^29 (A)Then Moses said, ^[a]“Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, that He may bestow on you a blessing this day, for every man has opposed his son and his brother.”

^11 (A)“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in ^(B)My zeal. ¹² Therefore say, ^(C)‘Behold, I give to him My ^(D)covenant of peace; ¹³ and it shall be to him and ^(E)his descendants after him a covenant of ^(F)an everlasting priesthood, because he was ^(G)zealous for his God, and ^(H)made ^[a]atonement for the children of Israel.’ ”

^37 (A)He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

³ It shall come to pass that if anyone still prophesies, then his father and mother who begot him will say to him, ‘You shall ^(A)not live, because you have spoken lies in the name of the Lord.’ And his father and mother who begot him ^(B)shall thrust him through when he prophesies.

A Call to Repentance

¹⁸ Now the Lord sent you on a mission, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are ^[a]consumed.’ ¹⁹ Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you swoop down on the ^[b]spoil, and do evil in the sight of the Lord?”

²⁰ And Saul said to Samuel, ^(A)“But I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. ^21 (B)But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”

²² So Samuel said:

^6 (A)“If your brother, the son of your mother, your son or your daughter, ^(B)the wife ^[a]of your bosom, or your friend ^(C)who is as your own soul, secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which you have not known, neither you nor your fathers, ⁷ of the gods of the people which are all around you, near to you or far off from you, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth, ⁸ you shall ^(D)not ^[b]consent to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him or conceal him; ⁹ but you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to ^(E)death, and afterward the hand of all the people. ¹⁰ And you shall stone him with stones until he dies, because he sought to entice you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. ¹¹ So all Israel shall hear and ^(F)fear, and not again do such wickedness as this among you.
