³³ And Eleazar son of Aaron^(A) died and was buried at Gibeah,^(B) which had been allotted to his son Phinehas^(C) in the hill country^(D) of Ephraim.

⁷ When Phinehas^(A) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear^(B) in his hand ⁸ and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;^{(C) 9} but those who died in the plague^(D) numbered 24,000.^(E)

¹⁰ The Lord said to Moses, ¹¹ “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.^(F) Since he was as zealous for my honor^(G) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. ¹² Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace^(H) with him. ¹³ He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,^(I) because he was zealous^(J) for the honor^(K) of his God and made atonement^(L) for the Israelites.”^(M)

²⁸ with Phinehas son of Eleazar,^(A) the son of Aaron, ministering before it.)^(B) They asked, “Shall we go up again to fight against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites, or not?”

The Lord responded, “Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands.^(C)”

³¹ And Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, said to Reuben, Gad and Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is with us,^(A) because you have not been unfaithful to the Lord in this matter. Now you have rescued the Israelites from the Lord’s hand.”

³² Then Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, and the leaders returned to Canaan from their meeting with the Reubenites and Gadites in Gilead and reported to the Israelites.^(B)

¹³ So the Israelites sent Phinehas^(A) son of Eleazar,^(B) the priest, to the land of Gilead—to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

⁶ Moses sent them into battle,^(A) a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas^(B) son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary^(C) and the trumpets^(D) for signaling.
