Het water bij Massa en Meriba
17 Het volk Israël vertrok daarna uit de Sin-woestijn. Ze trokken van de ene plaats naar de andere. Ze gingen daar waar de Heer hen beval te gaan. Toen zetten ze hun tentenkamp op bij Rafidim. Maar daar was geen water. 2 Het volk begon met Mozes ruzie te maken en zei: "Geef ons water! We willen drinken!" Maar Mozes antwoordde: "Waarom maken jullie ruzie met me? Waarom dagen jullie de Heer uit?" 3 Maar het volk had dorst en klaagde tegen Mozes: "Waarom heb je ons uit Egypte meegenomen? Om ons, onze kinderen en ons vee te laten sterven van de dorst?"
4 Toen riep Mozes luid tot de Heer en zei: "Wat moet ik met dit volk doen? Nog even en dan gooien ze me met stenen dood!" 5 Toen zei de Heer tegen Mozes: "Ga voor het volk uit en neem een paar van hun leiders mee. Neem ook de staf mee waarmee je op het water van de rivier hebt geslagen. 6 Ik zal daar vóór je op een rots bij de berg Horeb (= Sinaï) staan. Sla met je staf op die rots. Dan zal er water uit komen en kan het volk drinken." Mozes deed dat terwijl de leiders van Israël toekeken. 7 En Mozes noemde die plaats Massa (= 'uitdaging') en Meriba (= 'ruzie'), omdat de Israëlieten daar ruzie met hem hadden gemaakt en omdat ze de Heer hadden uitgedaagd. Want ze hadden gezegd: 'We willen weten of de Heer nog bij ons is of niet!'

17 Volgens de opdracht van de Here verliet het volk Israël de woestijn Sin en trok langs diverse pleisterplaatsen naar Refidim, waar zij hun kamp opsloegen. Daar was echter geen water te vinden! 2 Opnieuw mopperde het volk en eiste van Mozes: ‘Geef ons water, zodat we kunnen drinken!’ ‘Waarom moppert u op mij?’ vroeg Mozes. ‘Wilt u soms de Here op de proef stellen om te zien hoe lang Hij geduld met u heeft?’ 3 Maar gekweld door de dorst, riepen zij: ‘Waarom hebt u ons uit Egypte gehaald? Waarom moeten wij, onze kinderen en ons vee hier sterven?’ 4 Toen bad Mozes tot de Here en smeekte Hem: ‘Wat moet ik doen? Nog even en zij stenigen mij!’
5 De Here antwoordde: ‘Roep de leiders van Israël bij u en breng het volk naar het Horeb-gebergte. 6 Daar zal Ik u ontmoeten. Sla daar met uw staf op een rots—dezelfde staf waarmee u op het water van de Nijl hebt geslagen—en er zal water tevoorschijn komen, zodat zij kunnen drinken!’ Mozes deed wat de Here had gezegd en het water golfde tevoorschijn!
7 Mozes noemde die plaats Massa (Verzoeking) en Meriba (Ruzie), omdat de Israëlieten tegen de Here waren opgestaan en Hem hadden uitgedaagd met de woorden: ‘Is de Here bij ons of niet?’

17 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the Lord, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.
2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the Lord?
3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.
5 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.
6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not?

17 Then (B)all the congregation of the children of Israel set out on their journey from the Wilderness of (C)Sin, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to (D)drink. 2 (E)Therefore the people contended with Moses, and said, “Give us water, that we may drink.”
So Moses said to them, “Why do you contend with me? Why do you (F)tempt the Lord?”
3 And the people thirsted there for water, and the people (G)complained against Moses, and said, “Why is it you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our (H)livestock with thirst?”
4 So Moses (I)cried out to the Lord, saying, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to (J)stone[a] me!”
5 And the Lord said to Moses, (K)“Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which (L)you struck the river, and go. 6 (M)Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.”
And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 So he called the name of the place (N)Massah[b] and [c]Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they [d]tempted the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
