²⁰ Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.^(A) Redeem all your firstborn sons.^(B)

“No one is to appear before me empty-handed.^(C)

¹⁶ Three times a year all your men must appear^(A) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose: at the Festival of Unleavened Bread,^(B) the Festival of Weeks and the Festival of Tabernacles.^(C) No one should appear before the Lord empty-handed:^(D)

¹⁵ “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread;^(A) for seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv,^(B) for in that month you came out of Egypt.

¹³ Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey,^(A) but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.^(B) Redeem^(C) every firstborn among your sons.^(D)

¹⁵ The first offspring of every womb, both human and animal, that is offered to the Lord is yours.^(A) But you must redeem^(B) every firstborn^(C) son and every firstborn male of unclean animals.^(D)

¹⁵ When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.’^(A)

⁷ Saul said to his servant, “If we go, what can we give the man? The food in our sacks is gone. We have no gift^(A) to take to the man of God. What do we have?”

⁸ The servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have a quarter of a shekel^[a] of silver. I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us what way to take.”

²⁴ But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”^(A)

So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels^[a](B) of silver for them.

⁴⁵ “Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites are to be mine.^(A) I am the Lord.^{(B) 46} To redeem^(C) the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites, ⁴⁷ collect five shekels^[a](D) for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel,^(E) which weighs twenty gerahs.^{(F) 48} Give the money for the redemption^(G) of the additional Israelites to Aaron and his sons.”^(H)

⁴⁹ So Moses collected the redemption money^(I) from those who exceeded the number redeemed by the Levites. ⁵⁰ From the firstborn of the Israelites^(J) he collected silver weighing 1,365 shekels,^[b](K) according to the sanctuary shekel. ⁵¹ Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, as he was commanded by the word of the Lord.
