12 Herren sa till Mose och Aron i Egypten: 2 ”Från och med nu ska den här månaden vara den första månaden på året för er. 3 Säg till Israels menighet att varje familj ska skaffa ett lamm eller en killing till den tionde dagen i denna månad, ett djur för varje hushåll. 4 Om familjen är för liten för ett helt djur, ska det delas med den närmaste grannfamiljen, efter antalet personer. Beräkna hur mycket var och en äter. 5 Djuret ska vara årsgammalt, av hankön, och det ska vara felfritt, antingen ett får eller en get.
6 Ni ska sköta om det till den fjortonde dagen i månaden. I skymningen den dagen[a] ska hela Israels menighet slakta det, 7 och lite av blodet ska strykas på dörrposterna och på tvärbjälken över dörren i de hus där man äter det. 8 Köttet ska ätas just den natten. Det ska vara stekt över eld och man ska äta det med bröd som är bakat utan jäst och med bittra örter. 9 Köttet får inte ätas rått eller kokt utan det ska vara stekt över eld med både huvud, fötter och inälvor. 10 Ingenting av det får sparas till följande morgon. Om något blir kvar, ska det brännas.
11 Ni ska äta det med reskläderna på. Ni ska ha skor på fötterna och vandringsstavar i händerna. Ät snabbt! Detta är Herrens påsk[b].
12 Jag ska nämligen gå fram genom Egypten just den natten och döda allt förstfött i landet, människor likväl som djur. Jag ska hålla dom över alla Egyptens gudar, för jag är Herren. 13 Blodet ska vara tecknet på husen där ni bor, och när jag ser blodet ska jag gå förbi er, och inget fördärv ska drabba er när jag slår Egypten.
14 Ni ska ha denna som minnesdag för er och fira den som Herrens högtid från generation till generation, som en oföränderlig förordning. 15 I sju dagar ska ni äta osyrat bröd. Redan den första dagen ska ni rensa bort all jäst ur era hus. Den som äter någonting jäst under dessa sju dagar ska utrotas ur Israel. 16 På den första och den sjunde dagen ska en helig sammankomst hållas och inget arbete får utföras under de dagarna, med undantag för matlagning så att var och en får äta; det är allt ni får göra.
17 Det osyrade brödets högtid ska ni fira därför att den här dagen förde jag era härskaror ut ur Egypten. Det är alltså en oföränderlig förordning att ni ska fira denna dag, generation efter generation. 18 Från kvällen den fjortonde dagen i månaden till kvällen den tjugoförsta dagen får bara bröd som bakats utan jäst ätas. 19 Under dessa sju dagar får det inte finnas något jäst i era hem. Den som under denna tid äter någonting som är jäst ska utrotas ur Israel, såväl invandraren som israeliten. 20 Ni ska alltså inte äta någonting som är bakat med jäst, utan bara bröd som inte är jäst, var ni än bor.”
21 Då kallade Mose till sig alla de äldste i Israel och sa till dem: ”Gå nu och skaffa ett lamm åt era familjer, och slakta det som påskoffer. 22 Ta sedan några isopstjälkar och doppa dem i blodet i skålen och stryk lite av blodet på tvärbjälken till dörren och utmed de båda dörrposterna. Sedan får ingen av er gå ut genom dörren förrän det blir morgon. 23 Herren ska nämligen gå fram genom landet och slå egypterna, men när han ser blodet på dörrposterna och på tvärbjälken, ska han gå förbi den dörren och inte tillåta Förgöraren[c] att gå in i era hus och döda er.
24 Följ dessa regler som en bestående förordning för er och era ättlingar. 25 När ni kommer in i det land som Herren har lovat att ge er, ska ni fortsätta att fira på samma sätt. 26 Och när era barn frågar: ’Varför firar vi den här högtiden?’ 27 då ska ni svara: ’Det är ett påskoffer åt Herren, som gick förbi israeliternas hus när han dödade egypterna. Han skonade våra hus.’ ” Och allt folket böjde sig och tillbad Herren.
28 Israels folk gick sedan iväg och gjorde exakt det som Herren hade befallt Mose och Aron.
Alla förstfödda i Egypten dör
29 Vid midnatt dödade Herren de förstfödda i landet, från faraos förstfödde son till den förstfödde till fången som satt i fängelse och även det förstfödda bland boskapen. 30 Mitt i natten steg farao upp, likaså hans hovmän och allt folket i Egypten, och det blev ett jämmer och en gråt över hela Egypten, för det fanns inte ett hus där inte någon låg död.
31 Farao kallade till sig Mose och Aron redan under natten och sa: ”Lämna mitt folk nu! Gå härifrån allihop, både ni och de övriga israeliterna, för att tillbe Herren, som ni begärde. 32 Ta med er era flockar och hjordar, precis som ni ville. Ge er iväg, och be om välsignelse för mig också!” 33 Egypterna skyndade på dem för att få ut dem ur landet så fort som möjligt. ”Annars är vi snart döda allihop”, sa de.
34 Israeliterna tog med sig deg, som man inte hunnit blanda jäst i, och de lindade in baktrågen i sina kläder och bar dem på axlarna. 35 Israeliterna gjorde precis som Mose sagt till dem. De bad egypterna om föremål av silver och guld och även om kläder. 36 Och Herren gjorde så att egypterna blev vänligt inställda mot israeliterna, och gav dem allt de ville ha. Så fick de med sig ett byte från egypterna.
