⁴ And when the people heard this bad news, ^(A)they mourned, ^(B)and no one put on his ornaments.

A Futile Invasion Attempt^(A)

³⁹ Then Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, ^(B)and the people mourned greatly.

¹⁶ Then all the ^(A)princes of the sea will ^(B)come down from their thrones, lay aside their robes, and take off their embroidered garments; they will clothe themselves with trembling; ^(C)they will sit on the ground, ^(D)tremble every moment, and ^(E)be astonished at you.

²³ Your turbans shall be on your heads and your sandals on your feet; ^(A)you shall neither mourn nor weep, but ^(B)you shall pine away in your iniquities and mourn with one another.

¹⁷ Sigh in silence, ^(A)make no mourning for the dead; ^(B)bind your turban on your head, and ^(C)put your sandals on your feet; ^(D)do not cover your ^[a]lips, and do not eat man’s bread of sorrow.”

Israel Refuses to Enter Canaan

14 So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people ^(A)wept that night.

⁵ “Say to all the people of the land, and to the priests: ‘When you ^(A)fasted and mourned in the fifth ^(B)and seventh months ^(C)during those seventy years, did you really fast ^(D)for Me—for Me?

³ and to ^(A)ask the priests who were in the house of the Lord of hosts, and the prophets, saying, “Should I weep in ^(B)the fifth month and ^[a]fast as I have done for so many years?”

⁶ Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth ^(A)and sat in ashes.
