²⁰ When they go into the tent of meeting or when they come near the altar to minister to make an offering by fire^[a] to the Lord, they shall wash with water, so that they may not die.

²⁸ Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe, ²⁹ for indeed our God is a consuming fire.^(A)

⁵ Now when Ananias heard these words, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard of it.

¹⁰ The anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; he struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark, and he died there before God.^(A)

The Ark at Kiriath-jearim

¹⁹ The descendants of Jeconiah did not rejoice with the people of Beth-shemesh when they greeted^[a] the ark of the Lord, and he killed seventy men of them.^[b] The people mourned because the Lord had made a great slaughter among the people.^(A)

The Day of Atonement

16 The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the Lord and died.^{(A) 2} The Lord said to Moses:

“Tell your brother Aaron not to come just at any time into the sanctuary inside the curtain before the cover that is upon the ark, or he will die, for I appear in the cloud upon the cover.^(B)

Nadab and Abihu

10 Now Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu each took his censer, put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and they offered unholy fire before the Lord, such as he had not commanded them.^{(A) 2} And fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.^{(B) 3} Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord meant when he said,

And Aaron was silent.^(C)

¹⁵ Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread; on the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses, for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day shall be cut off from Israel.^(A)

¹⁰ Immediately she fell down at his feet and died. When the young men came in they found her dead, so they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
