2 法老說：「耶和華是誰，要我聽他的話，讓以色列人去？我不認識耶和華，也不放以色列人走！」 3 他們說：「希伯來人的 神已向我們顯現了。求你讓我們往曠野去，走三天的路程，向耶和華我們的 神獻祭，免得他用瘟疫、刀劍攻擊我們。」 4 埃及王對他們說：「摩西、亞倫！你們為甚麼叫百姓不做工呢？去，服你們的勞役吧！」 5 他又說：「看哪，這地的以色列人如今這麼多，你們竟然叫他們歇下勞役！」
6 當天，法老吩咐監工和工頭說： 7 「你們不可照以前一樣提供草給百姓做磚，要叫他們自己去撿草。 8 他們平時做磚的數目，你們仍舊向他們要，一點不可減少，因為他們是懶惰的，所以才呼求說：『讓我們去向我們的 神獻祭。』 9 你們要把更重的工作加在這些人身上，使他們在其中勞碌，不去理會謊言。」

2 Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord,(A) that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”(B)
3 Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey(C) into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues(D) or with the sword.”
4 But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor?(E) Get back to your work!” 5 Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous,(F) and you are stopping them from working.”
6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers(G) and overseers in charge of the people: 7 “You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks;(H) let them go and gather their own straw. 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota.(I) They are lazy;(J) that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’(K) 9 Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”
