¹¹ Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then he would return to the camp, but his young assistant, Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the tent.^(A)

“Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”^(A)

¹⁰ Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.^(A)

⁹ When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord^[a] would speak with Moses.^(A)

⁴ The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the fire.^(A)

¹³ So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up onto the mountain of God.

³⁰ So Jacob called the place Peniel,^[a] saying, “For I have seen God face to face, yet my life is preserved.”^(A)

¹⁴ You are my friends if you do what I command you.^{(A) 15} I do not call you servants^[a] any longer, because the servant^[b] does not know what the master is doing, but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.

²³ Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,”^[a] and he was called the friend of God.^(A)

¹¹ After saying this, he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him.”
