²¹ And ^(A)the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.

^33 (A)Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live?

²⁴ And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and ^(A)greatness, and ^(B)we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man ^(C)still live. ²⁵ Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. ^(D)If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die. ^26 (E)For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived?

¹⁶ just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb ^(A)on the day of the assembly, when you said, ^(B)‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’
