1 Voici les noms des fils d’Israël, venus en Egypte avec Jacob et la famille de chacun d’eux: 2 Ruben, Siméon, Lévi, Juda, 3 Issacar, Zabulon, Benjamin, 4 Dan, Nephthali, Gad et Aser. 5 Les personnes issues de Jacob étaient au nombre de soixante-dix en tout. Joseph était alors en Egypte. 6 Joseph mourut, ainsi que tous ses frères et toute cette génération-là. 7 Les enfants d’Israël furent féconds et multiplièrent, ils s’accrurent et devinrent de plus en plus puissants. Et le pays en fut rempli.
8 Il s’éleva sur l’Egypte un nouveau roi, qui n’avait point connu Joseph. 9 Il dit à son peuple: Voilà les enfants d’Israël qui forment un peuple plus nombreux et plus puissant que nous. 10 Allons! montrons-nous habiles à son égard; empêchons qu’il ne s’accroisse, et que, s’il survient une guerre, il ne se joigne à nos ennemis, pour nous combattre et sortir ensuite du pays. 11 Et l’on établit sur lui des chefs de corvées, afin de l’accabler de travaux pénibles. C’est ainsi qu’il bâtit les villes de Pithom et de Ramsès, pour servir de magasins à Pharaon. 12 Mais plus on l’accablait, plus il multipliait et s’accroissait; et l’on prit en aversion les enfants d’Israël. 13 Alors les Egyptiens réduisirent les enfants d’Israël à une dure servitude. 14 Ils leur rendirent la vie amère par de rudes travaux en argile et en briques, et par tous les ouvrages des champs; et c’était avec cruauté qu’ils leur imposaient toutes ces charges.
15 Le roi d’Egypte parla aussi aux sages-femmes des Hébreux, nommées l’une Schiphra, et l’autre Pua. 16 Il leur dit: Quand vous accoucherez les femmes des Hébreux et que vous les verrez sur les sièges, si c’est un garçon, faites-le mourir; si c’est une fille, laissez-la vivre. 17 Mais les sages-femmes craignirent Dieu, et ne firent point ce que leur avait dit le roi d’Egypte; elles laissèrent vivre les enfants. 18 Le roi d’Egypte appela les sages-femmes, et leur dit: Pourquoi avez-vous agi ainsi, et avez-vous laissé vivre les enfants? 19 Les sages-femmes répondirent à Pharaon: C’est que les femmes des Hébreux ne sont pas comme les Egyptiennes; elles sont vigoureuses et elles accouchent avant l’arrivée de la sage-femme. 20 Dieu fit du bien aux sages-femmes; et le peuple multiplia et devint très nombreux. 21 Parce que les sages-femmes avaient eu la crainte de Dieu, Dieu fit prospérer leurs maisons.
22 Alors Pharaon donna cet ordre à tout son peuple: Vous jetterez dans le fleuve tout garçon qui naîtra, et vous laisserez vivre toutes les filles.

