⁶ And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And ^(A)the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up ^(B)to play.

^7 (A)Do not be idolaters ^(B)as some of them were; as it is written, ^(C)“The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”

^2 (A)These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.

⁴¹ And ^(A)they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and ^(B)were rejoicing in ^(C)the works of their hands. ⁴² But ^(D)God turned away and ^(E)gave them over to worship ^(F)the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:

¹⁰ and ^(A)those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and ^(B)exchange presents, because these two prophets ^(C)had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth.

The Death of Samson

²³ Now the lords of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to ^(A)Dagon their god and to rejoice, and they said, “Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hand.” ²⁴ And when the people saw him, ^(B)they praised their god. For they said, “Our god has given our enemy into our hand, the ravager of our country, who has killed many of us.”^{[a] 25} And ^(C)when their hearts were merry, they said, “Call Samson, that he may entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and he entertained them. They made him stand between the pillars.

¹⁷ When ^(A)Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.” ¹⁸ But he said, “It is not the sound of ^(B)shouting for victory, or the sound of the cry of defeat, but the sound of singing that I hear.” ¹⁹ And as soon as he came near the camp and ^(C)saw the calf and the dancing, Moses' anger burned hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain.
