la terre engloutit ╵nos poursuivants.
13 Dans ton amour, ╵tu as conduit ce peuple
que tu as libéré
et tu l’as dirigé ╵par ta grande puissance
vers ta demeure sainte[e].
14 Les peuples l’ont appris ╵et ils en ont tremblé.
La terreur a saisi
les gens de Philistie.
15 Déjà les chefs d’Edom
en sont épouvantés,
les princes de Moab
se mettent à trembler,
tous les Cananéens ╵en perdent le courage[f].
16 L’angoisse et la panique
s’abattent sur eux tous.
Ton action extraordinaire
les a tous pétrifiés,
jusqu’à ce qu’ait passé ╵ton peuple, ô Eternel !
Jusqu’à ce qu’ait passé ╵ce peuple que tu t’es acquis.
17 Tu les amèneras ╵et tu les planteras
sur la montagne ╵qui t’appartient,
au lieu que tu destines ╵à être ta demeure, ╵ô Eternel,
jusqu’à ton sanctuaire, ╵ô Eternel
que tes mains ont fondé.
18 L’Eternel régnera ╵à perpétuité !
19 En effet, les chevaux du pharaon, ses chars et ceux qui les montaient s’étaient engagés dans la mer, et l’Eternel avait fait refluer l’eau sur eux tandis que les Israélites avaient traversé la mer à pied sec.
20 Miryam, la prophétesse, sœur d’Aaron, prit le tambourin, et toutes les femmes la suivirent en dansant et en jouant des tambourins.
21 Miryam entonna, en réponse aux Israélites :
Chantez pour l’Eternel :
il a fait éclater sa gloire,
il a culbuté dans la mer
le cheval et son cavalier.
De la mer des Roseaux au mont Sinaï
A Mara : le peuple se désaltère
22 Sur ordre de Moïse, Israël quitta la mer des Roseaux et prit la direction du désert de Shour[g]. Ils marchèrent pendant trois jours dans le désert sans trouver de point d’eau. 23 Ils arrivèrent à Mara[h] où il y avait de l’eau, mais ils ne purent pas en boire parce qu’elle était amère – d’où le nom de Mara (Amertume). 24 Alors le peuple se plaignit de Moïse en disant : Qu’allons-nous boire ?
25 Moïse implora l’Eternel, qui lui indiqua un bois d’une certaine espèce qu’il jeta dans l’eau, et l’eau devint potable.
C’est à cet endroit que l’Eternel donna au peuple des préceptes et un code de droit ; là aussi il le mit à l’épreuve. 26 Il leur dit : Si vous écoutez attentivement l’Eternel votre Dieu, et si vous faites ce qui est droit à ses yeux, si vous êtes attentifs à ses commandements et si vous obéissez à toutes ses lois, je ne vous infligerai aucune des maladies dont j’ai frappé les Egyptiens ; car je suis l’Eternel qui vous apporte la guérison.
27 Ensuite, les Israélites arrivèrent à Elim[i] où il y avait douze sources d’eau et soixante-dix palmiers. Ils campèrent là près de l’eau.

15 Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the Lord, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
2 The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.
3 The Lord is a man of war: the Lord is his name.
4 Pharaoh's chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea.
5 The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone.
6 Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy.
7 And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee: thou sentest forth thy wrath, which consumed them as stubble.
8 And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.
9 The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.
10 Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters.
11 Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?
12 Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.
13 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.
14 The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina.
15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.
16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O Lord, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.
17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O Lord, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established.
18 The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.
19 For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.
20 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.
21 And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.
23 And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.
24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?
25 And he cried unto the Lord; and the Lord shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,
26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.
27 And they came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and threescore and ten palm trees: and they encamped there by the waters.

Israel’s Song
15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord. They said:
I will sing to the Lord,
for He is highly exalted;
He has thrown the horse
and its rider into the sea.
2 The Lord is my strength and my song;[a]
He has become my salvation.(A)
This is my God, and I will praise Him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt Him.(B)
3 The Lord is a warrior;(C)
Yahweh is His name.(D)
4 He threw Pharaoh’s chariots
and his army into the sea;
the elite of his officers
were drowned in the Red Sea.(E)
5 The floods covered them;
they sank to the depths like a stone.(F)
6 Lord, Your right hand is glorious in power.
Lord, Your right hand shattered the enemy.(G)
7 You overthrew Your adversaries
by Your great majesty.
You unleashed Your burning wrath;
it consumed them like stubble.(H)
8 The waters heaped up(I) at the blast of Your nostrils;
the currents stood firm like a dam.
The watery depths congealed in the heart of the sea.
9 The enemy said:
“I will pursue, I will overtake,
I will divide the spoil.(J)
My desire will be gratified at their expense.
I will draw my sword;
my hand will destroy[b] them.”
10 But You blew with Your breath,
and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead
in the mighty waters.
11 Lord, who is like You among the gods?
Who is like You, glorious in holiness,(K)
revered with praises, performing wonders?(L)
12 You stretched out Your right hand,
and the earth swallowed them.
13 You will lead the people
You have redeemed
with Your faithful love;
You will guide them to Your holy dwelling
with Your strength.(M)
14 When the peoples hear, they will shudder;
anguish will seize the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified;(N)
trembling will seize the leaders of Moab;
the inhabitants of Canaan will panic;
16 and terror(O) and dread will fall on them.
They will be as still[c] as a stone
because of Your powerful arm
until Your people pass by, Lord,
until the people whom You purchased[d] pass by.(P)
17 You will bring them in and plant them
on the mountain of Your possession;(Q)
Lord, You have prepared the place
for Your dwelling;
Lord,[e] Your hands have established the sanctuary.
18 The Lord will reign(R) forever and ever!
19 When Pharaoh’s horses with his chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them. But the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. 20 Then Miriam the prophetess,(S) Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her with their tambourines and danced.(T) 21 Miriam sang to them:
Sing to the Lord,
for He is highly exalted;
He has thrown the horse
and its rider into the sea.
Water Provided
22 Then Moses led Israel on from the Red Sea, and they went out to the Wilderness of Shur. They journeyed for three days in the wilderness without finding water. 23 They came to Marah, but they could not drink the water at Marah because it was bitter—that is why it was named Marah.[f] 24 The people grumbled to Moses, “What are we going to drink?”(U) 25 So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he threw it into the water, the water became drinkable.
He made a statute and ordinance for them at Marah and He tested them there.(V) 26 He said, “If you will carefully obey the Lord your God, do what is right in His eyes, pay attention to His commands, and keep all His statutes, I will not inflict any illnesses on you that I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am Yahweh who heals you.”(W)
27 Then they came to Elim, where there were 12 springs of water and 70 date palms, and they camped there by the waters.