Iosif se afla deja în Egipt. 6 După o vreme, Iosif a murit; apoi au murit toţi fraţii săi şi toată generaţia de atunci. 7 Israeliţii s-au înmulţit foarte mult; ei au devenit numeroşi şi au ajuns puternici, astfel încât ţara s-a umplut de ei.
8 Peste Egipt s-a ridicat un nou monarh, care nu-l cunoscuse pe Iosif. 9 El a zis poporului său: „Iată că poporul israeliţilor este prea mare şi prea puternic pentru noi. 10 Haideţi să ne purtăm cu dibăcie faţă de ei, căci altfel se vor înmulţi şi, dacă se va întâmpla să fim în război, s-ar putea să li se alăture duşmanilor noştri, să lupte împotriva noastră şi să fugă din ţară.“ 11 Astfel, au pus peste ei supraveghetori de sclavi, ca să-i asuprească prin poveri grele; în acest fel au zidit Pitomul şi Ramsesul ca cetăţi cu hambare pentru Faraon[b]. 12 Însă cu cât erau ei mai asupriţi, cu atât se înmulţeau şi se răspândeau mai mult; egiptenii au ajuns să se teamă de israeliţi 13 şi i-au supus la o muncă foarte grea; 14 le-au făcut vieţile amare, punându-i să muncească din greu la facerea mortarului, a cărămizilor şi la tot felul de lucrări pe câmp. În toate sarcinile pe care le dădeau israeliţilor, egiptenii erau foarte aspri.
15 Monarhul Egiptului le-a zis moaşelor evreilor (pe una o chema Şifra, iar pe cealaltă Pua): 16 „Când vă veţi împlini slujba de moaşe la femeile evreilor şi le veţi vedea pe scaunul de naştere, dacă cel care se va naşte va fi băiat, omorâţi-l, dar dacă va fi fată, lăsaţi-o să trăiască.“ 17 Însă moaşele s-au temut de Dumnezeu şi n-au făcut cum le-a poruncit monarhul Egiptului, ci au lăsat şi băieţii să trăiască. 18 Monarhul Egiptului le-a chemat pe moaşe şi le-a întrebat:
– De ce aţi făcut acest lucru şi i-aţi lăsat şi pe băieţi să trăiască?
19 Moaşele i-au răspuns lui Faraon:
– Deoarece femeile evreilor nu sunt ca şi femeile egiptene; ele sunt vânjoase şi nasc înainte ca moaşa să ajungă la ele.
20 Dumnezeu le-a făcut bine moaşelor, iar poporul s-a înmulţit şi a ajuns foarte puternic. 21 Pentru că moaşele s-au temut de Dumnezeu, El le-a întemeiat familii. 22 Apoi Faraon a poruncit întregului său popor: „Aruncaţi în Nil orice băiat care li se va naşte[c] evreilor! Doar pe fete să le lăsaţi să trăiască!“

The Israelites Oppressed
1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt. Each man and his household went with Jacob: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 The total number of Jacob’s descendants was seventy people. (Joseph was already in Egypt.)
6 Then Joseph died, as did all his brothers and that entire generation. 7 However, the Israelites were fruitful, multiplied quickly, increased in number, and became very numerous. So the land was filled with them.
8 Then a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 He said to his people, “Look, the Israelites are more numerous and more powerful than we are. 10 Let’s come up with a wise plan to prevent them from increasing in number. Otherwise, if war breaks out, they would join with our enemies and fight against us. Then they would leave the land.” 11 So the Egyptians placed taskmasters over them to oppress them with forced labor. The Israelites built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more the Egyptians oppressed the Israelites, the more they increased in number, and the more they spread out. The Egyptians were filled with dread because of them. 13 So the Egyptians oppressed the Israelites by forcing them to work very hard. 14 The Egyptians made the Israelites’ lives bitter with hard work, with brick and mortar, and with all kinds of work in the fields. The Egyptians were merciless in the way they imposed work on the Israelites.
15 The king of Egypt also spoke to the Hebrew midwives. One of them was named Shiphrah and the other Puah. 16 He said, “When you help the Hebrew women give birth, while they are still on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a son, you are to kill him, but if you see that it is a daughter, let her live.” 17 The midwives, however, feared God, so they did not do what the king of Egypt told them to do, but they let the boys live.
18 The king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why did you do this and let the boys live?”
19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. They are vigorous, so they give birth before the midwife comes to them.”
20 So God treated the midwives well. The people also increased in number and became very numerous. 21 Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. 22 Pharaoh, however, commanded all his people, “Every son who is born you shall throw into the Nile, but every daughter you shall let live.”

The Israelites Oppressed

6 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died,(D) 7 but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers(E) and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.
8 Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.(F) 9 “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become far too numerous(G) for us.(H) 10 Come, we must deal shrewdly(I) with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country.”(J)
11 So they put slave masters(K) over them to oppress them with forced labor,(L) and they built Pithom and Rameses(M) as store cities(N) for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites 13 and worked them ruthlessly.(O) 14 They made their lives bitter with harsh labor(P) in brick(Q) and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.(R)
15 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives,(S) whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, 16 “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.”(T) 17 The midwives, however, feared(U) God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do;(V) they let the boys live. 18 Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”
19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.”(W)
20 So God was kind to the midwives(X) and the people increased and became even more numerous. 21 And because the midwives feared(Y) God, he gave them families(Z) of their own.
22 Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile,(AA) but let every girl live.”(AB)
