17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.(E) 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates,(F) 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

23 After a long time the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned under their slavery and cried out. Their cry for help rose up to God from their slavery.(A) 24 God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.(B) 25 God looked upon the Israelites, and God took notice of them.(C)
