¹⁴ “‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death;^(A) those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people.

² For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a day of sabbath^(A) rest to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it is to be put to death.^{(B) 3} Do not light a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.^(C)”

The Sabbath-Breaker Put to Death

³² While the Israelites were in the wilderness,^(A) a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day.^{(B) 33} Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, ³⁴ and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him.^{(C) 35} Then the Lord said to Moses, “The man must die.^(D) The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp.^(E)” ³⁶ So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him^(F) to death,^(G) as the Lord commanded Moses.^(H)

²⁴ “‘In any dispute, the priests are to serve as judges^(A) and decide it according to my ordinances. They are to keep my laws and my decrees for all my appointed festivals,^(B) and they are to keep my Sabbaths holy.^(C)

²⁴ because they had not obeyed my laws but had rejected my decrees^(A) and desecrated my Sabbaths,^(B) and their eyes lusted after^(C) their parents’ idols.^(D)

²¹ “‘But the children rebelled against me: They did not follow my decrees, they were not careful to keep my laws,^(A) of which I said, “The person who obeys them will live by them,” and they desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger^(B) against them in the wilderness.^(C)

¹⁶ because they rejected my laws^(A) and did not follow my decrees and desecrated my Sabbaths. For their hearts^(B) were devoted to their idols.^(C)

¹² Also I gave them my Sabbaths^(A) as a sign^(B) between us,^(C) so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.^(D)

¹³ “‘Yet the people of Israel rebelled^(E) against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws^(F)—by which the person who obeys them will live—and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths.^(G) So I said I would pour out my wrath^(H) on them and destroy^(I) them in the wilderness.^(J)
