⁶ then his master shall bring him to the ^(A)judges. He shall also bring him to the door, or to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him forever.

¹⁷ then you shall take an awl and thrust it through his ear to the door, and he shall be your servant forever. Also to your female servant you shall do likewise.

⁴⁰ As a hired servant and a sojourner he shall be with you, and shall serve you until the Year of Jubilee.

² So David said to Achish, “Surely you know what your servant can do.”

And Achish said to David, “Therefore I will make you one of my chief guardians forever.”

¹⁷ then both men in the controversy shall stand before the Lord, ^(A)before the priests and the judges who serve in those days. ¹⁸ And the judges shall make careful inquiry, and indeed, if the witness is a false witness, who has testified falsely against his brother,

⁷ And they spoke to him, saying, ^(A)“If you will be a servant to these people today, and serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”

¹² So Achish believed David, saying, “He has made his people Israel utterly abhor him; therefore he will be my servant forever.”

Israel Demands a King

8 Now it came to pass when Samuel was ^(A)old that he ^(B)made his ^(C)sons judges over Israel. ² The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba.

²² But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will ^(A)take him, that he may appear before the Lord and ^(B)remain there ^(C)forever.”