Flykten från Egypten
37 Israeliterna lämnade Ramses och gick till Suckot. Det var omkring 600 000 män som gick till fots, förutom alla kvinnor och barn. 38 Många andra följde med dem och dessutom stora boskapshjordar, får och kor. 39 De bakade bröd av degen, som de hade med sig från Egypten. Folket hade ju drivits ut ur Egypten och inte hunnit låta degen jäsa. De hade inte heller hunnit ta någon matsäck med sig.
40 Israeliterna hade bott i Egypten i 430 år, 41 och det var på den sista dagen av det 430:e året som alla Herrens härskaror lämnade Egypten. 42 Herren vakade just denna natt för att föra ut dem ur landet. Denna Herrens natt ska alla israeliterna vaka, generation efter generation.
Regler för påskfirandet
43 Herren sa till Mose och Aron: ”Detta är stadgan om påsken: Ingen utlänning får äta av lammet, 44 men varje slav som köpts ska äta det om han har blivit omskuren[d]. 45 Ingen som tillfälligt bor hos er och ingen daglönare får äta det.
46 Det ska ätas i ett och samma hus utan att föra något ut ur huset och ni ska inte krossa något av dess ben. 47 Hela Israel ska fira denna högtid.
48 Om det finns någon utlänning som bor tillsammans med er och vill fira Herrens påsk, måste alla män först omskäras. Sedan kan han komma och delta och ska då vara som en israelit. Men ingen oomskuren får äta det. 49 Lagen gäller lika både för israeliten och för invandraren som bor bland er.”
50 Alla israeliterna följde alla de befallningar Herren hade gett till Mose och Aron. 51 Den dagen ledde Herren dem ut ur Egypten i ordnade härskaror.

12 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying,
2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.
10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord's passover.
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord.
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.
16 And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.
17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.
18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.
19 Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.
20 Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.
21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.
22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.
23 For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.
24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.
25 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the Lord will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service.
26 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service?
27 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord's passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.
28 And the children of Israel went away, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.
29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the Lord smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.
30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.
31 And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the Lord, as ye have said.
32 Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also.
33 And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men.
34 And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.
35 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:
36 And the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.
37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.
38 And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.
39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.
40 Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.
41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.
42 It is a night to be much observed unto the Lord for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the Lord to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.
43 And the Lord said unto Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the passover: There shall no stranger eat thereof:
44 But every man's servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof.
45 A foreigner and an hired servant shall not eat thereof.
46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.
47 All the congregation of Israel shall keep it.
48 And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof.
49 One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you.
50 Thus did all the children of Israel; as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.
51 And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the Lord did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.

12 Now the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, 2 (B)“This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you. 3 Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: ‘On the (C)tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household. 4 And if the household is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the persons; according to each man’s need you shall make your count for the lamb. 5 Your lamb shall be (D)without[a] blemish, a male [b]of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 Now you shall keep it until the (E)fourteenth day of the same month. And none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning. 23 (AD)For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the (AE)blood on the [g]lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and (AF)not allow (AG)the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you. 24 And you shall (AH)observe this thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever. 25 It will come to pass when you come to the land which the Lord will give you, (AI)just as He promised, that you shall keep this service. 26 (AJ)And it shall be, when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ 27 that you shall say, (AK)‘It is the Passover sacrifice of the Lord, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and delivered our households.’ ” So the people (AL)bowed their heads and worshiped. 28 Then the children of Israel went away and (AM)did so; just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.
The Tenth Plague: Death of the Firstborn(AN)
29 (AO)And it came to pass at midnight that (AP)the Lord struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was [h]in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of (AQ)livestock. 30 So Pharaoh rose in the night, he, all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead.
The Exodus
31 Then he (AR)called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, “Rise, go out from among my people, (AS)both you and the children of Israel. And go, serve the Lord as you have (AT)said. 32 (AU)Also take your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone; and bless me also.”
33 (AV)And the Egyptians (AW)urged the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste. For they said, “We shall all be dead.” 34 So the people took their dough before it was leavened, having their kneading bowls bound up in their clothes on their shoulders. 35 Now the children of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, and they had asked from the Egyptians (AX)articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing. 36 (AY)And the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they granted them what they requested. Thus (AZ)they plundered the Egyptians.
37 Then (BA)the children of Israel journeyed from (BB)Rameses to Succoth, about (BC)six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children. 38 A (BD)mixed multitude went up with them also, and flocks and herds—a great deal of (BE)livestock. 39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they had brought out of Egypt; for it was not leavened, because (BF)they were driven out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared provisions for themselves.
40 Now the [i]sojourn of the children of Israel who lived in [j]Egypt was (BG)four hundred and thirty years. 41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years—on that very same day—it came to pass that (BH)all the armies of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt. 42 It is (BI)a [k]night of solemn observance to the Lord for bringing them out of the land of Egypt. This is that night of the Lord, a solemn observance for all the children of Israel throughout their generations.
Passover Regulations(BJ)
43 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is (BK)the ordinance of the Passover: No foreigner shall eat it. 44 But every man’s servant who is bought for money, when you have (BL)circumcised him, then he may eat it. 45 (BM)A sojourner and a hired servant shall not eat it. 46 In one house it shall be eaten; you shall not carry any of the flesh outside the house, (BN)nor shall you break one of its bones. 47 (BO)All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. 48 And (BP)when a stranger [l]dwells with you and wants to keep the Passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as a native of the land. For no uncircumcised person shall eat it. 49 (BQ)One law shall be for the native-born and for the stranger who dwells among you.”
50 Thus all the children of Israel did; as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. 51 (BR)And it came to pass, on that very same day, that the Lord brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt (BS)according to their armies.
