The Gold Calf^(A)

32 Now when the people saw that Moses ^(B)delayed coming down from the mountain, the people ^(C)gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, ^(D)“Come, make us ^[a]gods that shall ^(E)go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who ^(F)brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”

⁴ and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of ^(A)creation.”

^9 (A)When I went up into the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord made with you, then I stayed on the mountain forty days and ^(B)forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water.

^40 (A)saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’

⁴⁸ But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master ^(A)is delaying ^[a]his coming,’

¹⁸ So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And ^(A)Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

¹¹ And it came to pass, at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.

¹² “Then the Lord said to me, ^(A)‘Arise, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly; they have ^(B)quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made themselves a molded image.’

¹⁴ And He said, ^(A)“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you ^(B)rest.”
